  • Amazing how many fucking idiots on here just stare at his body as opposed to the incredible drumming. Shallow douchebags abound.

  • Wow, Halpern's a chubster here. He's lost quite a bit of weight.

  • Pedals? really the falcons?

  • Even the stack has a v neck

  • wow, matt lost weight playing these intense shows.

  • matthew fox.

  • cant stop staring at the lovehandles. jiggle jiggle jiggle jiggle, yea.

  • kick , snare , floor tom , 4 cymbals , you are the master men !!!!!! the best drummer that i see en long time !!!!!!! congratulations drummer my respects!!!!!!

  • lol muffin top much?

  • I Love the simplicity in his kit

  • lol matt put on some weight xD

  • Those crashes/rides...

    WHAT ARE THEY?!

  • @chickenbeforeegg Dream cymbals, couldn't tell you which lines though

  • @kurtthornley Fairly certain those are both energy line crash/rides. you can tell by the unlathed bells. I have one. they effin kill.

  • 1:03:

    >A wild crack appears

    >Matt Halpern uses Awesomeness level >9000

    >It's ridiculously effective!

  • @winnerbaby44 dude that cymbal had a chunk missing the whole time pause the vid at 0:07 u can see the ''crack'' it just slowly rotates into view the more he plays on it

  • Welp, looks like im going back to school for drumming.

  • 3:19 YEAHHHHHH BUDDDYYY

  • he makes that kit sound so huge. He can do more with a three piece than any of these new scene drummers can with 7

  • god damn matt halpern is so sexy on drums, smallest kit in metal

  • wow unique play style love it

  • Did they play in a higher tuning?

  • @xgrizzlyx93 yea insomnia is in drop C so they just played new groove in that tuning.

  • real pros can rock a small kit

  • New Groove and Insomnia drum view.

  • does anyone know what cymbals he's using?

  • @theused4lifebaby Dream Energy cymbals, probably a crash and a ride.

  • i love the way he grooves that right side crash, it looks so slick and gospel-esque.

    wonderful drumming.

  • Gospel chops. Ha you wish . Dude owns on drums fuck all haters

  • I can't tell what kind of foot technique Matt is using here... any help?

  • @ChronoGXay He's using his left foot and his right foot

  • Comment removed

  • @DarthRoy1292 - Obviously. (I don't think you understood my question.) I'll try to be a little more specific; I'm talking about foot technique such as swivel, slide, heel toe, heel down...

  • @ChronoGXay it doesn't matter what kind of foot technique he is using. just do the one that is feels most comfortable. and you still have to practice consistently like mad everyday to get it right to understand which 1 is the best for you. anyway check out my band on youtube - A Thousand- Carrying burdens

  • @blight4hire - I've been arguing with my professors SO much about "just practicing". lol The 'just practice, practice, practice, and your body will work it out in time' approach has SO many holes in it, and wastes SO much time... If you don't honestly understand the concepts you're trying to learn, you wind up in ruts that discourage you since many times there are fine details you may just not realize.

  • @ChronoGXay hmm, i never really understood anything, but when i practiced it repeatedly over the two years i started to understand alot of things and developed my own style

  • Guys. These are basic Gospel Chops... It's sad most Metal drummers don't know them. When you're brought up in a Baptist church, like me -- this is common.

  • @skarekrowkomplex This kid knows what he's talking about. Real chops are not found in this vid. Eric Moore, Aaron Spears, Ronald Bruner Jr, Tony Royster Jr, Thomas Pridgen...AND THE LIST GOES ON!!!!!!!!

  • @skarekrowkomplex what do you mean? gospel chops? since when do drummers play like this in church?

  • @dj3ntz Google Thomas Pridgen and Eric Moore II. If you grew up in a black church you would know what I meant. I'm not talking about the aggressive elements. They obviously don't chug and djent in church. This guy doesn't stick to the same generic fills. He uses different rudiments, various triplets. Not the same linear 16th note, TDWP/Attack Attack fills. You'll see what I mean.

  • @dj3ntz Like -- his style in some parts originated in the baptist church.

  • Yeeeaahhh... He knows what's up! Don't leave that snare cold for a second. A little drum slang for ya.

  • This guy is amazing. But for all who are like "Wtf is he doing", check out Eric Moore and see some REAL licks.

  • @sexypieceofmannipple Yeah, those are where the gospel chops are at...

  • @sexypieceofmannipple very true . well said. but don't start the comparison game LOL. once someone mentions joey jordison or travis barker all hell breaks loose

  • @blight4hire Yeah that is so true. I hate it when that happens, the whole "Man Travis Barker is better". Feel like cutting off my own ears and stapling them to my balls.

  • Holy six string New Groove batman..

  • How does he even know what he's doing at 3:20?!

  • i just dont get how to play such sexy ghost notes... :(

  • hey I notice you have add ghost notes inbetween all of your grooves you play. is there a specific pattern you're doing with your left hand?

  • I hope the camera is what's changing the key of the guitars to an absurdly ear-splitting high.

  • So why did they get rid of Alex?

  • @facedspaced Alex Bois? The muscles guy? They didn't get rid of him..

  • @facedspaced I apologize, I've found the info now. That's crazy. I wonder why they did that. :(

  • i love shepherd pies

  • @poppinawheelie Ludwig Black Magic with brass hardware I think.

  • Needs more cowbell

  • i love the way these cymbals sound, even through a camera's mic. Dream FTW

  • Niiice drumming. His style reminds me of Cato in Enslaved and maybe the drummer in Queensryche too.. Awesome

  • this video is for all those who spend thousands building a mega kit because they think you can't play progressive unless you have twenty toms and a metric ton of cymbals.

  • endless snare hits

  • lol how at 1:00 you can see that hench broken stack!

  • Needs more grooves and China

  • haha I'm so glad he got on meinl! This cymbal setup is hurtin':p

  • WTF just happened at 1:32? That was somethign good enough to blow one's high and send the brain into warp mode. I LIKE IT!

  • My favorite part is 2:39!

  • 3:21

  • if you haven't seen this video, here's a paper towel.... you'll need it.

  • @facedspaced Thank you. But I'm gonna need the whole roll if you don't mind.

  • I Spy me a TC electronic G system down thar!

  • are those crashes dream energys? i thought he was endorsed by meinl

  • @jamy313 on tour tho. anything can happen.

  • dude this is awesome! if you get a chance, CHECK OUT MY VIDEOS!!

  • The snare sounds delicious.

  • such a creative drummer

  • ....what a beast!!! love the fill at 3:19

  • who knew the guy from cash cab could tear a drum set apart like that

  • Tune! and amazing drumming man. Id kill for a band this good in my studio!

  • okay......first off. Just saw these guys for the first time at "The Underground" in Mesa....I'm now a HUGE fan. Second...when I saw them, I couldnt really see the drummer....HOLY FUCKING SHIT! he does all that with a 3 piece kit?????? AMAZING!!!! He is, in my opinion in the league of Danny Carey, and Brann Dailor....nuff said.

  • matt is the grooviest drummer ever!! i just cant stop watching this!

  • he does the coolest fills with just the kick. floor tom, and snare. What a beast

  • awesome drumming

  • poor poor kit. Matt is a beast !

In Paris the crash cymbal and the hi-hat both felt down

  • what the fuck omfg that snare's pop makes me wanna jizz

  • Holy fuck, he makes that drumset sound so big on the album.

  • Comment removed

  • @ZachiePwns He used a Roland TD-20 on the album. I prefer these Mapex Saturns though.

  • @iplaywithnoshoes The Mapex Saturns he's using in this video? Cuz he's not using Mapex Saturns in the video...

  • thats because they use Drumkit from Hell Superior on the album. Its programmed.

  • @jdanielweldon haha yeah right ya big tool. type in Matt Halpern and Bulp jamming on a new groove. theres that and the song totala mad. so your wrong my friend. and i know where they recorded at in maryland, definitely not programmed drums.

  • @jdanielweldon I don't think they programmed the drums. They definitely used superior drummer but I'm pretty sure he played the parts on an eKit.

  • @IwillPAWNu misha wrote most of the parts and programmed them using SD and, like you said, Halpern recorded them using a Roland TD-20 I think.

  • @jdanielweldon No, it's actually a Roland e-kit using S2.0 samples. He tracked the album.

  • Haha the fill at 3:52, what a beast

  • \mm/ too much rock for one hand!

  • fuckin amazing!!!!!! periphery love that shit!!!!

  • You'd think he would have an amazing drum kit...

  • @Stooeybear13 HE DOES

  • Im diggin the muffin tops!! Dude MATT DRUM FACES FTW!!!!!!

  • thumbs up for matt´s sexy "side-bellys" wobbling!

  • @fiintskadeva now thats all i can look at...

  • @fiintskadeva - Fatteh. lol ;-)

  • MATT HALPERN IS GOD!!!

  • he blasted off a chunk of his china cymbal thing in the middle of this. He really can break 3 cymbals with one swing of the stick

  • I'm SO glad meinl picked him up lmao

  • I find it pretty ironic that the best drummer in the world happens to play a 3 piece and all those other drummers with like 27 pieces can't do shit compared to this.

  • I love the fact that this dude is jamming a three piece kit! Just goes to show you don't need a massive set to make drumming an "instrument".

  • Holy shit ... those one handed ghost notes ...

  • Matt DESTROYS!! I bet those cymbals were brand new before soundcheck! :L

  • 3:20... oh my, I need a change of pants.

  • @facedspaced i completely agree

  • This goes to show that you dont need a million drums to be good. Look at his ride!

Has a fucking huge chip in it..

  • @imstrawberrywasted lol its not even a ride anymore, he put a china on it to make a stack

  • WTF IS HE DOING AT 3:26-3:36

  • @simenim Beasting ass! thats what hes doing

  • @simenim not 100% sure but looks like some gospel chops aka linear fills...youtube it

  • @simenim just being awesome, just being awesome kid.

  • @simenim He starts trading 2s in his hands with 1 in his feet, so he's playing 16th notes grouped in three and moving them around the kit, then he builds from there. Transcribe it, it's sick.

  • @simenim not your standard metal drumming fare, that's what!

  • @simenim GOD. DAMN.

  • @simenim amazing feel for grooving and executing it perfectly.

  • @simenim He's being Matt fucking Halpern. That's what he's doing.

  • @simenim filling

  • @simenim he's just being matt halpern

  • @simenim its called improv, a lot of good live musicians do it...

  • @ThisWouldBeMike LOL. HOw do you actually know if he improvised it or had it prepared? You read people's mind or what? Haha.

  • @amjan it doesnt even matter. matts a kickass drummer whos capable of improv. he can do whatever the fuck he wants.

  • @amjan If you look at his other vids, he says he improves everything.

  • @simenim going crazy

  • @simenim Being the messiah.

  • @simenim

    Being Matt Halpern

  • @simenim double time, i think =)

  • @simenim A badass drum fill. Blew my mind too. This guy is incredible.

  • @simenim I think only he knows

  • @simenim Seriously right? From 3:20-3:36 it's just madness. Snare, kick, floor and cymbals and he kills it.

  • @simenim being mat halpern

  • @simenim As a guess, i'd just say improvising in 16th notes but putting in random kicks and using a lot of substitution. If you try to do it, you can probably come up with something fairly similar but still, I think it's improvised so unless you slow it down in Audacity and study it for ages, you will most likely not be able to learn it.

  • @simenim - Everything. (just go with it).

  • @simenim playing his instrument i guess?

  • @simenim tripplets ....not hard just used in a really creative way...check out some gospel drummers ..they use those licks alll day

  • my favorite part has got to be laughing at the jiggling! hahaha but he is wicked good.

  • 3:18 wat. Matt needs to play gospel too.

  • @xandrewsmithx HAHA NO!!!!

  • after christmas my belly is going to wabble just like this!!!

  • Really encouraging to see someone play on a small kit to demonstrate you don't need 50,000 cymbals and 2999 toms to make good metal.

  • @funknotik i bet at home he has a huge ass Portnoy set, he is just lazy on the road. haha

  • I'd still like to hear a couple toms and doodads like splashes...But he absolutely kills it on a 3pc. I just dont think he has enough room for anymore due to the amount of guitar gear on stage, LOL! Anyone know what brand crashes those are???

  • anyone else notice the sizeable chunk missing from the china?

  • as much as the man moves around, you'd think he'd burn a few calories?

    i love matts style!

  • I want to give this man my cymbals, I feel so sorry for him

  • @erikattack hahaha dude i think he's okay now... that Meinl endorsement seems to be working out just fine. for those who asked, i think the crash/rides are Dream cymbals. he had a very brief endorsement deal with them before Meinl.... the stack is some sort of unknown cracked crash with a small Zildjian China Trash inverted on top... no idea what the hats are...

  • CALFS OF STEEL!

  • Love that he always fill all the empty spaces with ghost notes and stuff....

  • is that the joker on his arm? sick

  • this guy is officially my new favorite drummer, and damn that snare sounds good.

  • Gotta love them 13 inch Snares.

  • i love how he doesnt need a whole huge set up to be metal. thats just how good he is

  • @deathazoid seriously, thats one of my favorite qualities of Matt Halpern's drumming, he doesnt have a ginormous e-peen drum set, but he melts faces with the bare necessities

  • ive been aspiring to play like this guy for years and i never heard of him til about half a year ago matt halpern, travis orbin, and navene koperwise rule . but why do they choose to play on such small drum sets it bugs the fuck outve me imagine them playing on 7 piece kits with all kinds of cymbals

  • @breakinknucklesruler i think he could at least use another tom

  • @libertyspikes666 Why? Periphery is mostly bass and snare. It's not like he's blasting and rolling across 17 toms? That's just a dumb statement all around. lol It's what he likes and he shits on it.

  • @breakinknucklesruler They are doing this just to piss you off.

They prove that big kits are not necessary and that it is all about the groove.

  • @breakinknucklesruler i think they're trying to show u dont need all that crap. if i had a kit wit like7 toms and unlimited cymbalsthat would personally confuse the crap outta me lol u can make a small kit sound larger wit the right style

  • he is getting fat! haha

  • i honestly thought he had a much more advanced set from listenin to the album countless times i went as far as to actually imagine wut his kit looked like.....THIS IS NUTTIN TO WUT I IMAGINED. my respect for matt has increased so much now!!

  • @BADBOY131 he played a TD-20 for the recording, but nonetheless, its awesome to see drummers pull this kind of shit off with not that much to work with
