DiStefano had one of the most beautiful voices. But, unlike long lasting tenors like Kraus, Pavarotti himself, Martinelli, and others, he couldn't master diafragm singing; so, he spoiled his voice prematurely. Fonseca, voice teacher of mine, told me once that DiStefano visited him for voice training, but that it was too late for him, because his voice was much deteriorated at that time. Fonseca claimed to have been a voice student under Antonio Paoli, a tenor who did master diafragm control.

Tutto viene stretto nella gola dai piani ai forti. Di Stefano canta così tutto. Seguirne l'esempio vuol dire rovinarsi la voce come fece lui... e senza possederne l'indiscutibile avvenenza vocale, la rara intelligenza interpretativa e la meritata fortuna può essere la sciagura totale.
