  • I cried so badly

  • I LOVE somaliaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i'm proud to be somali love love waris caadi ma tihid flimkaan waxan daawadey shan mar walahy cadi ma ahen , thanks waris

  • watching just the trailer got me in tears!

  • I LOVE YOU LIYA KEBEDE....you are a true women...you have insoired me to believe in dreams......you jusr freakin rock

  • we have the same name

  • being a somali women... this video brought me to tears because i know exactly what she went thru.... old generations believe cutting a girl while prevent her of being a women that walks the street... i know not to do this to any of my daughters... Waris thank you for being a voice to allot of young women over the world who are voiceless...

  • Great movie based on her book, Dessert Flower. I support her campaign to abolish the Pharaonic custom.

Where she depicts our culture as oppressive to girls or women's free choice of marriage is an exaggeration to win Western audience, methinks.

Our women are treated honorably with deep respect and in most aspects as equal to men. This is also an observation made by a European explorer in 1860 upon his first ever visit to Cape Guardafui (North Eastern Somalia).

  • I just finished reading Desert Flower, and I was in awe. I'll be in line to see the movie on the first night, and I'll surely be making my way to Africa in efforts to stop FGM.

  • What's the song from 0.36, please? :-)

  • hey waris dirie hey aslamaleykum abaayo if it true that you left islam you should slit your throat cause you cost your family and people great sham and sham to all muslim around the world but one thing i coment you on is standing up for women all around the world my ex wife is from brawa somali and she was cut and my new wife from kenya is cut too i don't tell them how it makes me cry andswear to allah i will never do that if he bless me with a little girl

  • What an amazing and inspiring film. Some ignorant comments here are disturbing and remind me of that Solmali worker in the hospital when he assumingly translated her what the British Doctor was saying about helping her and doing a surgery to stop the pain. He told her the opposite

"you bring shame on your people".

  • If a western family would have done such act on their child, they would be put to jail for severe child abuse. Yet in some other places it's considered a tradition. It's only few steps from killing you own child

  • Heii, does anybody know the name of the last sountrack? I would be really grateful! :)

  • this is an amaizing story and book, the movie is a must see, genital mutilation should be band all over the world, and i f religions practice this form , it should be done by a doctor and priest as witness, so that the women or men don't suffer

  • I can't believe I haven't heard of this movie? Looks very good

  • yo she did not do the movie . . the actor is liya kebede an ethiopian christian . . she only wrote the book

    . . but i still think thats disrespectful on her part as a somali . . !!

  • if you know how is Somalia and you are from the side of cut the genitals of the humans you should be in jail, I got friends from Somalia and they all against this horrible acts

  • just watched it today,,,it was great,,,, i am opposed to both male and female circumcision

  • @chihuahuabebi Me too. My parents said to do it on my sons but I refuse. I have not spoken to them for almost four years. You see I am a woman and have had to go though that so the cycle had to stop somewhere. I am so happy that my kids are as natural as the were meant to be.

  • This book changed me dramatically. I was so ignorant and blind to the whole issue of female genital mutilation: I had NO idea. And now I cannot bear the understanding that this is still happening to girls. Waris highlights something that is so necessary: the plight of the african female. Say what you like, her story has opened my eyes and that is just what is needed to change this world. I cannot wait to see this movie.

  • fuck this bitch her book is just a big stupid LIE!!!! I know what is in like Somalia trust me... she just likes being the victim

  • @mstrueluver09 stop trying to cover it up, we all know it happens, and its barbaric. its time that more peopel became aware of it and help this women.

  • @crashitbaby17 I am NOT trying 2 cover up a shit!!! and what do u mean with help this women! thats what is making me angry! help her with what? she has more money than she can deal with dis hoe! and all she is talking is about her self god damn it! well I wont share a tear 4 her when I have seen the real victims that really need help 4 real thats all I am saying and she is fuckin exaggerating

  • @mstrueluver09 wow, are you slow or something, the only thing this lady is doing is putting the situation out there so that more peopel became aware of this issue and do things to help prevent it from happning. She's using her own experiance to show the physical and psychological pain it causes. and i don't get why you mentioned her wealth as if it has anything to do with the situation, when it fact it makes her even more comendabel for using her wealth and fame to help other women:)

  • @crashitbaby17 I am sorry but are you..... a lawyer????

  • @mstrueluver09 Perhaps instead of being on here and raging against this, you instead try to make a difference. What is your negative presence here achieving? Nothing. Were you to put your energy into more positive directions, perhaps something better could arise from it. In any event, although you say she is no longer a victim, I find it very difficult to believe that someone could experience such a thing as genital mutilation and ever be able to "get over it". Life doesn't work like that.

  • @mstrueluver09 OMG, are you like retarded or something? , so what if your somali , and you understand how somali people are ? like , what tha fuck does that have to do with this ? This IS a problem , and I don't know if your just stupid or ingorant to see that .. And of course she is A VICTIM, so keep your dumb-ass your god damn self , .. Oh , and I'm somali too ..

  • 2:21 I see a nipple

  • This looks amazing. Waris Dirie is an inspiration. Love Liya Kebede too.

  • BTW this would be an AWESOME TOPIC on the TYRA BANKS SHOW-FGM and this movie. Since Tyra was a model like Liya and Waris -what a match too.
