This film is my favorite 007 film and it is wrongly accused of being the worst. Think about it, if Connery didn't return then John Gavin would play Bond which would have been diabolical. If Bond believed he killed Blofeld in the pre-title sequence then obviously MI6 would give him another assignment. You are NOT supposed to take this movie seriously as all the Bond films released in the 70's had a small comedic effect to them.
I have no idea why they decided to make Blofeld so dumb in this movie. The very idea of him constantly getting plastic surgery to hide is okay...but it immediately doesn't work when he decides to wear the same suit and stroke a white cat.
The guy behind the microphone is really commited. "Two minutes and counting to all-killing destruction." "one minute and counting." "5, 4, 3, 2,.... tell my mother I love her... 1".
When things started blowing up, did the guy doing the countdown ever think "Wow, I better get out of here!!!"?
@tinavjohn Confusingly, that's called "007 Theme", as opposed to the famous "James Bond Theme". It's used in a number of the Bond pictures when they want some old-school feel.
If I was Bloefeld, I would have had the disengage button in my submarine escape pod, because I wouldn't have trusted the "Stupid idiots" to know which button to push XD.
Why didn't Bond just take the gun and shoot Blofeld? After what he did to Tracy a Blofeld filled with bullets like Sonny ends up in The Godfather would have been extremely satisfying.
@bladerunner951 What I would have done if I were Bond was after the smokestack business I'd have went to the bottom of it with the PPK and put a few in him to make sure and then in Godfather-esque fashion cut off his head and mail it to the next of kin. It worked with the horse. Why not Blofeld?
i must admit i did like charles gray as blofeld but i prefered donald pleasance because he says on bonds smoking, ''Its not the nicotine thats going to kill you''. otherwise good film
@datsome80 None of them were nearly as good as the first two guys that did Blofeld in From Russia with Love and Thunderball. Pleasance's performance just didn't strike me as true to the spirit of the character. He wasn't nearly cold enough. And the guy who plays him in Diamons are Forever just doesn't really have any personality compared to the other two.
@cheezemonkeyeater wasn't the voice of Blofeld done by Joseph Wiseman, the villian from DR No, i know he did one voice over of blofeld but im not sure which. You make a good opinion
@datsome80 He was played by Anthony Dawson and voiced by Erik Pohlman. I mean, if you watch the scene in Thunderball, when Blofeld kills the traitor, you get the sense of his coldness. He doesn't get hot angry; he remains cool and composed, but he nonetheless kills the man who was embezzling his money. After Blofeld kills the woman in You Only Live Twice, he screams at the other guy. It really took me out of the movie. Also, Sean Connery cannot be made to look Japanese. He just can't.
@LiquidSolidRaiden He did. Remember, Blofeld received plastic surgery in the beginning. They made him looke like Charles Gray, who was killed in "You Only Live Twice".
@jksonny No. He survived to For Your Eyes Only, by then wheelchair bound as a result of this incident shown and then Bond dropped him down a smokestack from a helicopter he commandeered.
Blofeld was originally going to be the villain of "The Spy Who Loved Me", but they had to replace him with Karl Stromberg due to Kevin McClory claiming rights to all references to Blofeld and SPECTRE! Sucks, right? But At least Blofeld appears in "For Your Eyes Only" and "Never Say Never Again". But still, wouldn't it have been awesome to see Blofeld on the Atlantis? It would've been the perfect lair for him!
I agree. It's too bad that Blofeld had to be dropped from TSWLM; especially since his role in DAF, IMO, is such a terrible disappointment.
I understand McClory's issues but he's made a career out of being a pest. The producers even dropped any direct reference to Blofeld in FYEO out of fear McClory would cause more problems. What a pain.

As a series, the James Bond films are TERRIBLE. No proper chronology, not true to the books, everything is out of order. How can Bond casually talk undercover to Blofeld in OHMSS if in YOLT they fought and know what they look like? Any given James Bond film in itself however can be very good. But as a series, it's absolutely horrendous. Laughable even.
It takes me a lot to want to see DAF though. This film is pretty bad as a Bond movie. Tiffany is a joke. Blofeld is, well, we all know.
Yes, but it's CHARLES GRAY! And you get two or three of him in this one, with its daft plastic surgery plot which belongs in the hokey Avengers series. Diamonds are Forever is bloody rubbish!
After Blofeld says "Damn you," he's not seen again. So he presumably died in the explosion; hence, he died in this movie. Why was he brought back in "For Your Eyes Only"?
He isn't seen again for 10 years so you could assume that. However, it transpires he is in a wheelchair in FYEO so you can assume he survived the destruction of the oild rig with serious injuries and decided to lay low for several years and then go after Bond when he least expected it. I believe his remains were found when a power station chimney was demolished.
James Bond also visits the grave of his dead wife Tracy, so that's a further hint it's actually Blofeld in the wheelchair.
Technically it wasn't Blofeld who shot Tracy however. Don't know if Bond ever got his revenge on Irma Bunt. Other spectre henchwomen got what they deserved like Fiona Volpe.
We often wonder if Bunt had been eliminated, as she is never seen again, but she was acting on Blofeld's orders so Bond would be more interested in him.
'grave of his dead wife' - don't you just mean 'grave of his wife'? Sally Hibbin used the same statement as you in her James Bond movie book published to coincide with the movie series' 25th anniversary, and the text has always bothered me. I lie there contemplating the line on cold, empty, lonely winter nights....
Such as being machine-gunned by Irma Bunt. We didn't see Bond going after that bastard woman, did we? Maybe he did for her prior to DAF. Would he have strangled her on her bra strap I wonder? It's fun to speculate - after all I, like Bond and Sean Connery, advocate violence toward (some) women. Some women are fucken bastards!
damn. Blofeld should have been killed in a violent showdown with Bond, so that Bond could get satisfactory revenge on Blofeld for the murder of his wife.
Because there was a talk of remaking Thunderball, which they(other producers) eventually did with Never say never again, and this was a way for the producers to show everybody else that for all intentions and purposes Spectre was finished after DAF, and Blofeld?? Well, he ended up falling down a chimney, which was hilarious and Monty Python-esque
I think Charles Gray was the best Blofeld... he is the one BIG redeeming feature in "Diamonds are Forever". I feel a bit sorry for him in this scene. There is a legend that as a very young actor, CG met Aleister Crowley on a train and modelled much of his subsequent act on him.
@broadspeedbullit Yeah, where the hell does Bllofed recruit all his heavies and cronies? I mean really, seriously, come on! What about the japanese bloke in You Only Live Twice - "Evacuate the controls! Evacuate the controls!"
ha ha ha ha... seriously.... with the whole place going up in flames, he has time to give that bit of advice... like people wouldnt know to leave unless he said it twice
but this scene, like all of blofeld's scenes in DAF are simply hilarious... blofeld is not menacing and poses no threat... the only scene where charles grey looked comfortable in the film is when he is in drag, which is something he didnt look to uncomfortable portraying... what a nancy
@broadspeedbullit It's his lack of dedication and perseverance that put him in this predicament. 7 more seconds and the job's done and he had to take a break.
but theres one problem there is still that Lawsuit to the charther but I think the best actor that do a good job as Blofield would be the villan that played Renard in the world is not enough I think he would do a great job as Blofiled
Idk, I really really really like Spectre. I dunno why people aren't excited to see a modernized version of Spectre with Quantum. I'd love to see a modern version of Blofeld.
you're right, but the inconsistencies were so blatant. charles gray was in YOLT as a bond ally and, then a few years later charles gray as blofeld with the same face as the bond ally. a more physically active blofeld (telly savalas) in OHMSS compared to the donald pleasance passive blofeld in YOLT.

this is in response 2 th last 3 cmmnts: Grey was ALSO in You Only Live Twice as Dikko Henderson th Brittish expatriot gone Japanese. ther is a story that Blofeld based his plastic surgery looks on Dikko. THIS IS NOT TH LAST REAL SHOWDOWN, as Roger Moore clearly KILLED Blofeld at th beginning of For Your Eyes Only, all due respect 2 Sir Sean Connery.
Lol funny scene, though I really didnt like Diamonds are Forever too much, it was all a bit too tongue and cheek I quite like Charles Grey - more famous for been Jack Hawkings dubbed voice, after he had his voice box removed because of throat cancer. I didnt think he was Blofeld material though. Personally I think Bond should have killed him in You Only Live Twice, as it was in the novel Blofeld was most sinister in From Russia With Love and Thunderball where we never see his face.
You can thumb this down until your hand decomposes but this is - by a considerable margin - the worst of all 21 (and I'm willing to bet 22) James Bond films. It has absolutely nothing going for it.
In fact the opening parachute scene In Moonraker still is top notch. Good enough to be re-used as Bond catched up falling plane in Goldeneye (which was nowhere near as well done)
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth moonraker is in fact the worst ever bond film, its so unrealistic and its unbeleveable they stooped so low in a bit to out do star wars!
Yes, but it was a commercial success. In fact it took 16 years for it to finally be beaten in the box office, when Goldeneye was released in 1995. Up to the over-the-top space fight Moonraker actually is a great ride.
Like I said the opening sequence still is first class, and nothing like it had been shot back in 1979.
An invisible car is more realistic? Die Another Day was the final nail in the coffin of the old James Bond franchise. In my mind the reboot was overdue
When you think about it, it's hilarious that this is how James Bond's most evil nemesis is finally destroyed (not counting For Your Eyes Only). Frankly, though, I wouldn't have it any other way.
It is supose that Blofeld's dead is in For Your Eyes Only, because in this film this is not clear that Blofeld died, we only see the minisub in the air with the base in fire. This final is an extrategy of the productors with the intention of release other films with Blofeld, but the lost of rights about the characters didn´t allowed this, and they must be killing Blofeld in For Yours Eyes Only.
This film is my favorite 007 film and it is wrongly accused of being the worst. Think about it, if Connery didn't return then John Gavin would play Bond which would have been diabolical. If Bond believed he killed Blofeld in the pre-title sequence then obviously MI6 would give him another assignment. It's a Madsen Model 1946 submachine gun.

I love Diamonds are forever! I first saw this film when I was about 9 and it was the film that introduced me to Bond! Its pure 007!
lelvish1 3 years ago
Lol funny scene, though I really didnt like Diamonds are Forever too much, it was all a bit too tongue and cheek I quite like Charles Grey - more famous for been Jack Hawkings dubbed voice, after he had his voice box removed because of throat cancer. I didnt think he was Blofeld material though. Personally I think Bond should have killed him in You Only Live Twice, as it was in the novel Blofeld was most sinister in From Russia With Love and Thunderball where we never see his face.

In that case, I think they should have made OHMSS first, because it's a real important story for the series (especially the books)

The explosion at the end of the oil rig scene.

Has that explosion scene been CGI'ed??
I don't remember that in the original film...

which explosion?

You can thumb this down until your hand decomposes but this is - by a considerable margin - the worst of all 21 (and I'm willing to bet 22) James Bond films. It has absolutely nothing going for it.

Mr Kidd and Mr Wint are going for DAF.
Plus, Moonwrecker is the worst Bond film ever.
GreatTribbleHunt 3 years ago
Die Another Day makes Moonraker look like art.
In fact the opening parachute scene In Moonraker still is top notch. Good enough to be re-used as Bond catched up falling plane in Goldeneye (which was nowhere near as well done)
SteveSpicerPortsmuth 2 years ago 11
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth moonraker is in fact the worst ever bond film, its so unrealistic and its unbeleveable they stooped so low in a bit to out do star wars!
xxxdarkheartedboixxx 9 months ago
@xxxdarkheartedboixxx

Please that great scene where Blofeld says "we could destroy Kansas but no one would know for a year"

"Diamonds are forever" is a really campy and Austin Powers like film, but I cannot help but like it.
anton1990 3 years ago 15
I totally agree. It's hard to take it seriously, but the film is still a lot of fun. I mean Blofeld's a transvestite in one scene.
bigswanno 3 years ago 4
Agree, but Moonraker is even more like a spoof.
Giel1987 3 years ago
at least it did extremely well in the box office
fact is it was the biggest Bond movie hit until Goldeneye 16 years later
after the enormous success of Star Wars who can blame the producers of the Bond movies?
McLarenMercedes 2 years ago
remember by the 1970's the times were changing and the 1960's Bond would have seen outdated by the audience
in fact Sean Connery himself did the role as if he was making a comedy and was tired of the role
I am amazed they managed to have two homosexual henchmen without the PC crew going berserk

chitoryu12 3 years ago 3
When you think about it, it's hilarious that this is how James Bond's most evil nemesis is finally destroyed (not counting For Your Eyes Only). Frankly, though, I wouldn't have it any other way.
MrAllanJ 3 years ago 4
It is supose that Blofeld's dead is in For Your Eyes Only, because in this film this is not clear that Blofeld died, we only see the minisub in the air with the base in fire. This final is an extrategy of the productors with the intention of release other films with Blofeld, but the lost of rights about the characters didn´t allowed this, and they must be killing Blofeld in For Yours Eyes Only.
