There's a couple of parts I like the way the Beaux Arts Trio did a bit better, although it is a bit slower, but I like it that way. Mostly the piano part at 4:26 I like to be legato, but I'm just starting to explore different interpretations. The BAT version I'm used to is about 13:43.
That is why one should never ever listen to composers! musicians are much better interpreters of music than composers of their own music. Stravinsky conducting Stravinsky is a horror too!
Composers are just 'portals' for music to become reality. These portals are not perfect though. I think musicians should try and go through the portal, beyond what the composer wrote and search for the true music. Bla bla, pardon my english, I am not a native.
Maybe my conception of music (and art for that matter) is too platonic. But to make a long story short, I prefer this piece played at a much faster tempo.
I totally agree with you, but in this case the fact that we find it slow is only because we are influenced by other performances and what we usually hear. a metronome marking is usually how the composer perceived the piece. it's not how he would interpret it, but just at what tempo he felt it needed to be played.
To be honest, I'm not quite sure what I'd do with his metronome markings. Shostakovich once said his metronome at home was broken, implying that his marking don't matter so much:)

i don't think it's too slow, it sounds tasteful enough in this tempo. however, the trio is in C minor, not C major!

it is actually a tad faster than Shostakovich's metronome indications.
