I' ve seen trains in southern AB that are 4 units up front and then half way through the train theres a unit and at the end of the train theres 2 or 3 more units depending on how long the train is....... sucks waiting for those ones to clear your limits cuz they are long ones!! : )

Model Railroader Magazine says that no more than 36 powered axles (equivalent to six SD's) are permitted at the head of a train. But sometimes I've seen six powered SD's towing a few non-operating units at the head of a train.
Well not usually, the guy I railfan with and myself have radios and they are on it all the time so we usually have a good general idea when they are coming. Most trains you see that have a lot of engines are shut down and in tow.
It would be nice if Norfolk Southern would do some heritage units like the Union Pacific did. Would be nice to see some good ole southern green & southern black and gold comming down the line.
