  • LEARNING THE PIANO?

  • 1:58 the guy in front of the soldier asking the questions is starting to crack XD

  • *screams* LEARNING THE PI-ANO?!

  • My fellow soldiers and I quoted this after marching in a parking lot for 3 hours straight. Humor makes life berrible sometimes hahaha!

  • how do you keep a straight face with Palin's face barely and inch from yours and him shouting "YOU WANT TO LEARN THE PEYANOH!!!?" with such ridiculous facial expressions XD

  • MARCHINGUPANDDOWNTHESQUARE, NOTGOODENOUGHFORYOU, EH?!

    Well...

    RIGHTOFFYAGO!

  • Non Monty Python member talking in a sketch? That is quite rare

  • LEARNIN' THE PIANO!!!

    Python in the prime.

    PROPER!

  • Narrator: "Democracy and humanitarism have always been the trademarks of the british army."

    Drill Sargeant: "Rubbish!"

    Narrator: "SHHH!"

  • I have one thing to say to the dislikers...

    RIGHT OFF YA GO!

  • 2000th LIKE!!!!

  • LEARNING THE PIANO???!!!!

  • His kit is spot on, except he's a Staff/Colour Sergeant, is referred to as 'Colour or Staff', and then calls himself 'Sergeant Major' - If they were correct, this scene would be brilliant!

  • haha

    he gets ditched

  • "RIGHT, OFF YOU GO!" the one right after the piano guy... Michaels hat bobbles back and forth perfectly right after he says it. Never notice, but it makes this scene just like his facial expressions do.

    This scene is literally perfect.

  • Asuras wrath!!!

  • WOULD YOU NOW!?!?!

hahaha that made me laugh so hard!

  • love the way he says "squaaaarrrrreeee" :P

  • this is probs the funniest monty python scene out of all the movies

  • The expressions on his face just make me lose it lol.

  • one of monty pythons funniest sketches

  • 0:46 the guy behind the dude is trying very hard to hold the LOLs...

  • Comment removed

  • Memories of army selection ._.

  • @Bisonrulz23 But if you look at the Cap Badge, you would see that he is badged Grenadier Guards. In that regiment, Sergeant Major is three chevrons surmounted by a crown.

  • @wikigeek That has me confused, He's wearing the badge of rank as what I recognise to be Colour Sergeant, but he's addressed as Sergeant, if he's a Sergeant Major, he should be addressed as Sir.. ah well, all abit of comedy afterall!! (The monty python sketch I mean!!)

  • Michael Palin is the best out of all the Pythons. He's also a very nice man. I met him March of this year and he was extremely friendly, signed one of his books for me because I do a TV show like his old ones, except mine's about GPS treasure-hunting. Can't wait to get another chance to see him, might ask him to help me march up and down the square!

  • I love Michael Palin!

  • Only if Marching band were this easy

  • Still simply wonderful no matter how many times i have seen it. A classic

  • I'm going to get my ATC Squadron to do this XD

It works out fine that I'm a Sergeant too XD

  • @CatchThePanda Yes. I will be 1st Sgt. in CAP soon... the USA equivalent to ATC... and this would be awesome. LOL. :D

  • That's why Michael Palin is my favourite Python.

  • Possible Spoof of Alec Guiness in "Tunes of Glory".

  • MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE DRILL SQAURE AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!

    RIGHT, off you go then!

Sergeant Mahor MARCHING up and won the square, LEFT RIGHT LEFT

This is why I want to join the Defence Force, lol

  • Ha Ha! Michael Palin is a genius, definitely one of the best actors in the Pythons.

  • "MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUA-AAW!"

  • aaaaaaaand this is why i joined the army

  • hard*

  • The guy in front of the one that wants to read his book has a hear time composing himself :) These guys are great!!

  • And I have N-O idea how any of them don't break out laughing XD

    I couldn't do it XD

    lmfao

I've already tried not to smile through this video- not possible XD

  • Michael Palin has "T-H-E-E" funniest voice in the world XD

  • ALMOST falls off 1:29

  • WOULD YOU NOW?!?!?!?!

  • "Democracy and humanitarianism have always been trades marks of the British Army.."

    "RUBBISH!"

  • @VolunteerLS110 - Haha that bit actually sounds a little like Ringo Starr XD

  • @VolunteerLS110 Shush

  • The dude is so animated that his hat bobbles around on his head when he yells. Subtle, but hilarious.

  • Michael Palin is so awesome he can automatically sense when someone silently raises their hand. 0,25

  • Right! You go and read yer book then!

  • 1:30 fantastic walking away acting.

  • Right! Sergeant Major marching up and down the square!

  • I tried saying I had something better to do and ended up doing push ups

  • ...BTW Fawlty Towers is also excelent, if you want to learn english.

  • love the way his hat nearly comes off at 1.30.

    "RIGHT, OFF YOU GO!!!!!!!!!"

  • One of my all time faves! So funny it hurts!

  • Hahahahaha, im laughing till im collapsing ! i got tears in my eyes, HAHA ! "Don't stand there gorbing, like you never seen the hand of god before !"

  • I'm not surprised Michael lost his voice a few times during the monty python.

  • Micheal Palin's Sgt Major is probably the most common impression done in my family.

    Absolute classic.

  • Uhm.... I would rather play MW2 than march up and down the square.

  • the way he plays the sarge reminds me of caesar

  • His has so much electricity his hat bounces when he yells amazing I thought that only happens in cartoons....well and in the british army!

  • Finest Michael Palin moment ever. I love that he gets so irate that his hat almost comes off.

  • Best Palin Ever

  • EVERYBODY ELSE QUITE CONTENT TO JOIN IN WITH MY LITTLE SCHEME OF MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE????!!!!!!!

  • The guys in the back trying to not piss themselves laughing haha

  • Michael Palin , legend!!!

  • 18 people would rather march up and down the square

  • @TheGreatMOne lol. good riff. ;-)

  • @TheGreatMOne Hahah- I made the same comment on another copy of the video...

  • @kiwispam84 hahahaha nice

  • I would go marching up and down the square with Michael Palin any day, come rain come shine! Definitely good enough for me.

  • Er... He's a Staff Sergeant...

  • @TheBallard100 Acctualy he's a Colour Sergeant. Infantry regiment.

  • @LCplCombat Fair enough. I thought Colour Sergeants were only RM, but I stand corrected.

The main point was that he wasn't a Sergeant Major.

  • @TheBallard100

You are right in more ways than one. As the rank of 'Sergeant Major' no longer exists, it was four chevrons. Sergeant Major does exist but as appointed. i.e. Squadron or Company Sergeant Major (All amrs or Infantry respectively). It is usually a WO2 however it can be a SSgt or CSgt during transition periods

RSM (Regimental Sergeant Major is a WO1)

  • @falcons1988 When was it four chevrons? I thought it was always a crown, and then Squadron/Company Sergeant Major was the crown with the leaves, and Regimental Sergeant Major was the fancy coat of arms-type thing.

I don't really know that much about army ranks, but I can tell you all about RAF ranks.

  • @TheBallard100

The four chevrons, was about 120 years ago and previous. Then it got and expanded. To what it is now, WO2, the crown and leaves and WO1 Coat of Arms type thing.

  • @falcons1988 Well, I never knew that.

  • Thats a democratic army

  • He's not even a Sgt Major?! :L

  • Democracy and humanitarianism have always been trade marks of the british army. That's sarcasm straight out of the dictionary. Priceless.

  • @mateuszmattias

Well they don't have compulsory military service like many other nations.

  • Ranks very high on my list on Monty Python Skits worth watching over and over.

  • I was in tears the first time I watched this.

  • Michael Palin is the greatest!!

  • Even though this is my favourite Python sketch I have to mention the massive continuity errors. One second he's on their left, then their right.

  • Palin acting this angry is something you RARELY see.. lol!!

  • that guy behind "Atkinson" is dying to laugh haha

  • I'd prefer to march up and down the square!

  • 18 people didn't have anything better to do

  • LEARNING THE PIANO ???!!

  • "Democracy and Humanitarianism have always been trademarks of the British Army"

    "Rubbish!"

    Shh

  • @AndRod29 sounded like the drill sergeant said "rubbi-" and then the narrator said "sh"

  • That's a Staff Sergeant, not just a Sergeant.

  • Now, today we're going to do marching up and down the square.

That is, unless any of you've got anything better to dooooooooooooooooooo.

  • @hendrixfabio Well i'd like to be at home iwth the wife and kids sir.

  • More, please!:D

  • He must have had rough voice after this lol

  • the guy behind eric idle is trying so hard not to laugh

  • oh, if only the army were really like that... woulda been a lot nicer time... lol

  • Tels a story...

  • 18 people have never seen the hand of God before.

  • LEARNING THE PIANO!?!?

  • 1:17 thas my favorite part..and then his hat almost falls off..really makes him like a cartoon general or something lol

  • That 1st guy is really brave

The rest of the guys are so-so

  • Too bad this never happens to our army. " Rubbish!" The, SGT

  • MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU EYY!!

  • I love how his hat nearly falls off at 1:29 :)

  • The thing is, this is really what quite a lot of really good cadet SNCOs are like. It's where the fun is. I mean, obviously its a bit exagerrated, but he's got the voice and the mannerisms down.

  • Too bad he isn't in the Para's! That would have been more hilarious!

  • What is he saying at the very beginning? "Dont stand there _____ing, like you've never seen ____ before"?

  • @emjee Don't stand there gawking! Like you've never seen the hand of God before?!

  • @emjee

The opening line is.. " Don't stand there GAWPING! Like you've never seen the hand of GOD before!"

"Gawping" is predominantly a British word meaning to Stare in a stupid or rude way.

  • @Climbatize I learned english watching Monty Python :)

  • @Climbatize I believe the word is "gobbing" as in starring with your gob (mouth) open.

  • @jrlunger No, it's definitely gawping. Gawping is very common in the south of England, where Monty Python originates.

  • @emjee gawp, the hand of god

  • @emjee And the hand of god ascending into the clouds from the end of the prior skit.

  • Comment removed

  • Ha ha. Who the f disliked this?

  • The british RSM is a little different from the Marine DI and that's quite true

  • I wish I had a Sgt. Major like him. I'd march up and down the square like a pro.

  • Masterclass.

  • michael palin is just brilliant at screaming

  • Democracy and humanitarianism have always been trademarks of the British army.

    RUBBISH!

  • Michael Palin can look scary.

  • that soldiers trying not to laugh at 0:47 behind Eric Idle

  • Finest moment in the history of Colchester, this was.

  • i would march up and down the square xD (i rate 5\5 thou)

  • If all armies were run like this, there'd probably be a fair deal fewer wars. And those there were would be over quickly, or just be one or two angry drill sergeants.

  • "LEARNIN' THE PIANO?!?!?!?!"

  • — Rubbish!

    — Shh!

  • MARCHING UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU, EH??? XD

  • angry drill sergeant Michael Palin is the most adorable thing ever.

  • Every time I start a phrase with, "I had this little scheme..." it always manages to end up with "...of MARCHIN UP AND DOWN THE SQUARE!!"

  • Michael Palin's character kind of reminds me of the drill instructor of Full Metal Jacket. Although not as harsh!

  • jesus christ, his voice is so annoying :P

  • "Leaaaaarrrnnniinngggg thheeee ppiiiiiiaaanoooo!!!!!!!!!????!!!!?"

  • @bumpystumpy123

Bastard. I was about to write that so that I could get lots of thumbs up.

  • @bumpystumpy123 And I suppose you want to go practice, eh!!?

  • Comment removed

  • "Learning the piiiiiiiiano!!" lol

  • Compared to berets on the BBC now, these are pristine and the dog's danglies. Shame about the "sarge" . "there are three sarge's, massage, passage, and sausage. you fucking call me sarge again and I'll massage your passage with my sausage you slimey little fucker".

  • Scrubbing steps with a toothbrush, or, when a royal visit is expected, washing the pile of coal so it looks blacker and actually painting the grass greener (I kid you not), are not the hallmarks of humanitarianism! But what is Palin saying at the beginning? Sounds like "Haven't you ever seen the undergod before?" which if correct may have something to do with the pointing hand in the sky, but what, I haven't a clue.

  • @Hendrikdevuile

    "Hand of God", I'd assume.

  • @apsdil Yes, that must have been what he said, It seems a bit obscure.but adds to the surrealism, I suppose. Some men, used to get fallen arches because of having to stamp their feet so hard when coming to attention etc. Must have looked funny on their discharge papers when they were subsequently invalided out.

  • 18 people were suffocated by Hitler.

  • last line was the best bit

  • Depending on the Regiment or Corps in the British Army, three stripes and a crown can represent a rank of either: Colour Sergearnt or Staff Sergearnt or Quartermaster Sergearnt

He is never referred to 'Sergearnt Major' , whose rank is indicated by a Crown within a Laurel Wreaf on the lower arm and would, on parade carry a pace stick or swagger stick. A Colour Sergearnt etc would never.

  • @md0u9186 and not many of them would appreciate being called Sarge

  • @md0u9186 thanks mate but its not meant to make sense its meant to be funny....no need to get technical

  • Man, doing that voice has got to hurt...

  • @queenoftatters Lucky that Michael Palin is just brilliant at stuff like this.

  • LEARNING THE PIANO

  • democracy and humantarism always been the trademarks of the British Army......RUBBISH!!!!!!!!!

  • @uofksteel SHH!

  • Would you now???????????? LOL

  • love it

  • @ureq SHH!

  • PLAYIN' THE PIANO!?!??!?!??!?!??!?!

  • classic!

  • Never seen the hand of God before?

  • the english are bloody crazy, and I love that about them, lol!! (:

  • @EJLSWE Yes. Yes we are... :P

  • Being ex-military, I can remember marching up and down the square when I was in the Army. Of course this was during 1963-67, and marching up and down the square was very big with those in command back then. It was never as funny as this, nor were we ever given any options.

  • @romeoechomike369 Yeah? Well, with or without options (though I hadn't been in the army), I'd be reasonable enough to play along and join in this marching up and down the sqaure.

  • 1:13 - 1.31 hahahah awsome!

  • Thumbs up who thinks Michael Palin is the funniest guy on the planet?Cheers

  • Classic! :D

  • I love it at 1:30 when his hat almost flies off his head.

  • Noodlesoup1998 doesnt find this funny because:

(1.) Hes approximately twelve, possibly eleven depending on birth date.

(2.) Hes American, an uncultured one, so he thinks calling people "a fucking retard" and saying "Ooo my god" in a stupid idiotic accent is comedic.

    :)

  • in canadian air cadets the sergant's rank on his arm would have been flight sergent not just sergant :D Im so clever!

  • There's a logical explanation as to why noodlesoup1998 doesn't think this is funny. He was born in 1998. He hasn't developed a sense of irony yet.

  • 17 People Don't HAve Anything Better to do

  • I've seen this bit like 50 times. Will never not be funny! XD

  • "Well to be quite honest Sarge, I'ld rather be at home with the wife and kids"

    Real Response,

"Get to Jail you 'ORRIBLE CUNT!!

  • ...like you never seen the hand-o-god before!

  • "learning the piano?!!" omfg XDD
