@polperro I wouldn't say the music biz created punk. Punk was a reaction to the music biz and THEN the music biz created it's version of punk.
Prog rock was a grass root movement made by people who loved music. Punk was a creation of PR superstar and business man Malcolm MacLaren. Who fooled everyone, the world's music journalists still haven't got it.
Yeah, God forbid that musicians should be able to play their instruments. Far better to manufacture the fake rebellious cause of "Punk" and use look-at-me-I've-got-a-rebellious-hairdo-and-I-spit-at-people-for-fun talentless yobs to make loads of money. Punk sold out before it even started - it was a creation of The Muzic Biz.

@DrFoofyMan man, I totally agree with you! Everything is so minimalistic today, why doesnt anyone make such intricate complex art as Gentle Giant or other 70s prog acts? Its sad to live in a world where primitive music like Muse is considered progressive or experimental.
@ToadstoolMoon87 Muse...I commented upon their music on one forum some time ago. I stated how basic what they were doing was, and how it was not special at all. I then posted a link to my own music, and it was called "pompous" by one of the pseudo intellectuals there. I replied, "How can music be pompous? You are pompous, for you obviously do not understand the language of music, yet you feel empowered to criticize a master of it.".
@DrFoofyMan Well put...but there are allways bad side effects. Complex music and intellectual capacity often lead to a very strange self-realization, which then leads to critical view on the world, which then leads to depression and social isolation. Or is it just me?
kerry minnear was one scary musician--what a talent. All these guys played multiple instruments and when they all stopped and played drums together it sounded like rhythmic thunder live. A friend of mine who owned a club in D.C back in the 70's wanted to book them but could't because GG simply had too much equipment.
Never having heard the band and quite young, I was invited to see GG at Maple Leaf Gardens in 77(12 row floors, grin).... Probably my most memorable concert experience, and I'm still listening to them.
Seeing GG live in the 70s is one of the highlights of my life.
Imagine the musicanhip of symphony orchestra, the energy of Sex Pistols ond the funk of James Brown combined.
They were litterary bullied out of the business by british music journalists, who saw PR-genious and media clown Malcolm MacLaren as the new guru. (And all of them at the same time! Talk about brainwashed)
Stunning!! I've just re-discovered them now after a 20 year hiatus; as a musician in a band I am completely blown away by the amazing musicianship and complex but totally listenable songs. Can't get enough of 'em!!
I saw these guys at Anaheim Stadium in the mid 70's and they were phenomenal...They opened for Peter Frampton, and the headliners that day were Yes..........
I'd chop off my right arm to see footage from the Acquiring the Taste tour. By the time I started seeing them in the late 70s they'd dropped almost all the early stuff from the set. Anyone got any??? please.
goodness how many instuments does the fellow play. I enjoyed this music in the 70's as a pre-teen and now I am rediscovering...didn't know what i was listening to.
17th Oct, Coolham - Sussex, Rentle Giant, first outing for band with original Gentle Giant members Gary Green and Malcolm Mortimore playing GG tunes with other fine musicians, John Donaldson, Andy Williams and Roger Carey.
Tickets £12.50 each, please book as very limited space.
Thank YouTube To get to see this footage is such a treat. Hi all my like people! If you were around for this band where are you? Our kind of people sure are not where I have been lately! Yes this is my favorite song of life it describes me perfectly!
I really can't believe how good this is. It seems a real shame that the current generation aren't typically aware of this group. ( I'm 49 - old git that I am ) and I'll be listening to GG for a long time yet !
I think you'll find that is spelled "dictionary" . I'm still amazed how GG managed these complex pieces live and I was lucky enough to see them do it.
Interesting to hear that Kerry is teaching. Back in the late seventies he used to live in Shaftesbury, Dorset and I remember him being brought in to play the tuned-percussion parts in my school's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe. Jeez that was a long time ago!
excuse my poor typing yesterday....you get the idea tho...Tull and GG are 2 extraordinary bands with unique styles all their own. One does NOT "own" the other
I remember hearing "Just the Same" in the 80's. It became my theme song, but I never knew who performed it.
Trust me, I love this band. They truly out "Tull" Tull and out "Yes". Im amazed at how many of the band's instrumentalists double on other instruments. Sadly, this song doesnt do it for me. They are good, but nothing like the velocity and humor of Zappa. I would'nt put them even close to the band Henry Cow, in terms of compositional complexity.
Gentle Giant & Jethro Tull are 1 of my all-time favorite bands. I saw the Fiant twice, and Tull many times, and one does NOT outdo the other. They are each unique in their own way.
I mean, for exemple: if they don't think they need polytonality (not sure about how to say it, I'm french lol) to express themselves in a composition why would they use it? It would be exactly the same as many guitar player who shred when they don't need to (just to show off)
Comparing unique great bands is futile to me. Yes is uniquely YES. Tull is Tull. Nobody can be Zappa. But GG brought something else to progressive music different than Cow, etc... And it was brilliant. I saw all the above then and GG twice at close range doing this song and others early-mid 70's. They were incredible!
i can still remember the day i met phil shulman and he told me too keep practicing and i told him to fuck off not knowing who he was. thanks phil i did practice, and you know what, i've develop since then when i was 4 and i can tell you this, well fuck my ass and call me a bitch
Sometime during the early 80's I was in Birmingham I came across for advert Kerry Minnear's advert for him as a music teacher. I rang him up and he seemed not very interested in talkinng about GG so I left him alone. I saw John Weathers in 'Man' and he told me that Kerry had discovered religion
What a find...Just a sample of GG's multi-talented musicians. The drummer also plays vibes. The lead singer plays sax and clarinet, and they all play recorders, and God only knows what else. Just remarkable!
On a BBC appearance in '78 on the song "Memories of Old Days" from the album "The Missing Piece" every member of the band, including Weathers plays guitar. Ray Shulman is incredible on the live songs when he duets with Gary Green on acoustic six. See various postings of "Octopus" medley vids.
I still like yelling "Giant" at other(boring) concerts, just as a non-sequitor and as tribute to this awesome musical force. Hear one of the bros became a big time LA music producer.
well when 5 musicians (or 6 at their debut) plays 35 instruments (or so) it prooves that their musicality is way over anything that has ever been done on this planet... way over on the very top!!! genius, really they are...
The credit I give Tull is that they are also awesome, but did what many bands can't do,and that is to get more of the masses to listen to them. Though these guys are unreal, most never heard of them, nor do most people care. It's over their heads, and it doesen't keep their interest. There IS something to say for a stedy groove or a hook. They needed more songs like Freehand! Still, awesome.
I can't get enough of these Giant clips. I want to turn the world on to this music as an example of what rock music can be but wonder if the unexperienced ear of todays music audience can truly appreciate the depths of such an amazing group and what they meant to theri fans.
I've never seen this band live, but I've been a very big fan for years! Great, weird and extremely beautiful music made by extremely talented (multi-instrumental) musicians! Hail GG! :D
Wow i logged on and thought what the hell i will type in GG and i found these vids..I remember my dad listening to these guys when i was little and i liked it then..My dad has this GG dvd we watched it today and all i got to say is WOW, AWESOME. Like my dad said they were way beyond there years with music and talent..My dad has seen them 4 times, once when they opened up for Jethro Tull..
GG split in 1980 and there's been no band like them since. Ray Shulman (violin) went on to produce the Sugarcubes & The Sundays. Gary Green (guit) ended up living in Illinois and playing in cover bands. The most ironic afterlife, given GG's music adventurousness, was Derek Shulman's (lead vox). He became a major label exec in the 80s and was partly responsible for giving the world bands like Bon Jovi and Cinderella!
Gentle Giant really was chock full of talent, and originality. This song really shows how their music crossed many genres. I saw then in Boston in 1975. I never forgot the experience!
Certainly one of the most creative and innovative band of all time. They never followed trends or styles, just set them. If you havent't purchased any of their dvd's, do yourself a huge favor and check them out. I believe that GG's style and sound will eventually become popular again and set the standard for future progressive music. I consider myself extremly lucky to have seen them live three times in the Albany, NY area and also to have met and talked to all members except John Weathers.
I love Gentle Giant and always have. It was such an unusual and eclectic group...Never well known and only appreciated by well developed ears and good taste musicians. Non commercial music, real, creative, expansive and boundless. Thanks for your video gift. I surely appreciate it.
I want this video on my WX161 unit.

Still, awesome.

i saw them open for tull and they blew tull away lolol

Hey. I saw GG several times.
An AMAZING experimental band.
But how can ANYONE blow the Tull of the 70s away???

I can't get enough of these Giant clips. I want to turn the world on to this music as an example of what rock music can be but wonder if the unexperienced ear of todays music audience can truly appreciate the depths of such an amazing group and what they meant to theri fans.

The greatest experimental rock band ever.
DEP are children compared to the compositional astucity of Giant.
I can't believe somebody would recommend those silly mathematicians on a Giant thread.

BTW: If anyone knows whatever happened to Kerry Minnear (keys), John Weathers (drums) and other assorted members, I'd be curious to know.

One of my most favorite videos. It's also one of the most universally accessible examples of cross-genre composition and musicianship.

'Funny Ways' is the track, really demonstrates the versatility of the members in playing a range of instruments, a well-loved band, no doubt.

I love Gentle Giant and always have. It was such an unusual and eclectic group...Never well known and only appreciated by well developed ears and good taste musicians. Non commercial music, real, creative, expansive and boundless. Thanks for your video gift. I surely appreciate it.
