Anyone know what type of camera and underwater housing he was using? I love diving and now after 30 years I am just getting into the photography part. The pictures he has are simply to beautiful to describe.
Yes, that's what they do. I've had dozens of experiences with leopard seals, but from a kayak. They never threaten us but are curious. had one touch my elbow onced. They zoom around forever, looking up at us, bobbing their heads up for a better look, etc. They've been Hollywoodized to death so everyone thinks they're some sort of monster. They're perfectly safe to dive with as long as you move slowly and keep your face to them. They're quite beautiful, follow our kayaks around.
On leopard seal killed one human before, a scientist studying on a research base. She'd been diving, then was talking to friends in a zodiac as she was slowly treading water with her flippers. The leopard seal took her by the ankle and pulled her down, then released her. She was sadly out of air and drowned. All the scientists believed the leopard seal had mistaken her for a penguin. This is well documented. They are known for stalking humans as they walk above on thin ice but none have died.
Yes, of course they are and we treat them as such. I tell my kayakers to please, always remember wild animals can be unpredictable. That's why I always paddle in slowly first to assess their 'mood.' So far the one death is the only thing we know of down here that has gone terribly wrong. One is one too many. We use guarded discretion, as the scuba divers do. Now about paddling in waters with polar bears, that's another story! More on that later.
Exactly! It's not like they MEANT to harm that girl.. she was in HIS territory and any scientist/photographer understands those risks.. no matter what animal!
well, Antarctica kinda reminds everyone of Christmas, so the seal thought "hey, what the hell...it's better to give than to receive. Here buddy, have my lunch!" xD anyway nice story though :)
Good videé... I hate penguins they get to much attention som much movies about them and they actully smell very bad.... in the meaning of actual smell
umm......this isnt that hard to understand. they're not like sharks or orcas, they dont eat seals, in the since that most divers get attacked by sharks and orcas cuz they mistake the dive suit for a seal. so use the same logic for a leopard seal. since there so big and see a human in a dive suit, they think its probably a baby leopard seal. and since its female, alot of animals in the wild become surogate mothers to young that other animals of that species lost. this is understandable stuff.
This guy is a dirty liar, everyone knows that leopard seals are afraid of humans. That is probably a zoo trained animal or computer generated picture.
awsom but that is not normal but you all need to believe so next time you see a lepord seal just jump in with it. what bad could happen. NO GUYS NEVER DO THAT
hrmm... I'm thinking being a National Geographic photographer is sounding pretty good right now.

That's quite a bold statement, talking about a WILD ANIMAL like that. These animals have killed humans before.
