@rdnlso If you like this version then perhaps you need to visit the performance of Michael Ponti - in his Romantic Revival Series he is really superb when playing this forgotten concerto; alas I do not consider that Firkusny is that great in his playing of this one, perhaps because he seemed to always just play it...
for me, this is the most immediately arresting bit of this concerto.

I wish you had posted the earlier recording, with Kondrashin (or was it Sanderling?). I hear it was much better than this later one.
