It was based on Luther's Bible, which in turn was based on Erasmus' Greek text (2nd Ed). The manuscripts behind that were few and late (the oldest from the 10th century). Also a natural reading of the revelation of John indicates that it was a contemporary he was assigning the name to: "It is the number of a man" not "It is the number of a future man."

@insanearadil ALIF MADDA is like the punctuation mark used in the Spanish language for vowels known as accented vowels. e.g. á, é, í, ó, ú (In English language this practice doesn't exist). Alif' Madda is like using the Spanish "á" instead of "a" to express a stronger vocal sound. Alif is an Arabic letter and EVERYONE KNOWS THAT but to have the audacity to say that alif' madda doesn't exist in Arabic is completely crazy and means 1 of 3 things: you're 100% crazy or 100% ignorant or a 100% liar.
