Yeah, Genesis shits all over SNES in terms of run and gun games, in both quantity and quality.
Genesis has Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier (Japan and Europe only), Contra: Hard Corps (better than Contra III, imo), the better version of Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Vectorman 2, Assault Suit Leynos, and Ranger X.
SNES only had Contra III: The Alien Wars, the inferior version of Earthworm Jim, Assault Suits Valken, Metal Warriors, and Front Mission: Gun Hazard (Japan only).
It simply boils down to this: If you like mario, RPG's like chrono trigger and secret of mana and tales of phantasia then you'll prefer the SNES.
If you like Sonic the hedgehog, SHUMP games like truxton, and thunderforce the you'll prefer the megadrive.
Me ? I'm more of a RPG man myself and before you all call me biased i have both systems and i like both but I prefer SNES purely because there are alot of classic RPG's on there
The weaker and CHEAPER system always wins in sales. At first the once cheaper genesis was winning agaisnt SNES until the 32x and CD came out and made the system expensive. The SNES won over the more powerful but expensive NEO GEO. It continues to this day with the weaker Wii and DS winning against the more powerful compitetion.
@SPS148669 idk about that today , last gen ps2 was more expensive than a gamecube but sold much more and now most people have a ps3 or x-box over nintendos cheaper systems.
it's kind of funny sega could have pulled the noe geo stunt and they kinda did. i remeber them comercials sega and snes where like weeners an the noe the full monhty the full hotdogg with sause salami everything you could wish for,at the same time who could eat that hotdog everyday? not the average.neo geo set the smartest move and made it the dumbest at the same time, what made them go bankrupt?.
alienn wars is a great game but gunstar walks all over that maybe because it's so damn busy, and for metal slug,i owned a neo but i sold it due to the ridiculous prices for them cartridges some even reach up to prices of new led or 3d tv's.who wan't to pay 300+ dollars for shooting or fighting games(that looks super)? i think i playability snes and genesis win this one.and btw cram a 64 meg into a genesis it could suprise also.
Responding to ioport I wasn't just comparing the looks but the overall game which includes gameplay of the different systems. It seems you have missed the point of these comparisons or you have the same mentality of alot of gamers where it's all about te grapixorz1111herpderp.
In terms of GFX, Metal Slug rules supreme, with that insanely smooth animation and level of detail.
But it was amazing just how "busy" Gunstar Heroes' first level looked. I mean, explosions all over the place.
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Contra 3 ever since that level with you hanging off missiles WHILE THEY WERE BEING FIRED towards the boss. I just laughed at the utterly over the top absurdity and thought it was the greatest thing ever.
The SNES and Mega Drive actually had pretty dated tech when they hit the market compared to what existed at the time. But as always, a console can't be too expensive. And during that time, consoles used to cost around $200 when they came out. And the Neo Geo was $600 with games for $200 and up. So it's no surprise the Neo Geo looks better really :P
@generacion1982 my definition of the term console: connect a system to power and to a tv, insert game, turn on+play. And by that definition the Neo Geo is a console. the Mega Drive holds very similar hardware with the same cpu-duo (also based on arcade hardware), only less powerful and with less effects. many people (especially snes fanboys) do not want to admit the fact that the NG is a regular console hardware because they could not or did not want to afford it. NG is also older than the snes.
@godoftakedown but anyone can say also that many ppl do not want to admit this is an arcade board just because they've "consolized" it
just look at the games, the costs, the hardware numbers, no matter how you disguise this is an arcade board more likely cps- power or other sega/namco boards to be fair... the only difference is that nintendo/sega opted to do a more economic home console instead of consolized a board, with a different catalogue
Pretty unfair as metal Slug came out years after the others (though the hardware didn't so fair enough). Mega drive also has Contra hard Corps, which to me was even more insane and faster than Alien wars.
Yeah i could of used that but i was going for the best and most well known games on each respective console Cyber-Lip doesnt fall into either of those criteria.
@gagaman Contra Hard Corps, IMO, is the best Run n Gun game EVER.
Sega had the best beat-em-ups with Streets of Rage, as well as Shooters and sports titles. SNES won out in RPG's. Neo Geo had insane graphics and sound.

@Namriu94 Ummm if you add the total amount of ps3's and Xbox 360's combined, they still don't add up to the amount of wii's sold.

@SPS148669 Funny that, over in Europe the Master System was a good bit more popular than the NES.
Partly due to how badly the NES was handled over here.

This is fucking pointless. No shit one is going to look better when its hardware is at least twice as powerful. What's next, Wii vs Xbox 360?

Contra has some of the coolest mode 7 effect seen on the snes back in the days.

You should have Contra: Hard Corps on MegaDrive side. It's the best Contra game ever.

Amazing to think that hardware out at the same time as the Mega drive and Super nes can do them sort of graphics

that's right, neo geo is an arcade board you should compare it technically with CPS, System16 and other arcade boards NOT home consoles.

Yeah i realised that Metal Slug did come out awhile after the others but as you said it was still the same hardware that came out in 1990.

Eh, Cyber-Lip would have been a better choice since it came out a few months after the Neo Geo launch.
