Check out the eBook of the 2nd Edition of "Joe Meek's Bold Techniques" by Barry Cleveland, chockablock with information about Meek's production techniques and his extraordinary contributions to recording.
I was going to ask what is the relevence of the pictures of the leather goods shop in the video but reading further down I see it was where Joe Meek had his studio. Amazing that Telstar was made there, I was 5 when that song came out it was one of the first songs I became aware of and really liked; nearly 50 years later if I hear it come on the radio I still have to stop and listen to it. I was unaware of Joe Meek before seeing this video, what a tragic story.
@Khultan... He was paranoid, and thought someone was stealing his ideas, however that is not confirmed as to why he killed her (no one knows), It could of just been an accident.
Joe looks extremely haggered at 5.00 ..like he's been on the amphetamines for days & days & days !! Those purple hearts & blueys didn't help his paranoid state of mind at all towards the end of his life..(they didn't help Brian either for that matter)..they helped me loads, grind grind chatter chatter shake rattle n' roll & no sleep for years
This is a top song & Brian Epstein knew this was going to sell despite his record shop owning family saying different he ordered lots of copies & they all flew off the shelves in Liverpool !! Then he went on to manage the worlds most famous group!! Like Joe Meek he died very young & they were both geniuses!! RIP Joe RIP Brian! RX
Just think, Matt Belemy was the son of one of the guitar players. The band MUSE and the song Knights of Cydonia came from this. I find that very intresting
you have all to see the great & tragic movie about Joe Meek who produced lots of song at his london appartment. the movie is called telstar, the story of Joe meek
Love this video. "Telstar" I have always loved as it has continued to strike a chord with me as it evokes early 60's, the era. First time I've heard "Johnny, Remember Me." A rather haunting song. Home movies, their ability to freeze time," quite effective. Thanks for touching that "resounding chord."
i'm just turned 48 years old , and think this is a good piece of history . it's good knowing about what was happening in the 1961 - 63 era . i find it very interesting . the music , the cars and the fashion looked great . it's a good video !
Great video, feel you've really captured the feel of the times there. We've done a new version of Telstar, please check it out too. TELSTAR by THE DUELLING PIANOS - tongue in cheek video to go with.
THE VERY FIRST TIME I HEARD "JOHNNY REMEMBER ME" (LATER FOUND OUT IT WAS NO.1 THE WEEK OF MY 8TH BIRTHDAY) WAS TOWARDS THE END OF 1963(JUST AS BEATLEMANIA WAS AT HIS HEIGHT) AT THE HOUSE OF ONE OF MY PARENTS FRIENDS. WAS TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY IT HOW SPOOKY THAT GEFF GODDARD CAME FROM THE SAME TOWN AS ME.
I have walked past that shop on HOLLOWAY ROAD so many times and always think how incredible it was that so many great records wer created in that little upstairs flat, JOE MEEK was a great producer, and very inventive, but sadly a victim of his time, and in the end also a victim of the very industry that he loved.
@john111257@john111257 The Outlaws were, Billy Kuy, lead guitar, Bobby Graham, drums, Reg Hawkins, rhythm guitar and Chas Hodges (chas & Dave) on bass guitar.
The original Outlaws plus singer Lissa Gray provided the backing on the actual record. With assistance from the legendary Geoff Goddard on keyboards.
The song originally appeared in the TV drama Harpers West One, in which John Leyton was playing Johnny St Cry, a Pop singer opening a record department.
@Dean66Essex WHY ..joes ideas ..techniques were far advanced..ok...the beatles were awesome...but george martin twiddled the knobs...joe messed about..and created a unique sound...ok..some sound ancient now...telstar...johnny..doesnt..shook the big guys with his sound...a bit of true guidance he would have still been here now..anyone knows how hard to run a buisness on yr own...BIG BOYS WANT YR ACTION...STILL AROUND NOW..THINK SUPERMARKETS..
@Dean66Essex Maybe he was thinking thank Christ I didn't..with Epstein chasing Heinz and Lennon playing Meek and Epstein off against each other, murder would have been done at 304 long before 1967 !! And threatening Lennon with a shotgun..well, I just hope the sights were well greased as John would have shoved it up Joe's bum. Murder yes but by whom to who about whom, who knows ..good film there !
And the Eddie Cochran tribute song, "Just Like Eddie," by The Tornados' bass player (and perhaps Meek's boy-toy), Heinz Burt, is also a great record of the Meek archives.
45 years ago today since Joe passed. RIP Joe.

If you have a question just ask me in the comments box. no need for private messeges.....
To answer you question pete, Lissa Grey was the female vocalist on Johnny Remember Me, John Leyton lead vocals and music backed by The Outlaws.
