  • this song is beautiful <3

  • Beautiful

  • Amazing.

  • @atasteformusic indeed!

  • Don't know what is it about this song, but it is just so pure and satisfying to listen to

  • Yes

  • this is one of my big sisters favorite songs. it always reminds me of I dream of Jenni for some reason.

  • loving it

  • I got goose-bumps watching this! She is beautiful, her voice is beautiful and she was smiling at herself, which is also beautiful!

  • I didn't know until recently this was an accapella song, but it makes perfect sense in this form! While I like the DNA version, its nice to here the purity of her voice I definitely like this version better. :)

  • @thewordthatpierces I was brought here by ya lad.. Thank you so much for this version, i guess i'm just.. I'm just.. impressed by the purity of her voice, and I bet that this is the 1987 that you are talking about right? But anyway, she's also got impressed by DNA towards approaching the early 90's for the beats and club style electronica, and now i know how the 1990 version had came out. This is like history establishing links with the present where everything's changing. Thx lad :D

  • so why do you put 'piano' in the tags? berk.

  • @bonesstorage

she says the song was originally thought of as a piano piece. I asked one Eligarf, a piano player and a friend of mine here on YT, if he could put a music score for the song together... the tag item is a reference to that, let's call it, a project (that never came through).

  • Wadsworth Constant applies.

  • wow thanks for posting the Original. Human voice is such an amazing instrument

  • @jaker63744 It is! One of my friends would always say, its the ultimate instrument, and instruments can only try to emulate it. ;P

  • I can play this version on every single instrument used

  • Thank You

  • @darconner welcome!

  • it's a lovely way to make everyday life seem a bit mysterious, and a bit melancholy.

  • some women do a better job then most when it comes to commanding and demonstrating their sexual presence. Her look at the camera at 1:46 is a perfect example of this, kinda like the same look the lead singer of the Bangles gave in 'walk like an egyptian.' Other women should take note of this. Much like this song, sometimes the simple things go a long way!

  • Hahaha I like how at 1:46 she looks at the camera, almost as if to say "yeah yeah, you know you wanna hear doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo"

  • I like her dimples

  • @Hayleighbella dam....your right.....cute dimples ! :) peace and love !

  • Makes me want to cry, dont know why

  • @gabrisims

    I know what you mean.

  • So great, simple and great !!!! I feel it like a song very sad and about her loneliness

  • She seems so happy at the end, like it was a release of emotions. I just love her eyes.

  • Since she refers to the 1990 version, I can assume she did this presentation sometime a few years later, yes?

  • @Vebinz

that's right, it was some years ago but definitively in this century...

1987 is the year Solitude Standing, the album featuring the original version of Tom's Diner, was published.

  • she is such a badass

  • So cool.

  • hey Z, ironically this was on your channel's 'recent activity' after I referred to thiSweeTune in my bloloooz vid. but it said "not available on mobile" when I tried playing it! any chance you can change the settings or is that fixt by yt?

  • @TERb8

wasn't aware of it... should be available now, please check it out & let me know.

  • did. working fine now, thankQ!

  • I just learned that the a capella version of this song was instrumental (no pun intended) in the refinement of using the mpeg format for music. It wasn't deemed good enough until they could get her voice to sound right. Quite a song and part of a much bigger piece of music history!

  • @krivoniak

yes, Indeed, you got it right!

perhaps I should include these little bits in the text description..?

  • that's an interesting morseL. but IMfO, the commentSection can be considered a part of the viDescription. anybody really interested's gunna read both.

  • @TERb8

    agree completely!

  • @¢┳│°↑↘↑

  • @TERb8

that's one pretty looking comment ;)

  • says "ACTion"

  • @TERb8

thanks for the vid, much appreciated!

  • Suzanne will always be my object of desire.

  • Great song .... no to mention she is incredibly beautiful

  • A "midnight picnic" with Suzanne. The thought brings a smile.

  • i love this song either way (with or without music)

  • WOW! She is one of the best, Adorabel Cute, Nice song, Smart in way singing...Ta ta ta taa taa..WoOwOoW.... Does she know that there are still thousands of fans out here ?

  • Her dimples are adoreable! x

  • tip-top! great tune - even better in the context of the album

  • "...and of the midnight picnic once upon a time before the rain began. And I finish up my coffee and it's time to catch the train." I never heard this before just now. I always thought the song ended oddly. Now I know why. I think this is awesome; sound perfect as is or with a piano.

  • man, she was SO HOT

  • this is so beautiful! i love this original acapella... and when you wrote this you had no idea it would be such a hit...

  • I like it without music! :D

  • give me chills, I LOVE IT!

  • Heh, making me cry a little.

  • Her voice is so peaceful & adorable!

  • could I meet you? inded i am a newyorker and semi famous. let me konw please.

  • why doesnt she do the do do do? those are my favorite parts =P

  • @SomethingIngenious ...

she does the ta-ta ta-ra ta-ta ra-ra, towards the end, starting around 03:32

  • @SomethingIngenious umm cuz she just said this is the orginal version,

  • @SomethingIngenious Actually, she does do the doo-doo-doo, it's just shorter doo's, if that makes sense. ^.^;;

  • @SomethingIngenious this is because that's the DNA remix, the original is in acapella, no music at all but both are really good :)

  • sing better than susanne vega

  • @theporltugal

That's weird, she is Suzanne Vega.

  • A good job without music background, dancing, or any other back up in a video, good job.

  • @buzzlewie ... thank you, glad you appreciate it!

  • @theInterzone I really do, it is something that she didn't need music, back up, nothing in the background, dancing or insturments to me that's a real hit video.

  • Makes my eyes moist for some reason.

  • @onjoFilms

same here. the many years that have past since I heard it first make no difference.

  • NICE! :)

  • Ummm not to offend anyone here and I am probably gonna get flamed like hell for this but...THAT SONG SUCKED, the pauses are the worst it's like she forgot the words and had to look at a lyric sheet. I mean who cares and would someone give her a singing lesson that was not singing it was talking that was awful.

  • @sabian1hhx1only There's nothing wrong with not liking the song. :p It was an acquired thing for me. It was nostalgia that brought me back to listen to it again a few years ago, and after -really- listening and not just casually hearing it... I really enjoyed it. I find the simplicity of it beautiful, and I don't think it would have the same effect without the pauses or her style of singing. But that's just me...

  • You know from the MTV version, I think her voice has gotten better

  • Ive heard somewhere a long ago, that toms diner is the same restaurant that features in seinfeldt!! Anyone knows something about that?

If i ever come to NY I would definetely check out 112 and broadway, this song is epic!!

  • I've been trying to find this song for years. Absolutely love this song, brings back memories.

  • I heard The Vocal original in a McDonalds and it took me back. So I spent a month trying to find out who sang this song. I am so happy now. This is a beautiful sound. Im glad I was able to hear this song again. Its been on my youtube for three days already

  • @InoelFL

    .

Welcome! Glad to see that your search ended well, and that it ended here!

Talking about being taken aback, I remember walking into a supermarket some 20 odd years ago, and there was Space Oddity by David Bowie playing in the background, a proper song, not just some muzak rendering of it.

  • why NO closed captioned in this video

  • thanks for the tip! sounds like a good idea, I'll take a look at that option over the weekend.

  • this song has been copied twice once as said by HardLikeKimboSlice

Yo gotti standing in the kitchen

and then the second time was

    juice by drake.

  • #night ninja

there is a Felt song called Suzanne Vega that samples it

  • there is also a Felt song called Suzanne Vega which samples this song

  • When was this video recorded? And from what TV station? Thanks.

  • @roxcyn The clip is based on a 1987 edition of BBC show called Words and Music.

  • That's awesome! I love her voice, thanks for the information. Perhaps you could add it to the video description? Thanks!

  • @roxcyn Done! Thanks for the tip :)

  • better than DIDO!

  • i can't believe she is so pretty,

i wish i was older to date her

or she was younger to date me n.n

    i think im obsessed

  • dude this is back in da 80's

  • @Hamzah812 ohm ok she was pretty

no.. fuck it, she is pretty

thats why i said i wish she was younger

im not crazy to date an older woman

but i have to admit shes pretty or was whatever

  • nice one! i'm with you :)

  • Song starts at 1:23

  • i love you

  • This is taken from the BBC show 'Words and Music'. I don't know what the clips of people walking around while she was talking are there for, I'm fairly certain they weren't in the original show. The series was excellent, and featured many other artists doing acoustic versions of their signature songs.

  • i dont get why drake turned this into a rap song but either way this has got to be one of the catchiest tunes i have ever heard.

  • word up

  • i dont think drake ever did this. if so, whats the name of the song?

maybe your thinking of "yo gotti-standing in the kitchen"...?

  • that song is different. but good call it has the same tune also. thats 3 songs with this tune.

  • I checked out that drake song. you're right, same exact tune.

  • @nightninja25 4 songs with this tune. ever hear i get paper. technically its only 3 songs since i get paper is drakes song with a chorus.

  • she's beautiful and has an amazing voice!

  • I love this version... I didn't hear the other version until a few years ago... the original is so much better

  • The song we all know or just the lyrics alone... this will be a classic !

  • It is a Classic :-)

  • will be? buddy this was in late 80s/early 90s

  • oooh that shiver up the spine of a good tune

  • Wow, she's really very pretty.. I loved this song but to hear it raw really is something :)

  • Talk about flashbacks...Am I that old? That's a rhetorical question no need to answer. LOL Thanks for the vid! = )

  • Lol,u are so funny.

  • Wow, I recently found myself singing this song, especially the "tututuru..." thanks a lot mister...

  • you're very welcome!

    glad you like it!

  • shes awsome.

  • wow! i knew the dane version as a teenager...to hear it in its original form makes me say wow..her and the dance guys was like geniuses working together...it really sounds french to me..she got her intention across

  • she's such a cool person

  • I'm 16.

I wasn't born yet when this came out.

    This song sounds so familiar.

But anyway for the past few days I've been obsessed with this song.

I swear it will be the death of me.

This song is mind blowing. Anyway

What year was this video made?

  • This particular video clip was made by me some 3 years ago.

The material comes from a BBC program - I don't anymore remember which one - that was broadcast sometimes around the time you was born, or even before that... ;)

  • thanks for the info.

Now I feel super young. LOL.

  • may you stay forever super young! :)

  • O.K song 50%50%

  • I used to sing my kids to sleep at night with this song. So it remains dear to me still. (They are now in their mid teens!)

  • She couldnt sing but she made a helluva song! I still love it!

I used to sing it to my kids also. LOL!!

  • i love it asome song

  • She is so incredibly beautiful in this video...

  • Absolutely agree!!!

  • you're welcome!

  • Hi Suz,,,very good!! A VERY TIMELESS TUNE!! I hear it on the radio most of the time,,but not often enuff!! Great mix!! I hope you are still doing music!!??I have to say it,,,you kinda make think of Ally MCBeal...? but way better,,,!!If you are still doing tunes,,,PUT IT OUT GIRL!!! You got it!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!

  • Thank you ;)

  • ye,it's very nice song, when she was still young

  • she's a forever young kind of person ;)

  • That is a very good song. And I like how she thought it was cool and original that DNA made it into a dance mix.

  • Tom's restraunt is the place they show on Seinfeld (the out side of the diner they show, not the inside) the place they always eat at.

  • Thank you! It's a nice, interesting bit.

  • i wonder what ever happend to suzanne vega

  • Check out my version to this Song.....

  • I love this song!!! I could remember what it was called or who it was that sang it!! All Iknew was that it was a song off the "Untamed heart" with Christian Slater, in 1993...

  • i never knew the story behind this song. she's a very thoughtful and sensitive artist which i love...

  • In my opinion this is the best version. She has a beautiful shy voice.

  • Great song!

  • TOM'S DNA

  • this is a pleasant song.

  • simply brilliant!

  • this would be great to listen to while drinking coffee in a diner...

  • im still in love with her for this

  • she has such a calm voice

  • Wow! This is great!

It's too bad they left out the last verse in the DNA version. (Or maybe I'm mistaken?)

  • Don't know about the DNA version, never heard it all the way through. It is indeed a pity if they left it out...

  • They didn't leave the last verse out. She sounds kind of pissed off about the sucess of the DNA version. No offence meant to her but I think the DNA version is a better song. IMO. Tom's Restaurant is also Monk's Cafe in Seinfeld.

  • Yes, it kinda enchances the original version. Makes it sound more tasteful. But it's cool to hear the original too.

btw, I was browsing through other versions on Youtube and came across one called Tom's Dinner Mellowmix (or something along those lines) and I think it's pretty good. My favourite for now.)

  • Yes, this song has been remixed to death - literally, in some cases. Yet I still want to ask you to take a listen to my lovely, gentle, melodic pop mix. I think that it manages to retain the quirky and somewhat melancholy feel of the acapella version, whilst sounding more like a pop song. Check it out for yourself, just look for my Matt Mix. Matt Pop.

  • so, why not publish it here as a video response to this one...?

  • It's done!

  • thank you!

  • damm i just thought ....i don't play piano either !!
