how do you keep a straight face with Palin's face barely and inch from yours and him shouting "YOU WANT TO LEARN THE PEYANOH!!!?" with such ridiculous facial expressions XD
His kit is spot on, except he's a Staff/Colour Sergeant, is referred to as 'Colour or Staff', and then calls himself 'Sergeant Major' - If they were correct, this scene would be brilliant!
"RIGHT, OFF YOU GO!" the one right after the piano guy... Michaels hat bobbles back and forth perfectly right after he says it. Never notice, but it makes this scene just like his facial expressions do.
@Bisonrulz23 But if you look at the Cap Badge, you would see that he is badged Grenadier Guards. In that regiment, Sergeant Major is three chevrons surmounted by a crown.
@wikigeek That has me confused, He's wearing the badge of rank as what I recognise to be Colour Sergeant, but he's addressed as Sergeant, if he's a Sergeant Major, he should be addressed as Sir.. ah well, all abit of comedy afterall!! (The monty python sketch I mean!!)
Michael Palin is the best out of all the Pythons. He's also a very nice man. I met him March of this year and he was extremely friendly, signed one of his books for me because I do a TV show like his old ones, except mine's about GPS treasure-hunting. Can't wait to get another chance to see him, might ask him to help me march up and down the square!
You are right in more ways than one. As the rank of 'Sergeant Major' no longer exists, it was four chevrons. Sergeant Major does exist but as appointed. i.e. Squadron or Company Sergeant Major (All amrs or Infantry respectively). It is usually a WO2 however it can be a SSgt or CSgt during transition periods
@falcons1988 When was it four chevrons? I thought it was always a crown, and then Squadron/Company Sergeant Major was the crown with the leaves, and Regimental Sergeant Major was the fancy coat of arms-type thing.
I don't really know that much about army ranks, but I can tell you all about RAF ranks.
The four chevrons, was about 120 years ago and previous. Then it got and expanded. To what it is now, WO2, the crown and leaves and WO1 Coat of Arms type thing.
The thing is, this is really what quite a lot of really good cadet SNCOs are like. It's where the fun is. I mean, obviously its a bit exagerrated, but he's got the voice and the mannerisms down.
If all armies were run like this, there'd probably be a fair deal fewer wars. And those there were would be over quickly, or just be one or two angry drill sergeants.
Compared to berets on the BBC now, these are pristine and the dog's danglies. Shame about the "sarge" . "there are three sarge's, massage, passage, and sausage. you fucking call me sarge again and I'll massage your passage with my sausage you slimey little fucker".
Scrubbing steps with a toothbrush, or, when a royal visit is expected, washing the pile of coal so it looks blacker and actually painting the grass greener (I kid you not), are not the hallmarks of humanitarianism! But what is Palin saying at the beginning? Sounds like "Haven't you ever seen the undergod before?" which if correct may have something to do with the pointing hand in the sky, but what, I haven't a clue.
@apsdil Yes, that must have been what he said, It seems a bit obscure.but adds to the surrealism, I suppose. Some men, used to get fallen arches because of having to stamp their feet so hard when coming to attention etc. Must have looked funny on their discharge papers when they were subsequently invalided out.
Depending on the Regiment or Corps in the British Army, three stripes and a crown can represent a rank of either: Colour Sergearnt or Staff Sergearnt or Quartermaster Sergearnt
He is never referred to 'Sergearnt Major' , whose rank is indicated by a Crown within a Laurel Wreaf on the lower arm and would, on parade carry a pace stick or swagger stick. A Colour Sergearnt etc would never.
Being ex-military, I can remember marching up and down the square when I was in the Army. Of course this was during 1963-67, and marching up and down the square was very big with those in command back then. It was never as funny as this, nor were we ever given any options.
