Bomber pilots saw persistent contrails exactly like this during the second world war. They had to avoid their own contrail spawned clouds on the way back.
From my own observations, the trails - be they Chemicals or Con - spread out as they fall to Earth, joining to form a blanket of low-hanging, dirty-white cloud cover.
As Gavin Pretor-Pinney says in his book, 'The Cloudspotter's Guide'...
"There is growing consensus amongst Scientists that the greatest environmental impact of aviation comes not from its greenhouse gas emissions but, in fact, from the clouds that the flights create."
