  • Guys guys, they're not Nazis. This was before the Russian Revolution and a little before World War 1. So yeah not a Nazi in sight.

  • I've been in "Fiddler" 3 times (Nachum the Beggar, Lazar Wolfe, Fyedka). This and "The Dream" are always my favorite. I've never met a Golde who could sing that low, though!

  • That is one "aromatic" video. =p

  • this was my very 1st Broadway play I love this show

  • At 3:46, when Tevye saw Motel's shoe over the shot glass, he closed his eyes and savored the last second of control he had over his daughter. Because he knew that when he heard the glass shatter, it marked the first second of his daughter living her own life.

  • @MrJumpingdude

    I never saw that... nice!

  • Yep. My daughter is getting married Saturday the 17th of December, and this song has been stuck in my head. I can't cry. I still can bench press 335 lbs. I'm going to listen to some AC/DC.

  • @sabartholomew Be strong for tomorrow!

  • in my school play im golde and i hate singing solos!!!!! so nervous!

  • Now I understand what my Amish friend meant. This is a great song

  • I got the role of Tevye, the show is in two months.

I could never fill such large shoes.

  • Am i the only one who thinks this is like something out of a tim burton film?

  • I stood under a huppah with one of my childhood friends (whom I ended up with) and my mom started humming this song. Haha

  • feels so sad for such a happy time...

  • @Conservative4

The real happinss is the restricted one. It derives from profound and complicated perception of life.

  • At 2:50 there's a fiddler and he's on the roof!

  • Kochany Tewjie.

  • i want to have this song sung on during my wedding.... :/

  • Patriarchy = love of family, Love of daughter..never listen to the POISON of feminism.

  • 1:39 >:(

  • @annie10103

    >:'C

  • FUCK NAZIS

  • @TheStolenBike Lol! Amen. From an agnostic. And fuck the people trying to revive holocaust revisionism (even though these are supposed to be Russian Jews, who experienced the same kind of little-acknowledged cruelty from the Russian government).

  • @TheStolenBike those weren't nazis.

  • no matter what religion, im sure this is what is going through every parent's mind at their child's wedding

  • @lilly7055 Oh my gosh yes. So true!

  • My Jewish friend's marriage was very much one like this. she is an Orthodox Jew and I am a Christian, but I will always be her Tinnileh and she's always my Beckyleh

  • all these candles in the barn are seriously scaring me

  • I was raised in a city where there was a large Jewish population and many of my friends were Jewish. One of the things I've always so admired about the Jewish culture is that it is so much more than just a religion. It is a way of life. It is a lifelong celebration of a very special relationship between G-d and His chosen people. I am not Jewish, but my parents raised me to be respectful and to learn about other faiths. It has been one of the ongoing enrichments of my life. I am blessed.

  • I am so tempted to make a joke about jews, but who cares im thirsty I need some orange jews

  • I used to have to sing this when I was a kid. I had no idea what it was about (besides growing up...or something).

Even though I had to sing it a lot and could have easily detested it, I really like this song :)

  • It's so sad what the jews had to go through...

  • I feel so sad for him at 1:42! I just want to give him a hug!

  • had this played at both my kids weddings....will make me cry still....especially when my daughter came back home with a kid...lol

  • In 1988, my dad walked me down the aisle to this song. His mom, Golda, was from Russia, he was so proud!

  • i never knew this was from fiddler WOW!

  • Omg.... Truely?

  • i played motel, i loved fiddler

  • I just got the lead as tevye in my middle school play

I could never fill such shoes

  • Love love LOVE

  • geez why does everythin havet to turn into a fight on youtube?? can't we just enjoy the beautyof the song?!

  • Beautiful song. I wish that all Jews would come to know Jesus is Lord and that all Christians would come to know that Judiasm is righteous. What a wonderful world it would be if that came to be.

  • @sickandtiredofthis1 Considering the fact that Christianity canonically considers Judaism redundant and Judaism would consider Christianity by definition heretical... Well. Wouldn't hold my breath.

  • the king of queens

  • Za słabo znam j.angielski.Szkoda!

  • So beautiful!

  • You just gotta love the way Laser Wolf take it....

  • @ashlayblues

OH MY GOD. BUT HIS FACE IS SO FUNNY LIKE HIS FACE LOOKS LIKE A CAT ITS SO HILARIOUS

  • My favorite song from this movie. You get all the perspectives of life in this sequence. Is that a tear in my eye? No... ok yeah :`(

  • this song was played at my parents wedding. i plan on having it played at mine too.

  • one race human get used to it we are here to stay

  • i saw this play live by a high school and it was sooo amazing i luv this movie alot the music is always stuck in my head

  • What I can say is that this movie really enlightened me on aspects of the Jewish heritage that I was unaware of. My unintentional ignorance clouded my view of a beautiful culture. Now, to say I base Judaism entirely on a musical is ridiculous... but it has definitely shown me that even once perceived "ugly" cultures, can have just as much beauty as any other. Beautiful song, beautiful musical.

  • @JLXOutlaw

This movie was pretty true to life and traditions of those days. My grandmother, Golda, fled Russia in 1908.

  • @JLXOutlaw wat r u talking about?

  • @ehmcginty Wut r u taking abutt?

I dono, maybe get a highschool diploma and you'll catch just the jist of what I said.

  • @JLXOutlaw I realize this is an odd question, but are you male or female?

  • @JLXOutlaw

You are just capitivated by top-notch actors...

I think youre very easily manipulated. Offcourse Judiasm is a normal culture. Did you think they raped animals and slaughtered little babies? Why do you have to be aware of someones culture to respect it?

  • @JLXOutlaw You make a solid point. I'll acknowledge that.

    I'm simply fooled by Hollywood.

Let me ask you this, how do you feel about a country being run by people far more naive then me.

A culture raised on "Jersey Shore" and MTV garbage.

Atleast, I can admire something that deserves it, like this.

    Would you rather have me?

Or a kid who couldn't tell you the difference between sanctity or the mundane.

    Up or down.

    Right and wrong.

    You get my point?

  • @JLXOutlaw Why are you replying to your self? o__O

  • @Akilwrath OOps.

  • @JLXOutlaw

Judaism cannot be an ugly culture if it is the basis for today's world civilization-morals, codes, ethics, laws, etc.

  • i usually listen to this while reading something but at the end for some reason i really like it so i always watch it ^_^

  • Always will love this song

  • @AnthonyBragg Jewish people fucked up America? How fucking ignorant are you dude?! Some of the greatest things were invented by Jewish people. Chemotherapy, Vaccination, Hershleys, Dell, Microsoft CEO. Yeah totally fucked America up you moron. READ IT, AND WEEP! Because myself and hundreds if not thousands of others will be totally owning you!

  • I think this is beautiful.

  • This is such an awesome movie!

  • @AnthonyBragg why don't you kill yourself just like your leader did

  • I love this whole show to be honest, its our opening night to perform this, eeeeeeeek <3

  • I know this scene is of a wedding so it should be happy, but for some reason this song always makes me feel very sad

  • @asianlover93 that's how most weddings are the older you get.

  • Skaista dziesma. Kaimini.

  • See you again someday, Mom

  • 感動的ないい曲です!「屋根の上のバイオリン引き」最高です。

  • whenever i listen to this i always have to do the dramatic motions Joey and Jesse did on Full House when they were sending off Stephanie and DJ to school XD

  • this song used to be my fathers' song when we we're small..

  • SUNRIS,SUNSET!!!!LOVELY SONG

  • ANTI NAZI ANTI FAZISTA

  • why they all look so sad? wt this story is about? even the couple seems nt happy @@

  • @Queenietcm . They're not "sad" ... a wedding for them is a very serious, solomn occasion. At the very end of this clip after the groom breaks the glass by stepping on it everyone yells MAZEL TOV! (Congratulations).

The breaking of the glass is symbolic -- shows how fragile marriage can be - so the couple should strive to work together to keep it safe.

  • @RIDDLERSGAL The breaking of the glass is actually a way to remember the destruction of the two temples. In Judaism it is typical to temper a time of celebration with remembrance of calamities. It's no different than the spilling of wine during the Passover seder over the plagues.

  • @IDF1987 I thought the breaking of the glass represented the breaking of the woman's hymen... Being serious.

  • @caleb31588 I know you are as I've heard that interpretation before.

  • @IDF1987 is that it? whats the canopy for? Hmm they spill wine on the passover? Thats very interesting. thx

  • @pdxeddie1111 the "chuppah" or the canopy, symbolises their first home...

  • @batchava

That it is. Such a beautiful song.

  • Isn't a wedding supposed to be happy? This song is so depressing!

  • Comment removed

  • They say that when the groom breaks the glass, that's the last time he gets to put his foot down.

  • Wow, you can't even see their lips move. Jeff Dunham ain't got nothing on these folks!

  • @tjsbigidea XD

  • i'm auditioning for the role Tevye next winter. I'm grossly excited. Such a beautiful song, scratch that, Musical.

  • BEATIFULL !!!

  • Just saw the production at the theatre in Worcester, Ma-very well done production. Love the music in it.

  • @TheJoe023 Really? I would have seen it because I live only a couple minutes away from there lol.

  • @mollymousemm-wow! Right near Worcester, Ma? You never know who you encounter espcially on Utube.

  • @TheJoe023 Lol, true

  • i did this play in middle school, had so much fun with it

  • the chorus of this song sounds so familar. like its from another movie but i cant think of what it could be DX

  • @rosarei89 I think it's Cinderella. thats what it reminds me of.

  • @rosarei89 It was used in the Lion King 1 1/2 when Timon and Pumba sing about Simba and Nala falling in love.

  • @rosarei89 they had a verse of this in the lion king 1 1/2 so yeah

  • @rosarei89 It reminds me of the hunchback of the Notredame I think!

  • Is anyone else besides me holding their breaths because those candles are dangerously close to hair and other flammables?

  • I love the Chorus of this song it just sticks in my head :)

  • Ah, this movie captures both the sorrow and joy of life so well. Time does funny things huh? Thus is the essence of sentimentality, a longing for the past, but a realization that things must move forward.

  • @AnthonyBragg

Hm a government that takes away your freedom, ability to excel in life, freedom of speech, and right to basically do anything? (not to mention a government that will inevitably fall into terrible corruption) ya pass.

What I mean to say here is Fuck you! That is all =)

  • This song always puts me to tears. I wish my dad thought that way of me, but it is a beautiful song none the less

  • This song is just... wow. It's so profound. :)

Out of curiosity, could someone explain why the groom steps on a glass, please? I looked it up, but a few different meanings came up and I wasn't sure which is right.

  • @MadameApathy I'm not sure, but I would say most websites are more likely to be accurate than a youtube coment page.

  • @MadameApathy

the idea is that no matter how happy or perfect life seems, it isn't, because the Jews are still in exile. Breaking the glass is supposed to signify something going wrong, so that the wedding won't be truly "perfect"

  • @MadameApathy

    Profound and moving

  • @AnthonyBragg yeah. and then every time dumb asses like you fucked up, you'd be shot on sight. that's the only good thing I can see of the Nazis winning, everything else would fucking suck.

  • @ScarFire816

    ATAH EIZEL

  • @AnthonyBragg you're a fucking idiot, plain and simple. Not only did the Nazis unjustly nearly kill off a race, but if they did win, we'd have the shittiest government ever and then still have riots against them, you fucking moron.

  • my uncle had this song on at his wedding. My dad broke into tears.

  • This is the single most profound song that Broadway ever produced. Glorious. God bless all who stand under a canopy.

  • this brings tears to my eyes, its so beautiful

  • this was sung at my wedding

  • I like the look on the butcher's face who was 'robbed' of his promised wife-to-be :)

  • sweet dreams ..

  • Such a beautiful song. Too bad that anti-semites ruin this song both in and out of the film. I'm an anti-theist, yet still I apreciate culturers different form my one. Fuck Xenophobia.

  • @AnthonyBragg really? most likely you'd be stuck in the year 1970... Jewish minds are some of the brightest there are... they are the light that keeps you out of the dark.

Also, the Nazi physicists and doctors etc' where taken in (the west's darkest hour) by the USA and Russia--- so they weren't exactly "lost" in the war. what I really mean to say is this:

DEAR ANTI-SEMITE, PLEASE CRAWL BACK INTO THE SHIT HOLE THAT YOU CAME FROM, YOU'RE WASTING OXYGEN THAT THE REST OF US, HUMANS, BREATHE!!!

  • @Elisheval no joke! the jews are litterally my favorite people on earth. such a strong defined sense of what is right and ethical, their strong constitution.the culture is really a thing to behold. i see why they are God's chosen people. i may be biased though being that i am a christian and some of my favorite leaders are elijah, moses, king david, noah, abraham, isaac and jacob (israel)and of course there is Jesus who was a jew.

  • @Elisheval Joseph Mengele, one of the worst doctors, was actually never caught by the Americans and spent the rest of his life in South-America...

  • @Varghalur as far as I know , the USA didn't put a lot of resources into finding him... they left that up to Israel and private organizations.

I didn't mean that EVERY scientist was given a free pass--- but too many did. Werner von Braun--- the head of the german missile program, who was responsible for the terror englishmen felt during the Blitz.... somehow made his way to NASA to help design the rockets for the race to the moon.

  • @Elisheval He got to america pretending to be an innocent german soldier. Though I personally think grotesque experiments on jews and romanian people are rather ... terrible, to say the least, and in addition to that Joseph decided who were gassed and who weren't. Perhaps the americans had another view on what is a morally correct thing to do, since it is believed that Joseph continued his experiments in South-america...

I just think it wasn't a correct thing to do by letting him just get away.

  • @Elisheval funfact. Einstein was a jew

  • @Elisheval Anybody eating animals or dairy products is poisoned with mad cow disease by now. The Jews continued to perform kosher-cruel slaughters even after contracting Tay Sachs disease, which is 100 percent fatal. The Washington politicians have made it illegal even to diagnose mad cow disease. I am so smart because I follow Paul McCartney's advice -- Go Vegan To Save The World.

  • @redfordforpresident You are a sick, sad shell of a human being.

Because if you took a biology class you'd know that Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (in layman's: Mad cow) is a genetics disorder of the prions from eating contaminated meat. Tay Sachs is a recessive genetic disease (not enough characters available to explain this complicated concept to you) and has nothing to do with Mad cow.

Don't talk about things you don't understand.

Too bad mcCartney doesn't say that you should get steralized...

  • @redfordforpresident You do realise that Judaism actually supports vegetarianism, one of the only religions to do so? Meat-eating was permitted after the flood, when there wasn't enough plant-matter to sustain human life. Permitted, but not encouraged. The idea of Kosher butchery was to minimise pain.

And you should listen to Elisheval.

  • @Elisheval "light that keeps you out of the dark"... illuminati much?

  • @R0gueB0y123 actually, an ancient saying, from a book you may of heard of--- Isaiah 49:6... (old testament)

    וּנְתַתִּיךָ לְאוֹר גּוֹיִם לִהְיוֹת יְשׁוּעָתִי עַד קְצֵה הָאָרֶץ

"I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth."

  • I'm sorry but I just had to laugh at the guy at 1:38 XD

  • @annie10103 He was mad because he was promised the bride's hand in marriage before the deal was later broken

  • @jimalda

    Still hilarious expression though :)

  • Life is made of special moments, please god by you all of you

  • @tijuanamarisol666, cancer. Small Cell Carcinoma. Sadly, the woman who played Golda in this movie also died of cancer two years after it was made.

  • @Notanotherenigma oh my, i didn't know that.. brilliant woman, brilliant Golda...

  • @AnthonyBragg wow i love your comment. i mean really, if we'd just continued wwii and killed off another 11,000,000+ people, the world would be such a better place, i mean really, because don't we all know that mass genocide is just such a wonder ful thing >_> . fuck off, you antisemetist, racist, eugenecist prick. it really irritates me when i see some ignorant prick go and write a bunch of shit about how wwii was supposedly a good thing: wtf? how do even you conceive such a thought!?

  • @AnthonyBragg You have serious problems...

  • @AnthonyBragg Why do speculate about things that never happened?

  • Like this if you remember John Stamos and Dave Coulier singing this from "Full House."

  • 2:47

The most beautiful part of this song.

  • did he really just put the wedding band on her INDEX finger?

  • i originally came here to listen to the word mozaltoff, it would make me giggle but after seeing the top comments i think i want to kill my self. i love the passion, great song
