I am sure all the Hall of Fame players Mr Penick taught would agree with your vast knowledge of the game. Mr Penick was a teacher of the mind more so than the moves. Ask Tiger and Duvall, how important the mental game is.
Shyeaah. Doesn't know anything at all about the swing. Only guys like Sean Foley know anything.
Jack Nicklaus let his left heel rise on full swings with the driver and (usually) longer irons. You may have heard of him. So did Sam Snead. Greatest record in the majors, greatest tournament winner overall. Other than that, you're dead right.
@rigst Good info. The X sq in the video allows the golfer to find perfect impact. Perfect positions can be setup each time it is used. You can groove perfect for the course especially with driver. Using this with a Trackman would be the ultimate.
Aprreciate the comments. Mr Penick major teaching was to simplfy the game into terms every golfer could understand. How you get the ball to and in the hole can be accomplished in many different ways. What ever works for you is the best way but, the basics fundamentals - grip, aim, etc are the golden rules of golf,
@gpJoJoMiMi If grip, aim ,etc are the "golden rules" why does every professional have a different grip, posture, setup alignment etc? Fred Couples sure doesn't use the same fundamentals as Bubba or Tiger. Furyk sure can't be mistaken for Ernie Els even by a blind man. The only "basic fundamental that counts is IMPACT alignments.Proper impact is the only "fundamental" the above players have in common.Impact is when physics determines how good you really are :)

Lanny is not right when he says the clubhead is the most important part at inpact to be square that is rubbish. If the clubface is on line it still wont go in the right place if the swing line is wrong we all know that. Aim at the place you want to start the ball and bring it back is the way like Nichlaus did.
@arianbatty untrue. clubface alignment accounts for 83% of the shot, swingline accounts for 17%. if your club face is square at impact the ball MUST end up straight.
Think you got me wrong , but if your clubface is square at impact to a swingline it will go straight. What i was saying is if you want to move the ball take aim at the place you want to move it from to the flag ie Nicklaus 10 yards left and move it back . Anyone that just aims to hit the ball straight will hit the ball all over the park .
@rigbst 85% face 15% face to path relationship for the driver, 75/25 for irons. the face is everything. actually, you can go further into the worm hole and talk about the d-plane and getting things zeroed out. it's amazing how much trackman has helped golfers like me figure out what to fix when things go wrong. now if only the teaching pros would just admit some of the stuff (ball flight "laws") they'd taught for years was just wrong...
I think this is the best demo I have seen. I like the free wheel type of move, it made me a better ball striker, left heel returns to the ground and elbow to your side. I was getting stuck trying to get into positions all the time from other instruction, just swing it with those two things in mind, left heel and elbow, cool.
@pbrownist That is very true for me. It is a rythm thing however it is was is easy to maintain and install. I am going to start my 60 reps for 21 days TODAY. Thanks for reminding me.
So true, "waste of bandwidth." What a genius comment. Only everybody from Hogan to Nelson approved, and it's only observable in the swings of the greatest player in the history of the majors and the greatest tournament winner of all American golfers (Nicklaus and Snead), among others. Just go knock around a Sean Foley vid, or something.
I'm going on about the fact that even in a video with marginal production values and clunky scripting, when you get a chance to listen to something that one of the greatest teachers in the history of the game considers to be a really good drill for training a tour-level player, it's not a "waste of bandwidth." I'll grant you the fact that it comes off a lot better in Penick's own book(s) than it does here.
Also, as to the "magic move," what Penick really is talking about is the tendency of great players NOT to dominate the swing with their shoulders, to let the shoulders shove the arms and club around, etc. The magic-move drill he describes in his first book (better than is described here) is a way of restraining the rotation of the shoulders at the beginning of the downswing until the lower body has initiated and the arms have had time to start down on plane...
...which is to say, it's brilliant, although couched almost as a throwaway in this video. The containment of the shoulders on the downswing--allowing them to respond to the swinging motion rather than shoving the arms and club out of plane--is possibly the most critical move in the swing for a good player, especially a strong and athletic one. Watch Hogan in slow-mo, for instance, and you can see his shoulders are pointing to the right for almost the entire downswing.
Get Harvey's Book! One day on the range, tired of the pulls and slices, the next day almost all hits pure and straight. Driver 260 with much improved accuracy! No fat wedge shots, almost all irons off the turn crisp and clean! Buy his book. The #1 tip is on this video: left foot down, drop elbow to your side. Even if you don't lift your heel, shift onto it and drop your right elbow calmly to your side and "Voila!!!!" A total Eureka moment. God Bless You, Harvey Penick!
@ocdave99 Harvey was correct that is the magic move, but it still requires some timing.Try and keep your weight loaded on the left side during the backswing, then unload pressure to the left not motion and turn, pulling the flying wedge down to a small y position. That was Hogans Secret.
Tinsley clearly learned a lot from his dad. He sounds a lot like Huell Howser though, it's quite amusing when you compare the two. They could be twins.
I played at Riverside Golf course here in Austin and you can see his old house by one of the par threes.
