Having driven farm trucks and smaller stick shift cars for years myself, you shouldn't coast with a heavy truck, but a smaller car it's preferable. As far as needing to re-engage the transmission for an unexpected problem when coasting--if you can't pop it back into the appropriate gear in a fraction of a second, you should keep your tookus in an automatic.

When slowing down you should leave it in whatever gear you were in until the rpms get down to about 1000 then go down 2 or three gears then slowly release clutch pedal then right before completely stopping push in clutch.

Once you put an automatic transmission car into D, it is always in gear. Driving a stick shift, you should also be in a gear and downshifting when slowing down. Never ever cruise in Neutral.

I always heard it was really unsafe to "coast" to a stop while you're in traffic. Whenever you take a car out of gear while you're near other cars or people or anything else, you lose your ability to maneuver the vehicle. Is that not safe?
@masterexploder83 yes it is not safe because if you have to move your vehicle it is always quicker to just let go of the clutch instead of putting it back in gear ... you can still take it out of gear if you feel it is a safe time to do it just use your head and be smart and watch for any cars moving around you or people and you should be fine
this is not true. when driving on slippery road it is adwised to rather use the brakes than the engine for slowing down. This is because the ABS will help you more when using the brakes, than the ESP will help you when using the engine. Also it easier to controll the amount of brakingforce used when braking with brakes, than the engine.

I match revs when I down shift, sometimes I do it seamlessly but sometimes it didnt match so well and the car jerks a little bit. Does anyone out there knows engine break is overall bad for the engine or clutch? I dont want to replace the clutch of my car after 30k

Once you put an automatic transmission car into D, it is always in gear. Driving a stick shift, you should also be in a gear and downshifting when slowing down. Never ever cruise in Neutral.

right thing to do is....when u are slowing down you shift down from 3th geer to 2th geer and u dont touch the brake and car is stoping by itsself and then the same in first geer... point is car

I always heard it was really unsafe to "coast" to a stop while you're in traffic. Whenever you take a car out of gear while you're near other cars or people or anything else, you lose your ability to maneuver the vehicle. Is that not safe?

@masterexploder83 yes it is not safe because if you have to move your vehicle it is always quicker to just let go of the clutch instead of putting it back in gear ... you can still take it out of gear if you feel it is a safe time to do it just use your head and be smart and watch for any cars moving around you or people and you should be fine

this is not true. when driving on slippery road it is adwised to rather use the brakes than the engine for slowing down. This is because the ABS will help you more when using the brakes, than the ESP will help you when using the engine. Also it easier to controll the amount of brakingforce used when braking with brakes, than the engine.

this bitch know nothing, leaving the car in neutral when slowing down, ESPECIALLY through corners decreases your cars ability to maintain traction. the attitude of a car coasting in neutral is completely different to one which is in gear. Oh well, if she wants to crash her Ferrari that's fair enough, its the poor bastard in front of her that cops it.
