If you watch the series and understand it, you will notice that some of the characters stay in the present (during the flashes) while others move through time.

Constants are the ones who stay in the same time period and variables move through time, and their location (in time) varies, like a variable in an equation

I'm guessing that with this scene and when Daniel and the survivors were out at sea when the Island moved, this might result in him going back and forth from the past to present. This will result in trying to find Desmond in the past and not being unstuck in time. Or maybe Charlotte is his actual constant? We will have to wait and see when Season 5 comes. Just two-and-a-half more months till the season starts!

I think Dan has worked with Dhama maybe in the Orchid station moving things forward as he has moved things. Forgotten this because something went wrong and he forgot this and carrys on forgetting things because he was affected. The women could be someone who looks after him and could be someone present past or maybe...Future?

In this episode, Daniel said, "(your constant) had to be something you really really care about" it wasn't until later that Desmond asked "This constant, can it be a person?" My theory is that Desmond is Daniels constant because he represents the success of all the experiments on time travel that Daniel had been working so hard on.

Although, they do make quite a cute pair, don't they?

Maybe Faraday considered Des to be a good friend. 1996 Faraday made that note in his notebook because he just made contact with past des and knew his future self told des to find him. With that Faraday had already established a constant.
