In Iraq, our troops are pulling out, but we still have a GIANT embassy there and over 17,000 contractors.

There isn't now - there are just minor uprisings, minor skirmishes, a little bit of insurgents. But the Iraq War is over, so let's just ignore Iraq. It is done. As for Afghan, we have spent most of the time fighting the Taliban ourselves, and trying to destroy al-Qaeda, which have been successful.

The war there looks like it would drag on for more than 2 years. Let their own people sort out their issues. The US taxpayers shouldn't be funding the trillions of dollars spent there and we shouldn't be losing hundreds - thousands of troops for a pointless cause

If they became an enemy, why would that matter? The Taliban never had much of an air force, and they wouldn't have a navy since they are a land-locked country. The Taliban exist for this main reason - they can take refuge in neighboring Pakistan. The Pakistanis support them, and do not go after them. Why couldn't we learn from the Soviet Union's mistake? They went into Afghanistan and were there for 9 years. It drained their economy and public support fell heavily. This is what's happening to the US now
