  • I want this video on my WX161 unit.

  • This video went viral on Libya

  • Esiste una musica più completa? Melodica, innovativa, barocca, rock, medievale, jazz, tecno, ........ Credo che alcuni brani del gruppo rappresentino la massima espressione della speculazione musicale. Filosofia della musica.

La sento da oltre trentanni e suscita sempre nuove emozioni. Qualcuno concorda o sono da analisi.

  • There is an energy so complex but yet simple in the music so spontanious yet so premeditated!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=02O-SaNNU0A

Gentle Giant's "A Reunion" on Chapman Stick

  • It's amazing how much better they are live. The only thing better than Gentle Giant is Gentle Giant live.

  • @polperro I wouldn't say the music biz created punk. Punk was a reaction to the music biz and THEN the music biz created it's version of punk.

Prog rock was a grass root movement made by people who loved music. Punk was a creation of PR superstar and business man Malcolm MacLaren. Who fooled everyone, the world's music journalists still haven't got it.

  • When was this recorded? :)

  • it dosent get much better than this

  • Life is for learning, and to learn you live every day a life! Learning! Though.. Will You ever be fully learned?

  • "Best" is so subjective ... I prefer to say they were the "most amazing band" ever!

  • My most favorit band!

...this great live performance blows all commercial musikshit out of your brain... ^^

    thx polperro

  • Yeah, God forbid that musicians should be able to play their instruments. Far better to manufacture the fake rebellious cause of "Punk" and use look-at-me-I've-got-a-rebellious-hairdo-and-I-spit-at-people-for-fun talentless yobs to make loads of money. Punk sold out before it even started - it was a creation of The Muzic Biz.

  • @polperro I wouldn't say the music biz created punk. Punk was a reaction to the music biz and THEN the music biz created it's version of punk.

  • 26/11/1974 live in Rome

  • I feel like a piece of bread that's just been dipped in a large bowl of cheese lava. My mind is an island, waiting for the ocean to consume it. I am.

  • thank you so much for posting this video =)

  • They are unreal. They are alot better then alot of commerical prog bands that I know of.

    This band is incredible!

  • these are great records of coordonate sounds of world. They are so unyears and so inventive

    TNX for their birth

Men Like them make EARTH tu turn

  • We need to get back to this kind of music and the society we had then as well.

They represent so much of what music should be.

  • Wow, no wonder why I my mind feels so vast.

Besides this is a great song, really complicated an virtuosity pour all over!

    Greetings from Seattle

  • Complex music stimulates the brain. More importantly, the parts that it stimulates help our intellectual capacity grow. These stimuli increase our ability to do other complex tasks with greater ease. It is a shame that the vocabulary of complex music has been drowned out by the uninspired noise that permeates our culture now. The idiocy that it spawns is in evidence everywhere.

  • @DrFoofyMan...I completely agree with your comment! I can't even subject myself to the crap on the radio any more.

  • @DrFoofyMan man, I totally agree with you! Everything is so minimalistic today, why doesnt anyone make such intricate complex art as Gentle Giant or other 70s prog acts? Its sad to live in a world where primitive music like Muse is considered progressive or experimental.

  • Comment removed

  • @ToadstoolMoon87 Muse...I commented upon their music on one forum some time ago. I stated how basic what they were doing was, and how it was not special at all. I then posted a link to my own music, and it was called "pompous" by one of the pseudo intellectuals there. I replied, "How can music be pompous? You are pompous, for you obviously do not understand the language of music, yet you feel empowered to criticize a master of it.".

  • @DrFoofyMan It's called dumbing down by design. Iti's easier to rob a society of idiots!

  • @DrFoofyMan why do you try to make me think of unpleasant things while i'm listening to such a music? try to write comments more positively.

  • @f3an0rS Because I have this power over you to make you think these unpleasant thoughts! YES! I do it because I can. :-)

  • @DrFoofyMan hehe it's ok, i'm laughing now ^^ this second post was much better ;-)

  • @DrFoofyMan Well put...but there are allways bad side effects. Complex music and intellectual capacity often lead to a very strange self-realization, which then leads to critical view on the world, which then leads to depression and social isolation. Or is it just me?

  • @Sunchild333 Wow. No, it's not just you. I fear that no advice I could offer would be of any value to you, since all of our paths are unique.

  • @DrFoofyMan It is good to know that there are people out there who arent mindless mainstream zobmies who dont expand their horizones.

  • Three Friends are on tour! Outrageous Kerry, Public Enemy Gary and the lovely Malcolm with Mick (10CC) +2..

  • kerry minnear was one scary musician--what a talent. All these guys played multiple instruments and when they all stopped and played drums together it sounded like rhythmic thunder live. A friend of mine who owned a club in D.C back in the 70's wanted to book them but could't because GG simply had too much equipment.

  • never be another band like GG amazing

  • Very nice:)) 5*****

thanks theodorus45 for sharing this video

  • Forgot all about this band, very nice music!

  • ..great Band, I love Gentle Giant ¡¡ thank's for the post.

  • This band is kickassmazingly good. I love them.

  • Never having heard the band and quite young, I was invited to see GG at Maple Leaf Gardens in 77(12 row floors, grin).... Probably my most memorable concert experience, and I'm still listening to them.

  • good for you buddy!

  • Seeing GG live in the 70s is one of the highlights of my life.

Imagine the musicanhip of symphony orchestra, the energy of Sex Pistols ond the funk of James Brown combined.

They were litterary bullied out of the business by british music journalists, who saw PR-genious and media clown Malcolm MacLaren as the new guru. (And all of them at the same time! Talk about brainwashed)

  • Beautiful. I love a lot what Gentle Giant brought in music. There's a high chemical between those guys. It's just great.

  • Stunning!! I've just re-discovered them now after a 20 year hiatus; as a musician in a band I am completely blown away by the amazing musicianship and complex but totally listenable songs. Can't get enough of 'em!!

  • this is a masterpiece.

  • Dave grohl on vocals

  • LOL

  • .. or Brian Blessed. Remember Edmund Blackadders father, the king.

  • I saw these guys at Anaheim Stadium in the mid 70's and they were phenomenal...They opened for Peter Frampton, and the headliners that day were Yes..........

  • Sad story this band has.. as most other good prog bands they were ruined by recordcompanies in the late 70s early 80s..

They have alot of good songs, and although i wouldnt chop my arm of to see them, i would, under circumstances, pay a sh*tload to see them perform.

    I raise my glass!

  • Simply masterful.

  • I'd chop off my right arm to see footage from the Acquiring the Taste tour. By the time I started seeing them in the late 70s they'd dropped almost all the early stuff from the set. Anyone got any??? please.

  • You Knew when you went to a Giant show, you were gonna get A SHOW, No band puts the effort in to fill the voids of the music.

  • goodness how many instuments does the fellow play. I enjoyed this music in the 70's as a pre-teen and now I am rediscovering...didn't know what i was listening to.

    m

  • that violin blows my mind every time

  • Meilleur band que G jamais vu!!! en proggess !

  • Not spam! Very interesting info for Gentle Giant fans!!

  • Gentle Giant - 17 October 2008 - Coolham, Sussex.

    Be there or be square.

  • how was it? being in Canada I was a default square

  • they played! man they need to tour a big tour in amarica

  • gods, all of 'em

blew me 'way first heaing them and nowadays

what a blessing this 'tube is

million thanks to you for postering this vid

  • Thank YouTube To get to see this footage is such a treat. Hi all my like people! If you were around for this band where are you? Our kind of people sure are not where I have been lately! Yes this is my favorite song of life it describes me perfectly!

  • Don't worry my friend you are not alone!

  • I really can't believe how good this is. It seems a real shame that the current generation aren't typically aware of this group. ( I'm 49 - old git that I am ) and I'll be listening to GG for a long time yet !

  • Why would they be, it's surprising anyone has heard of GG, they never got much airplay.

It is a shame that great music like this is marginalized in our current society.

  • I love the vibraphone solo!!!!! What a solo!!!!!

  • is it before the video from 1974 of the same song that is on the related videos?

  • @dedehhhh This is from 1973 I believe, because I don't see Phil Shulman anywhere

  • Is a real treat to see a band of this caliber perform, enormous talent!

  • That's right...

  • Saw these guys in the 70's at Anaheim Stadium... Remarkable!

  • its really hard to choose between which posted version I like better...I think the cello and violin harmonize better on this one

  • ~ joie de vivre ~

    :-)

  • in english please tantaluringen!! where is your dictonary? ;p

    gg rules!!

  • I think you'll find that is spelled "dictionary" . I'm still amazed how GG managed these complex pieces live and I was lucky enough to see them do it.

  • Wow! Saw them live in the 70s. It was marvelous.

  • The reason for the violin

  • Interesting to hear that Kerry is teaching. Back in the late seventies he used to live in Shaftesbury, Dorset and I remember him being brought in to play the tuned-percussion parts in my school's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe. Jeez that was a long time ago!

  • Agreed with Improbus this is far of what other bands now and then reaches. GG Rules forever!

  • ur absolutly right wiggisndesign !

  • Has anyone seen a film of them performing "Little brown jug"?

  • the best gg song

  • Gentle Giant, no one comes close to this, ever!

  • Wow... what a vibes solo. Tremendous.

  • 'Gentle Giant' Tapir art #6

    tapir6.ytmnd(dot com)

  • God.. 37 years ago and still the best music.

  • It's really amazing,...where those creatives Days?

  • I wish "Peel the Paint" & "Alucard" were on YouTube

  • excuse my poor typing yesterday....you get the idea tho...Tull and GG are 2 extraordinary bands with unique styles all their own. One does NOT "own" the other

  • I remember hearing "Just the Same" in the 80's. It became my theme song, but I never knew who performed it.

Trust me, I love this band. They truly out "Tull" Tull and out "Yes". Im amazed at how many of the band's instrumentalists double on other instruments. Sadly, this song doesnt do it for me. They are good, but nothing like the velocity and humor of Zappa. I would'nt put them even close to the band Henry Cow, in terms of compositional complexity.

  • Gentle Giant & Jethro Tull are 1 of my all-time favorite bands. I saw the Fiant twice, and Tull many times, and one does NOT outdo the other. They are each unique in their own way.

  • Seriously, what do we care about complexity?

It's exactly the same as "Steve Vai plays faster than Stevie Ray Vaughan so he is better" to me.

I like a lot of stuff that are more complex than this AND Zappa and that's not why I think they are better.

  • I mean, for exemple: if they don't think they need polytonality (not sure about how to say it, I'm french lol) to express themselves in a composition why would they use it? It would be exactly the same as many guitar player who shred when they don't need to (just to show off)

  • Comparing unique great bands is futile to me. Yes is uniquely YES. Tull is Tull. Nobody can be Zappa. But GG brought something else to progressive music different than Cow, etc... And it was brilliant. I saw all the above then and GG twice at close range doing this song and others early-mid 70's. They were incredible!

  • Oops, sorry, no offence intended - I do tend to call girls "guys" as well! Good luck, maybe you'll be a Gentle Giantess one day?! :-)

  • yeah for real

  • You're one lucky guy. Tell him how much he's appreciated by us YouTubers please. Good luck. By the way, bald is best!!

  • I'm a girl for one but i have a lesson in 25 mins so i will do!

  • Wow dude!! For REAL!?!

  • i can still remember the day i met phil shulman and he told me too keep practicing and i told him to fuck off not knowing who he was. thanks phil i did practice, and you know what, i've develop since then when i was 4 and i can tell you this, well fuck my ass and call me a bitch

  • this band was the very best of the intelligent rock bands of the 70's ! none of your talentless crap here

  • haha that man with the white cello is my piano teacher! honestly it is

  • you're saying that you actually take piano lessons from THE Kerry Minnear?!

  • Yeah! He's bald now!! lol, he's such an excellent pianist, and such a nice guy!

  • you must be f****** kidding! my regards to him. damn! i'm gonna cry.

  • but according DRT Entertainment, Kerry Minnear did become "a music teacher and sometime television scorer" so it must be true.

  • Sometime during the early 80's I was in Birmingham I came across for advert Kerry Minnear's advert for him as a music teacher. I rang him up and he seemed not very interested in talkinng about GG so I left him alone. I saw John Weathers in 'Man' and he told me that Kerry had discovered religion

  • I apopolgise for my appaling use of English in my last post

  • "haha that man with the white cello is my piano teacher! honestly it is"

Well if I was you, I would buy every Gentle Giant album you can and if you atain 1000th of Kerry's talent you will be brilliant my friend. :-)

  • What a find...Just a sample of GG's multi-talented musicians. The drummer also plays vibes. The lead singer plays sax and clarinet, and they all play recorders, and God only knows what else. Just remarkable!

  • On a BBC appearance in '78 on the song "Memories of Old Days" from the album "The Missing Piece" every member of the band, including Weathers plays guitar. Ray Shulman is incredible on the live songs when he duets with Gary Green on acoustic six. See various postings of "Octopus" medley vids.

  • Previous comment was in response to dugel1. How do you get replies to follow who you're replying to?!

  • they will always remain second to none, rush, jethro tull or dream theater

  • I still like yelling "Giant" at other(boring) concerts, just as a non-sequitor and as tribute to this awesome musical force. Hear one of the bros became a big time LA music producer.

  • well when 5 musicians (or 6 at their debut) plays 35 instruments (or so) it prooves that their musicality is way over anything that has ever been done on this planet... way over on the very top!!! genius, really they are...

  • The credit I give Tull is that they are also awesome, but did what many bands can't do,and that is to get more of the masses to listen to them. Though these guys are unreal, most never heard of them, nor do most people care. It's over their heads, and it doesen't keep their interest. There IS something to say for a stedy groove or a hook. They needed more songs like Freehand! Still, awesome.

  • i saw them open for tull and they blew tull away lolol

  • Hey. I saw GG several times.

    An AMAZING experimental band.

But how can ANYONE blow the Tull of the 70s away???

  • Dont think I've ever heard of this group, but I LOVE the music!!!

  • Une merveille musicale.

  • I can't get enough of these Giant clips. I want to turn the world on to this music as an example of what rock music can be but wonder if the unexperienced ear of todays music audience can truly appreciate the depths of such an amazing group and what they meant to theri fans.

  • The greatest experimental rock band ever.

DEP are children compared to the compositional astucity of Giant.

I can't believe somebody would recommend those silly mathematicians on a Giant thread.

  • foda

  • EXQUISITE!!!! Pure BRILLIANCE!!

That xylophone solo is killing me!

Hats of for those five geniuses. Noone can top them, never ever...

  • I've never seen this band live, but I've been a very big fan for years! Great, weird and extremely beautiful music made by extremely talented (multi-instrumental) musicians! Hail GG! :D

  • Excelente! Há muitos anos que queria ver isto

  • Wow i logged on and thought what the hell i will type in GG and i found these vids..I remember my dad listening to these guys when i was little and i liked it then..My dad has this GG dvd we watched it today and all i got to say is WOW, AWESOME. Like my dad said they were way beyond there years with music and talent..My dad has seen them 4 times, once when they opened up for Jethro Tull..

  • Madvillain sampled the chorus part of this song.

  • BTW: If anyone knows whatever happened to Kerry Minnear (keys), John Weathers (drums) and other assorted members, I'd be curious to know.

  • GG split in 1980 and there's been no band like them since. Ray Shulman (violin) went on to produce the Sugarcubes & The Sundays. Gary Green (guit) ended up living in Illinois and playing in cover bands. The most ironic afterlife, given GG's music adventurousness, was Derek Shulman's (lead vox). He became a major label exec in the 80s and was partly responsible for giving the world bands like Bon Jovi and Cinderella!

  • Gentle Giant really was chock full of talent, and originality. This song really shows how their music crossed many genres. I saw then in Boston in 1975. I never forgot the experience!

  • One of my most favorite videos. It's also one of the most universally accessible examples of cross-genre composition and musicianship.

  • bear

    gentle ben

    mulder

  • Muito bom...Nota 1000

  • Certainly one of the most creative and innovative band of all time. They never followed trends or styles, just set them. If you havent't purchased any of their dvd's, do yourself a huge favor and check them out. I believe that GG's style and sound will eventually become popular again and set the standard for future progressive music. I consider myself extremly lucky to have seen them live three times in the Albany, NY area and also to have met and talked to all members except John Weathers.

  • gosh, these guys are so amazing

  • Great song by a great band.

  • the most original band I've listened until now.

i doubt i'll find another band that is more original.

  • well try the dillinger escape plan...

  • 'Funny Ways' is the track, really demonstrates the versatility of the members in playing a range of instruments, a well-loved band, no doubt.

  • Saw them twice. Bought all their albums.

  • you are lucky!!!!

  • Loved them since 1973.

  • Incredible band!

  • one of the best prog rock bands of 70-ties along with King crimson, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull. Respect !

  • Awesome

  • I love Gentle Giant and always have. It was such an unusual and eclectic group...Never well known and only appreciated by well developed ears and good taste musicians. Non commercial music, real, creative, expansive and boundless. Thanks for your video gift. I surely appreciate it.

  • i think this is from th epower and the pashions tour

because gary green has a spade or club simble on his sleve. but its just a guess.

regardless. love live gentle giant in all their splentous glorey

  • Well this is from '74 I believe so you're most likely correct. However, the pedant in me must remind you that it's "The Power & The Glory". ;)

  • lol oh yeah glory i got the power and the pashion is a eloy song. but yeah i ment power an glory.

grate album. i have almost all the lp's buts a few. or their last albums i dont have
