i completely disagree. I think this is one of the most successful productions that i have seen on broadway, and it goes along with sondheims original idea of the show. It was conceived as a 9 person off-broadway intimate show. From that it was turned into something extravagent.
The revival didn't work because "Sweeney Todd" is not only a musical that pulls heavily from its time period, but one uses that historical reference to highlight its macabre oddity. Shoving all of the violence and morbid details in the audience's face doesn't make it nearly as strange, but makes it ostentatious. And a bit pretentious.
John Doyle's Sweeney Todd Rival was AMAZING- it was meant for people who bother understand and know the show and do not need huge set changes to follow the story. The talent of the cast being their own Orch. was amazing and what I loved most about the show- it was a perfect abstact revival....
FYI the original production when a killing took place a huge arch of blood was "sprayed" across the stage/ barber shop. If you think this production was more "violent" I think you need to have yourself check out by a Neurosurgeon
Brilliant version of the show. Real Brechtian style! I loved the original-- but why do it the same way in a revival? Saw this live and it really worked! It is a dark show-- Broadway doesn't have to be pink flashing lights!
it's funny, that's exactly what i like about it. it gives broadway a bit of much needed diversity. not everything has to be *kick-turn-one-two-three* we should broaden our idea of what broadway is. i suspect this is why a lot of good musicals and plays can't get into the big theatres.
Someone explain what those items she is cleaning are?? What exactly are they ... wrenches ...??? and what the hell does it all symbolise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also I love how Patti makes those lines at the end so sexy ("give us a kiss....") - brilliant
Such contrast between this and the 1982 Video version eh?
Great to have different versions for variety. I love this production.
Those things are for cutting or whatever the bodeies of Sweeney's "customers" , because you just can't put a whole human into the meat grinder , I think (;
Michael & Patty are fantastic, but i prefer David & Judy. probably because i saw them live. great recording, the quality is much higher than the rest of junk on youtube
"C'mon dear, give us a kiss. (makes kissy-face) ...Mr.T, you love me just a little bit, don't you?" "Yes, of course..." That's such a good line. Patti LuPone-Lovett rocks!
She is not the WORST Mrs Lovett. Most people consider her one of the best!
I agree she can be very unappealing in this role, her ill fitting black costumes, bob haircut and lower, more brutish voice are different than Helena Bonham Carter or Angela Lansbury's versions but certainly not the worst version.
I love her here, but I love all the Lovetts in the major adaptations.
The movie version has to be my favorite because of her high vocals and gorgeous costumes/hair/makeup
@Animeartist124 I actually think Patti brought a level of fierce, but subtle sexuality to Mrs. Lovett, one that had never been addressed before, because she'd always been played as a cockney, lower-class fishwife-type. Here, due to the storyteller theatre concept, there's a new take on the characters. And Patti's was out of the world. Such a brilliant performance. She's sexy, ghoulish, and quirky all at once.
And I loved the little padding they put on her butt. Heh.
how the fuck did he come up with the mrs lovett design

@LaCageAuxGypsy in the DVD remake yes it is just a little blood in the razor but in the original stage show blood was sprayed across the stage

I like LuPones vocals and like actual acting.
I just dislike her look.
And the revival as a whole.
Its just too dark and not very broadway in my opinion.
I loved LuPone in the Concert version.
That was awesome

She's cleaning torturous looking tools like pliers and industrial screw drivers, and hacksaws for example
I'm guessing it's just supposed to be a STARK contrast from her very primitive romantic desires

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This version was total garbage. Everything from casting to directing.
Patti Lupone is perhaps the most over rated stage actress there is. She is the worst Mrs. Lovett in any major production hands down.
CynicalSavior 3 years ago
I think the revival did amazing things with this show, and Patti Lupone was very good for the part.

@BroadwayBenFOSHO why all the laughing? also the woman who plays ms. lovett needs vocal work.

Why do they change Mr. Pirelli to Ms. Pirelli
MikeyandTarynshow 3 years ago
The gender of that character doesn't really matter.
Fiyero918 3 years ago 3
besides, it was also a casting choice. its really hard to find a guy with that vocal energy.

How do you think Patti kept from laughing at herself when she was doing all the random stuff she did in By the Sea?
CharHope 3 years ago 4
i know i didnt get that why is she cleaning random metal tools?? the fush and seagull thing she did was so funny
tatyrules12 3 years ago 2
She's cleaning metal tools because she's just spent all day cutting up human bodies and baking them into pies. That's their "respectable business."

they also cut out some of the chorus parts during God Thats Good so that the entire company could perform it.
