  • God he's skinny

  • ah look at this dork's hair <3

  • Who hasn't fallen asleep witht the tv on??

  • I'm from America and i think they are awesome :D

  • I'm so proud to be canadian and nova Scotian at that, there's him and classified Jon lajoie making it big :) plus picnic face just got a tv show! I love you Canada -3

  • i love how so many guys who write music like this are skrawny :D it makes me feel good to be a skrawny kid!

  • he looks and sings like TomPetty, i cant unsee it

  • Canada's musical talent per capita is through the roof...

  • If you're Canadian and you don't want to be Americanized, don't let yourself be. Stop being passive aggressive and start listening to Canadian bands, watching Canadian films, knowing your history, speaking French and not just English, and buy Canadian.

If you don't, well then you don't mind being the 51st state. And that's fine and dandy and up to you entirely. But if you like being Canadian, then stand up for it and forge your own national identity.

  • @fizzypopism i aint learning fench

  • @TheWomanlyBrothers Why?

It makes it easier to get a job, people who learn another language have higher IQs, you can pick up chicks, it's a patriotic duty, and it's intellectually stimulating.

  • @fizzypopism THIS. So many people whine about how they don't want to be Americanized and then at the same time they insist that anything Canadian ~must~ be inferior. Pick one or the other... and in my opinion Canada produces some of the best music in the world, so we should embrace it :D

  • @themoley91 Stay excellent, bro. The thing is, I'll admit that Canada is lacking in some areas culture wise. But it isn't because we're inept, it's because whatever talent we have runs off to the States, or we don't support it.

Either way, Canada's problems are not because of some great foreign invasion, or famine. Our problem is a lazy as fuck population who aspire to do nothing for a country that provided so much.

  • @themoley91 i hate frogs so shut the fuck up

  • @TheWomanlyBrothers The fuck's wrong with frogs? Granted toads are supposed to give you warts, but you're just being an whinny bitch.

  • Ahaha, this video is like the story of my life. I hate watching movies with my roomie and her bf :P

  • This is what great guitar pop sounds like: tight, lean, concise, great witty ironic lyrics, social relevance hidden inside a simple boy-loses-girl story.

I love this tune and this and this band/songwriter

  • Representin the NORTH SIDE

    C to the ANADA

    BITCH

  • nova scotia baby represent

  • Pretty boring video for a great and fun song. I like the stage. Wish more had happened.

  • he is wayy to fuckin cute

  • this song never gets old, and joel just kets better with every record, he makes me pround to be from nova scotia.

  • @mcecchbc1 Joel, along with Matt Mays and Thrush Hermit make me proud to be from Halifax!

  • I'll be he still gets i.d.'ed from time to time when he buys beer!

  • lol im not even canadian and i love this song. i wanna move to canada soooo bad.

  • Btw, this song is to Canada because Joel plaskett is from nova scotia Canada, as well as me

  • well, either way.

but it's called "true *patriot* love".

  • I don't think it has anything to do with countries.

more about the losing of a loved one to someone else. a country is just to associate a sense of nationalism.

  • there are two themes in the song:

    1) losing a girl to another guy

    2) the relationship between canada and the usa, especially the americanization of canadian society

why would you just randomly "associate a sense of nationalism" to a song?

why not just add it to "nowhere with you" or something?

it's because it's one of the themes of the song, which the song is named after.

    really.

  • @snoopdoggfanclub

I agree with you're analysis. It can of course be taken as a song about losing a girl. But lines like "I wanna believe I belong" or "the dawn's early light has taken you from me" as well as the Canadian flag behind the band show that it can also be about Canada's present lack of an independent identity.

  • CANADA WON GOLD!!!! SUCK THAT USA

  • This song does seem appropriate right now, doesn't it?! :D

  • the songs about the US winning, though

  • I never saw it that way.

  • well, it's about the americanizatin of canada. joel's joel, the girl's canada, and the other guy is usa. no?

"we raise the white flag so they can paint it red and blue"

  • how so? True patriot love are lyrics from O Canada.

  • the name is kind of ironic.

joel's setting himself up as a true patriot for caring that everyone else doesn't care.

so, for everyone else, it's ironic.

  • @ZZea123 Oh, come on... it was good fun so be a good sport.

  • This is the true music !

  • i THINK aPRIL wINE REALY OPENED PPLS EYES TO EAST COAST MUSIC..tHANK GOD THEY DID OR ELSE THE WORLD WOULD NEVER SEE OUR ABUNDINCE OF TALENT

  • I went to pearl Theatre to see him... this song sounded better live

  • They always do. It's a Joel Plaskett signature.

  • joel is amazing i see him live a lot because im from halifax

he scrony though hope he donst have a eating disorter

  • Somewhat. He says he had it in mind when he was creating it, and an incident when he was a child where he fell asleep with the TV on. He woke up to a Twisted Sister music video and it was "The coolest thing ever".

  • In one song from his triple album, he says "a couch for three" and "sitting by the fire watching it burn"...perhaps a *wink wink* to this vid and the Happen Now video?

  • Cool story bro

  • these days in his concerts he does an acoustic version of this, it's really different

    but it's great!

  • Not exactly, but he certainly is one of the figureheads. Probably THE figurehead of East Coast music.

  • But he's still fucking amazing.

  • Every artist is so unique that I would say there is no figurehead because everything is just so great, there is Matt Mays, Two Hour Traffic, In-Flight Safety, Sloan and many others you cannot say he is the figure head, but he is very good.

  • I agree that there are many excellent east coast acts, but Sloan abandoned Halifax... and "We'll hold a grudge anyway ('cause it's fun.)"

Two Hours Traffic are protégés of Plaskett's, as well. I'd say Joel's right up there... arguably the figurehead, but certainly the most adept and eclectic songwriter.

  • My thoughts exactly!

  • well...except for the line "oh say can you see"

  • aha every morning kids stand for attention to true patriot love instead of o canada

  • So Joel Plaskett is tall and scrawny. haha!

  • I used to listen to this song on a mixed tape I made to listen to while gardening in the South of France. I'd just be bopping my head side to side, singing to myself in the chaparral forest, pulling weeds and cutting down trees. LA LA LA la LA.
