Long before Communist Party of China moved into the area, the whole big area belonged to China, Republic of China, Qing, etc. During Qing and Republic of China era, China was weak, some areas in Xinjiang revolted with Soviet help. Later, CCP took back the area but large area fell into the hand of Soviet, now Russia. China lost one fourth of its land to Soviet, Russia and Mongolia. 3 quarters left! Sad!

I have seen much better Xinjiang dancers. The Uyghurs and Uzbeks have a similar language and can understand each other at a basic level. The ones that I have known have all been good people.

Currenty, the population of Han Chinese is large than Uyghur. Han Chinese made more contribution to the area than any other. I really don't know what make Uyghur think they have the rights to be independent.
