To any of the younger generation folks that might watch this trailer ... Even though this movie is from 1981 and you might think it's ancient ... Watch it !!! You'll be glad you did. A very, VERY good movie.
GREAT MOVIE,I WATCHED IT WHEN I WAS 8 AND I REMEMBER IT,SO WHY DON'T THEY MAKE MOVIE LIKE THIS ANYMORE?THE COMPUTER KILLED THE CINEMA BY CHOOSING THIS BULLSHIT THEY MAKE NOW.
@bandola09 they dont do it nomore cuz that shit dont fly no more ... dnt u c the movies cumin out right now..... i just saw the trailer and im never watchin this movie
and i knw its the best they could do but wats done is done and there's no need 4 that again :D no offense (:
@ajizzle4shizzle1 salam alikom, just tell what s good in these days movies?just lies and lies computer stuff thats it,you see people flying and jumping and thats not true.at least those days they had some good scripts and stories and thats why now the do lot of remakes. RAMADAN KARIM
@ajizzle4shizzle1 allah akram :D thnQ i wasnt talkin abt the weird movies im talkin abt movies with sum real stories like for instance off the top of my heaad... umm... The Pursuit Of Happiness - Will Smith one of the best movies ever
@ajizzle4shizzle1 real stories? this one hasn't much story and the major theme of it (or what it touched) is the american fear of that time "to be an enemy in the own country".
@Palpatine393 which proves my point , moves that r made these days arnt jst flying fictional shit , and the pursuit of happiness also talks abt how u should always keep goin after what u want no matter how many ppl tell u it aint go' happen :)
@ajizzle4shizzle1 so hope there will come better times again, or make your own movies no matter they tell you it will suck? :)) maybe a bit off the cuff, but i think the whole "go to the movies" experience and expectation has changed too much over the last years to make that possible. they just keep screwing them up. i was so bored by all this ridiculous gunfire in inception (most praised movie of this year where i am)
lucky me, i just saw southern comfort in cinema this fall
@ajizzle4shizzle1 real stories? this one hasn't much story and the major theme of it (or what was touching) is the american fear of that time "to be an enemy in the own country".
@bandola09 true. notice one thing about classic movies THEY DONT HAVE FUCKING COMPUTERS! THATS WHY YOU SHOULDNT REMAKE SOME STUFF LIKE PLANET OF THE APES FX'S REALLY HELPED THAT ABORTION OF A MOVIE!
@edgehead31593 One good ole' movie that makes the South look as good as it should is "The Santa Fe Trail" with Errol Flynn, Oliva de Havilind and Alan Hale. It's a old movie but real good. Check it out sometime! You will probably enjoy when John Brown gets hung, I know I did. :)
@edgehead31593 I didn't think this movie demonized southerners. If anything, the National Guardsmen started everything by firing blanks at the Cajuns. The Cajuns were just defending themselves and their homes. Being southern (and from Louisiana) myself, I think I'm fairly sensitive to stereotyping in movies. I didn't see it in Southern Comfort.
Other than the fact that their haircuts are all out of reg (I am a National Guardsman, and yes, we have to have the same grooming standards as Active Duty), I love this movie!
Agreed. in fact there are SEVERAL technical errors, Firing blanks without blank adapters, different Unit patches (1st Inf and 4th ID), Haircuts (stars back then were too cool to actually cut their hair to fit a part) not to mention the beard (omfg) Oh, did I mention the errant M60 discharge at the staging area? Really? This should be remade with Dale Dye at the helm.
I feel the trailer would have been perfect if they cut out all of the beginning monologue comparing elements of the film to Deliverance, Midnight Express, Apocalypse Now, (but keeping all that visual footage with the compass, etc intact with the score underneath it ) and let the guys voice start at "The bayous of Louisiana....."
The Cajuns are like French Americans...living in the swamps for generations. Some dont have telephone. Nice people...but dont upset them and disrespect them.
I'm from south Louisiana and we don't even have wild pigs. I was a teenager in the seventies and I have no idea where this could have possible in my part of the state. The film makers NEVER get it right. The latest fiasco was "Little Chenier". The only film maker to come close to getting it right was John Sayles with "Passion Fish". Rent it...watch it and forget the rest!
One of my favorite movies. I still wonder how it really ended. Did they get rescued or did the Cajuns get 'em? The exchange of glances has made we wonder all these years. The Cajuns could have hijacked the army truck, ya know?
One of the neatest parts of this movie was the the slide guitar music at the opening. Slow , creepy , then absolutely beautiful. Tha panning pics of the Bayjou. Bythe way everyone------------ This incident actually happened. My dad was stationed in AK back in hte 70's when an incident like this happened in a training excerise in lower Miss. -cept those guys were all killed. Everyone said it was poachers. love this movie
About the end: The truck in slow motion is supposed to make you think for a second its the bad guys coming, And then go "Aha!" when you see the star on it. Theyre saved, the army found them.
I never quite got the ending. Why slo-mo. Why did they look at each other in surprise? Why did it focus on the star on the truck? Was it all a test or something?
fantastic movie!! it always confused me as to why lots of people think the cajuns are the bad guys for retalliating after being shot at with a machine gun after their boats had been stolen!!reese also shouts abuse at them!! i must've watched it atleast 30 times over the years&never realised how much predator had ripped it off!.
well, they didnt have to kill all of em....the fact they are the army, and protecting their homeland shudda been enough to know they wud look after the boats...and im glad "stucky" died in the quicksand...a perfect fitting slow death, i hated the cajun with the gun, the one who said "my friends aint as nice as me" haha! if he spoke english, he wudda knew not all of them were against him..only 2...so the way he acted, was understandable, but irresponsible, shame coyote died so soon, loved da film
Whatever happened to Walter Hill? Back during the late 70s/early 80s this guys knocked out back-to-back genre classics like The Warriors, 48 HRS, Streets Of Fire, The Driver, The Long Riders...
walter hill fairly recently directed a mini-series for american movie classics called broken trail with robert duvall. i think he directed the pilot to deadwood. i know he directed one film, but had his name removed and coppola went in and finished it. it was a sci-fi movie with angela bassett, i believe. sorry, can't remember the title. i know what you mean...he just seemed to vanish.
great film. one of the best of the 80's. one of the best of walter hill. during it's initial release it was unjustly compared to 'deliverance'. this film is more of a metaphor for viet-nam.
I agree entirely with you JR. SC is one of the most underated films from the 1980's. The parody with Vietnam is subtley handled & very clever. IMHO SC is far better than 'Deliverance.'
thank you for the reply LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH. i think the critics have finally come around in favor of southern comfort and to the fans it has always had a cult following. check out siskel and ebert's review of the film from it's initial release right here on youtube. it is like they want to like it, but can't commit!
No thank you. Will not waste my valuable time.

This movie was just added to Netflix Canada and after watching this trailer, it does look interesting, even though the film looks outdated.
Nonetheless, I will watch it. :)

@gogdee Forest Gump is allright
about a mentally challenged man in Alabama you probably seen it.
but thats not a movie that makes the south out to be great either pretty accurate desciption of racism in america during the civil rights war era
holly wood is notorious for demonizeing the south makeing everyone out to be bumbleing idiots which dosent make for a very good plot to follow lol
honestly there arent many good movies about the south
there all full of hate

It may have been a metaphor for Vietnam but it tarred the Cajuns for a generation. A whole bunch of
Americans grew up thinking of the Cajuns as some backwoods primitive savages.
