It's all conjecture since the show doesnt really get into it (not relevent to the story)...but she's definately mulatto in the way that a lot of Brazilians in the favela are mixed.

Regardless, she's a wonderful character:P Love that show.

I hate how underrated this show is it's so good & it's very rare because most anime have main charcter that's either japanese or european or they just look caucasian in general it's so rare to find a badass main character in a good story who's a woman and doesn't turn useless or helpless & dark skinned without being a stereotype but not just that the story makes you want to know what will happen next after each episode I recommend this to people who love action anime x3

to me there is a cobination of culture in this anime. south and central american, also japanese.Its a lil bit of everybody which is beautiful! it's not a real time and place.She has almond shaped eyes and there are black women with hair thats not kinky. she's just a modern woman..i think she's a beautiful character and the people sayin dumb stuff are obviously ignorant and need to do some damn research before the start insinuating.

This anime is Brazil inspired. Here in Brazil we are the most : Caucasian/Black/Japanese. It's just like rucial said. There's a lot of people like michiko, they are: japanese+indian so they get straight black hair and asian eyes, plus dark skin tone. Well, I'm half Chinese, half indian. Lol it's a mix here in brazil.

The story takes place in Republica dominica. Well you can see it on their false passeport. But maybe it's a melting pot of south amerca's country!^^ More important, I don't understand why all caracters have japanese name...???^^ However one of my favourite anime. Great job by Manglob as in Samouraï champloo. And I think it's not very often that you can see a non-white first caracter in a japanese anime...

There are Blacks in South and Central America and all over the world. I think its stupid when people say Black as if only African-Americans are Black. Slave boats from Africa reached not only the shores of the USA but also the rest of the Americas and Europe too. As for Michiko, I've read the setting of the anime is Brazil (or Brazil inspired) so seeing how dark her skin and other features, its not so far-fetched to assume that her character represents a Black native of Brazil or Latin America.
