  • Thank you!

  • im 14 and doing my Creative Writing exam and my teacher said its A* Work and i should get it published what would you say ?

  • @ArTiziesWorld Teachers like to be kind, you have to understand that English is generally the easiest subject on the curriculum, and creative writing is the easiest branch of English. HOWEVER, you have the biggest difficulty of fiction writing out of the way, an actual plot? Is your plot original? Do you read it and think that it's something you would buy and stay up all night reading? Expand, edit, rewrite, expand, edit, give it to those you trust to read. Edit, re-wright. Good luck.

  • @Seb7795 Thankyou ive done the eam hopefully passed But thankyou anyway :)

  • @ArTiziesWorld Hope you do well.

  • I would probably be offended if somebody I didn't know wrote something in their notebook about me.

  • Blatant plug: morguloth.blogspot.com

  • this video inspired me

  • I learned a lot and waiting to learn more! Thank you and thank God I searched this!

  • Very cool.

  • I also take ideas from here and there and recently I started thinking... oh wait if I send it into a publisher and it's similar they won't take. But I really just took the core element from Avatar - The Last Airbender. People in my book have power over the elements and the main character is also the chosen one and has to save everybody but that's the only thing really... so this won't be a problem won't it? (regarding copyright.. =S)

  • V, good! Keep it up!! V. Inspiring!!!

  • And mines like harry potter - i've twisted it and the real story is nothing like it, but the main character (a boy) learns magic is real and has to go to a different world where he learns the ways of the Aveos (baisically wizards) But it's not in a boarding school, it's a community village. I've twisted it but I'm soooo worried about people judging my book straight away - fear's the only thing holding me back from writing and it actually gives me writers block - it's so annoying:|

  • OHMY GOD - HARRY POTTER IN THE BOOKSHELVE!

Thank you so much - this is really helpful!:)

  • Seriulsy i think this video is the best out there, thank u soooooooo much for uploading this,

  • Btw i really appreciate, you for telling us all why having a inspiration is so awesome. i just red a bok by bram stoker "dracula" to be honest i think this could make me a reader. Thanks for the video

  • hahahahaahahah, i do this in other subjects hahah very nice money making business xD

  • Sub me for the upcoming Woods Show, which will serve as a platform to exchange ideas in regards to stories. If you sub me as a fellow writer, I will promote your channel at some point on the show.

    Cheers

  • What books has this guy written?

  • great movie 'Stand By Me'

  • Never copy another person's idea and change it, it's extremely annoying.

  • @GreenMindist In a certain way, you're wrong, because inspiration (if you accept the idea that it has nothing divine) does not come out ot nowhere. Stylistic imitation is a honorable way to start S.King said ; it can trigger something in your mind, associations of ideas that drive you to something personal you can write about. Inspiration comes from outside. You may want to start with some idea you like in some movie or novel, but the most important thing is that you reappropriate that one idea.

  • @GreenMindist And just one last thing, we all have influences, it's not a shame. Even S.Kubrick had his very own masters. Let's not fool ourselves and stop being deceptive.

  • @GreenMindist I thought there was nothing new or original per se, since none of us human beings are new or original in that everything has been done before - all that is new is the point of view or angle. Perhaps I was wrong. But I don't think so. At least I'm pretty sure the thought I'm expressing isn't new, so I must be copying someone and changing it to fit my perspective. lol

  • I usually get fed up of these writers I've never heard of telling me how to write, so I went out and got hold of and read this guy's book "Ostrich Boys". Wow! What a fantastic book! And now I can say I'm very happy to take advice from someone who's definitely impressed me with their own writing. He knows what he's talking about.

  • Really Clever guy

Thanks this was very helpful :)

  • I liked this video. I'll continue the series. Thanks for uploading this.

  • After reading an old worn copy of Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, I often wonder while reading or writing if I'm losing a piece of my personal identity.

  • thanks for making this Inspirational video :)

  • thanks for making this Inspirational video

  • This guys writing is for the birds.

  • can u give me copies of your stories? or how much would they cost?

  • @wildcard126 You can get info on all of Keith's books, along with links to buy them, on the Scottish Book Trust website - scottishbooktrust [dot] com [slash] contacts [slash] keith-gray

  • Hi there Keith. I haven't got a clue whether you will read this but I remember you when you was an egg (in a writing sense) Six Bullets and all :) It's Paul, the quitter here, still scribbling occasionally but dreams more ethereal as ever. Nice to see your face again after all these years, it takes me back, and that's a blessing. I can see you have done extremely well for yourself and I can't be any more pleased.

  • Want your writing published online - free? Become a writer at theenglishwebsite.co.nr and join the team.

  • the website CHAINWRITE allows you to write stories with friends switching off paragraph by paragraph

  • @Horrorfan309 Honey, if you want to consider yourself a good writer you can start with actually using proper grammar. You wrote, "...and have wrote 24 novels." It would be proper grammar if you would have written, "and have written 24 novels." :P

  • How do you get your finch to sit on that lamp?

  • nice. thanks! :)

  • It is so nice to hear you talking, you describe myself, and my childhood. I am 25, and I´ve been writing since I can remember. (not in english, so excuse typing mistakes)

I wrote a couple of short stories, tons of notebooks, and two novels so far.

And so funny, I also always dreamt about being a rockstar, so I wrote a story about it.

Didnt try to publish anything yet, though. Probably someday

Like to hear a lot more from you.

    Greetings from Germany

  • great vedio...big respect...

  • We've found a writer on YouTube that is writing chronicles of his stories called "The Legend of Pratzimi" He is a great writer!

  • Hi Keith grate!

  • @ storyjoin Checked out you site STORYJOIN and loved it.

  • I'm not much of a story writer but do enjoy to read. I had an idea to write a story but couldn't finish it, so I started a webstie called STORYJOIN It allows you to create stories with other members. You start a story and others finish it for you, it's fun to see how the story ends.

  • Really enjoyed this video. Can't wait to watch the next one. Thanks a lot for doing this.

  • Nice. Hey, my channel has many free lessons in writing, from plotting, to show and tell, to creating suspense. Just click my nick, and then browse my playlist. People say they've learned more from my videos than they ever did taking writing courses. That makes me feel good.

Feel free to post a video response of one of your videos.

  • A person can only write about what they know and I personally only write from the perspective of myself. All the stories I write are about my own experiences, though some I've altered. I have yet to create a fictional character completely unlike me. How can I do this when I only see the world through my eyes? Maybe I'm not creative enough I guess.

  • @ madmethod21: I used to be the same way but then I realized that I was good at putting myself in other people's shoes. I often served as liaison b/c of this both in the work environment & in my personal life. If you are capable of understanding another's perspective "seeing it from their pov" then you can create a fictional character. Most my characters are a collaboration of diff. people. I usually keep a "diary" for each character & see how they react to diff. situations.

  • @ madmethod21: And don't forget you have more than just one side to you. You react different ways depending on your emotions. If you decide you want to create a very paranoid character then I'm sure you can "tap into" those instances you yourself felt paranoid about something & that should help you in developing your fictional character. It's also good to pay attention to the paranoid tendencies of others to see how they react & then you choose the character's reaction based on your objective.

  • Thanks Kieth for doing this video. It's got some really good information for writers out there. It's true what you say about inspiration. My advice to people is if you want to write read!

  • The Stand by Stephan King is my favorite. Really inspiring.

  • I want to be a writer fairly young, but it's incredibly hard! Thanks very much for this, I've already written a novel, but I plan to write another.

  • Hi there,

I'm trying to get into film but screen writing is my biggest worry. I'm so clad there are writing courses like this online. It's a great resource.

  • This was really interesting and I shall be taking a little notebook with me wherever I go from now on. I am an aspiring writer, so I shall be taking your advice very seriously :)

Even my partner got sucked into watching this video and he's a graphic designer, not a writer!

  • There's nothing wrong with getting ideas from other people's work, but there's a better way. Take a look at a program called Writers Block - Goodbye by Promptoria to draw endless new ideas from your own mind. There's a demo you can download for free.

  • I travel a lot on the train. This is where I do a lot of my hard writing and where I often meet up with characters I can add to my fiction. I just have a pen and notepad. When I get home it goes from my notepad to my computer and it is somewhat smoothed out. I too have a pet bird (singular in my case).

  • I thought Ray Bradsbury was a good choice. He is one of my favourites. I thought his short story The Fireman was wonderful. The novel and the movie weren't bad. If I was making a list I would throw in Robert. E, Howard and Terry Pratchett (why does writing have to be all serious doom and gloom anyway?) I grew up on Marvel Comics and Star Trek paperbacks.

  • Excellent video!

  • I'm going to be taking a creative writing course soon :)

I'm glad that writing has never been an occupation. Its the one thing that the government can't bore you to tears in working everyday for the man.

  • How can one improve their writing? I would like to write my own screenplays but i`m having a bit difficulty with English. English is my second language, and It is not as strong as I would like to be. I have no trouble having conversations with others or writing short responses to people in form of emails, comments, etc, but i`m having trouble when it comes to writing something creative. I always lack words when i`m trying to describe action. What is the best way to improve my English writing?

  • Try reading other English novels and see how the authors use language to narrate the story. =) It helps broaden your vocabulary and improve your grammar when writing. When I first started out, I had no idea how to use commas. (And English is my first language *rolls eyes*). So I read a book which I thoroughly enjoyed and noted how they used the commas.

  • Or, better yet, study some plays.

  • in no order my favourite books have got to be -birdsong by sebasien Faulks -englebey also by seb Faulks -1984 George Orwell Catcher in the Rhye -Hobbit - all Lord of rings

  • id love to be a writer one day, it seems like a nice life to have, but my writing skill and experience are a little lacking.

  • same here....

  • I meet him he came to my skool:)

  • i'm recently in creative writing class and the advice you have given is quite useful.

i like the inspirations you chosen but i would like to share mine:

    2 books:

    Holes

The Catcher In The Rye (kind of cliche i know)

    1 movie:

    clerks

  • The Catcher In The Rye is probably my favorite book.

  • Excellent novel.

  • @BassGeekJack best book i've ever come across so far. <3 <3 <3 amazing writing.

  • Here's a great site to help with your writing. I don't like spamming it's just this site is really helpful

Here's my portfolio, see what you think, it's free to join.

  • great advice thanks.

  • thank you. and i like your birds...

  • I enjoyed the first of this series and I am looking forward to viewing the rest.

  • The idea of being and writing with the birds, or in any company of animals, is a genius idea for writers.

  • or in a garden!

  • Yeah thats such a good idea too! Nature really can inspire and calm you. I like to write with my 2 cats. :)

  • Quite useful. Thank you.

  • Some great advice. I love how you work with two birds close to you.

  • That way, when someone asks "How'd you think of that?" he can tell them, "A little bird told me." hehe
