Yeah dude, save those treasures, you will get your reward in some decades when you could sell them to a museum and get tons of money, and they will live there forever :D
I'm so confused... I don't know wether to envy or respect you :) But I'll make the compromise and consider you the luckyest bastard that ever lived to see the rise of 3D pioneering and the downfall of the company that made all the technology we use today in our gaming rigs possible. Accept my most sincere congratulations along with all the respect. I am just starting my 3Dfx collection, already have 10 cards, but the only ones lacking are the 5500&6000 series. Guess the 6000 will remain a dream.
@georgeleus Well there was some luck being in the right place and the right time, but most of it was just hard work tracking down people who had the boards and being ready.
I have 2 Voodoo 5 5500's, but one has a bad master chip, the other has a bad secondary chip. The one with the bad secondary chip actually works, but it only works half, so it's effectively a Voodoo 4 4500.
I've tried looking around to see if I can have the one of the good chips un-soldered, and re-soldered to the other, but it would probably be very costly, not to mention require a master technician of some kind.
how many different module layouts do they have of a 4 chip solution? That 8 Chips solution looks finished and ready to sell only 1! That One chips olution at the end looks complex and finished with a white pricetag:)
i have a problem with my vodoo 5 5500, when i plug it to the universal agp port it starts to display the image in my monitor but it also displays vertical lines, i tested other cards in my intel 815 motherboard and they dont display that problem, i noticed that my voodoo 5 has some scratches in the golden "connectors" that plugs in the agp port, does someone knows how to fix that problem ?
Have you tried cleaning the fingers with a pencil eraser? Sometimes a dull varnish builds up on them and causes them not to make good contact with the slot. If the contacts are deeply gouged, a fine trace of solder might work. Just be careful not to bridge the finger you are working on to the ones next to it.
@gamewizard I already cleaned with alcohol the contacts of the card and the contacts of the agp slot , i am gonna try the trace of solder, thank you for the advice :)
@putabuela the scratches on the gold part happens to every card when its inserted into a slot, and the vertical lines could possibly mean your card is about to die on you
@Dorisequador its actually 4 gpu's and the other fans are covering the memory. Their is a computer sub system called AAlchemy and the best one uses 32x 3dfx VSA 100 chips with a total of 2 gigs of video ram which is 8x the ammount of vsa-100 gpus then the Voodoo5 6k uses. and the crappiest AAlchemy uses 8x vsa 100 chips with 256 megs of ram. Now thats voodoo power
@killerbee230 I have a few hundred prototypes and a small number of production boards. I use to have hundreds of boxed production boards but sold them off and kept the prototypes.
Man you have rampage! How did you got the only one working board? I heard that there are 3 of them, one isn't working with both DX and GL and its testing board. One got lost - nobody knows where is it? is it that lost one?
@WizardNumberNext There was about 20 total Rampages made from the get go, the first 10 were test boards with the second 10 being more polished. Who knows where they all ended up! New boards were usually made in batches of 10 as they were for testing and refining the design.
Were there different Rampage protos or just the one? I read that they planned to make single and dual GPU configurations with and without a separate T&L chip, so that would have been 4 different protos right there.
@gamewizard The only protos that were made were the first 10 boards used for testing ram and other function and then the next 10 which had the "fixes" the ram test boards (A0) have the "gpu" socket. The A1 boards have mounted chips and other improvements. The dual chip boards were only in the design stage, the T&L chip was taped out but no boards were made. Rumor is the first batch of chips showed up when 3dfx was locking the doors.
OMG that 1 card has 8 F-ing GPU's! i all most came in my shorts!
i Love 3dfx and will never forget! my first computer was a AMD K6-2 400 256Mg with a 3dfx voodoo3 3000. lattor on it got a voodoo5 5500 and i still have it!!! time to load it up and get some Quake III going! >>>>>RIP 3dfx<<<<<<
Koolio. I still have an AMD K6-2 333 runnning with a 3DFX Voodoo Banshee. The Banshee had just come out and so did the 333. I think I paid 2k for that dang system! Loved it to bits though.
@K31TH3R Thanks! I love what 3dfx did back in the day, one day I'll let them go if I no longer appreciate what went into them. I still have plans for doing driver work with the Rampage board and doing benchmarks.
What a hype around such an outdated and unstable working product. Maybe I should search for my Voodoo 5 5500 and my Voodoo 5 6000 and run a test on my old Pentium 4 System with AGP-Slot for fun. Maybe with that processor it runs better than on my slow old gaming box from 1999. But even with a Core i7 that thing would never come close to an X850XL. Only if you find a condition where the driver for the X850 fails and that one for the Voodoo works.
3dfx is still maintaining the longest graphic card title today........a 15.5 inches voodoo 5 6000 make 5970, gtx 295 and gtx 480 look like little bitch....
they have an aalchemy system with 32 vsa 100 chips but their super picky about games. my uncle has one with just 8 vsa 100's and i could only get it to play very few open gl games. I got Jedi outcast and a few others to work. I think its due to quantum 3d's drivers. Do ya know if their are any 3rd party drivers?
question: whats the one in the middle at 0:12... i mean... trhe oner with 8 (!) fans!!!! Is THAT the legendary Quantum3D AAlchemy 8164 with 8 VSA-100-GPUs????
GeForce GTX 495 will be the new GX2 btw ;) two of these and you have Quad SLI with DX11 8) The Dream of the 6000 lives on even with today's hardware, hence the basics are still uhm there rofl.
@gsdonovan Hah, cause you said asinine it reminds me of Hank Hill :P Ontopic: You lucky git! Aside from collecting Voodoo's, I've also started collecting Rendition Verite cards and will be soon receiving a PowerVR based card which is also pretty interesting.
@gsdonovan nice collection, I remember playing ff7 on my voodoo 3 3000 and that was supersmooth compared to voodoo 2, 3dfx blown it as they were the leaders in their time.

I have a Voodoo 5 !! I took off the fans by leaving it in the freazer then they just sliped off ..I am still looking for a heat sink to put on that fits.
A few months ago I landed two 7900GTX Duos for $60 and those were Nvidia's first attempt for a dual gpu card before the well known 7950gx2. Those are huge on their own and slightly longer than the 5970. :O Barely had room.
amazing things were so expensive now they give them away prectically and companies whom make new stuff don;t even use a decent graphic card intergrated which mostly are complete garbage unless you buy the upper level laptops or build a clone.
At the time of voodoo 5500, it was actually slower than the ati and nvidia counterpart, however considering the voodoo 5500 was only SDR memory and the GeForce 2 GTS and Radeon DDR were both DDR memory, the Voodoo 550 it was still a crazy piece of design.
Another factor to put it in, was that it was release later than expected, for it was suppose to compete with the Geforce 256 and the ATI 128 RAGE MAXX which both used sdr memory.
3dfx Voodoo brought PC gaming to a whole new level. Still remember buying my first VooDoo addin card and Played Quake II for the first time... My jaw just dropped. I was finally able to put down my PS1 and play games on my PC (P233MX with like 128 megs of ram and a 500meg or so HD) ~sigh~ Those were the good ole days. Or letting Unreal intro just loop just to see the awesome graphics.
Np..I had it from the father of my friend..that works on computer..and he likes to play games a lot.He gived it to me..He plays everyday Diablo..eh,i remmember the old glide functions of some games..after quake 2 comes unreal and i had that graphics..its fantastic to play on it..
Sorry, it is hard to believe you. This card never reached the market. Do you have ANY evidence? It would be nice to know because we 3dfx Fans are tracking the cards to prevent them from getting lost.
I'm pretty sure that is not an 8 core voodoo5, but a 4 core one with double fans for the ram. 3dfx had so many problems getting the 4 chips off and running.
the coolest thing i have is a allchemy 8164 system that i got cheap in my opinion of 600 dollars off ebay. but i really like the 8 gpu v5, cause the aalchemy has problems running alot of games :)
heh the V6K killer would of been the Specter 3000 this one would of had Dual Rampage 2000 rasterizers and a Sage T&L chip, this thing would of pulverized the 6000 and even a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 perhaps.
Come on gdonovan test that Rampy people have been waiting a long time for this ;)
My speculation of it's perfoamnce is between a Voodoo5 5500 AGP and a Voodoo5 6000 , thus faster than a 5500AGP but slower than 6000 if the app supports SLI.
So I figure it would give 8.8 real GB per sec bandwidth, probably more, probably less.
the Rampage is actually the Specter 1000 AGP 32MB 128 bit DDR Rev.A1 4700 week 47 year 2000. it's the budget version of the 3dfx Specter series.
So it is true we after that sad month that one of the best went down we have been gaming on crap cards. I knew that the Rampage could beat at least a geforce 4 card but competing against a x850xl I have to be a skeptic till shown tangible results.
i have a voodoo 5 5500 and i want to remplace the biggest solid capacitor but on top it say 10 470 6..u know on top...do u know what that mean? mF, volts, degress...thanx a lot.
i was a voodoo fan. glide was much faster than opengl back then...

I was finally able to put down my PS1 and play games on my PC (P233MX with like 128 megs of ram and a 500meg or so HD) ~sigh~ Those were the good ole days. Or letting Unreal intro just loop just to see the awesome graphics.

@shippainoki
Glad i'm not the only sado who sits and watches the UNREAL intro on my voodoo 2sli / 5500 lol

naik2222 2 years ago
Sorry, it is hard to believe you. This card never reached the market. Do you have ANY evidence? It would be nice to know because we 3dfx Fans are tracking the cards to prevent them from getting lost.
Kaitou1988 2 years ago
hehe..im joking :D But I had Voodoo 3 3000 and some 3Dfx..xD i remember the 3D savage graphics cards xD
naik2222 2 years ago
oh dang, i was exited too, an 8 core v5 :) would be nice
PsilocybinDream 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure that is not an 8 core voodoo5, but a 4 core one with double fans for the ram. 3dfx had so many problems getting the 4 chips off and running.
yachacha 2 years ago
Never stated it was an 8 core V5-6000, it was done as a joke at 3dfx.

the coolest thing i have is a allchemy 8164 system that i got cheap in my opinion of 600 dollars off ebay. but i really like the 8 gpu v5, cause the aalchemy has problems running alot of games :)

Is it even possible to put more fans onto a graphics card
Xdrives 2 years ago

gsdonovan 2 years ago
heh the V6K killer would of been the Specter 3000 this one would of had Dual Rampage 2000 rasterizers and a Sage T&L chip, this thing would of pulverized the 6000 and even a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 perhaps.
obiwankenobi28 2 years ago

Hi, Rampage it's your or lend from Jindra Semenec?
honyBRNO 2 years ago
The Rampage works, I'll be doing some benchmarks in the coming year. I'm very busy and take a long term view of things, no hurry.
gsdonovan 2 years ago
Is that Rampage working? Can it beat Geforce 4?
PeteRoy 2 years ago
rampage can beat ALL the radeons to the X850xxl, and Geforce 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and maybe (Not tested) 7.
Farao29 2 years ago
