No probably not, if you shorten the filament it will be more likely to work. Unfortunately 9V batteries just don't provide enough current most of the time. They work when they're brand new on really short filaments of nichrome like 1/8". The best thing I've found is to buy a rechargeable LiPo battery at a hobby store, they have way more power and are much more reliable.
@Rocketkid2121 Thanks i looked for "rechargable LI PO battery" couldnt find anything what voltage is it? what about this 12v one w.maplin.co.uk/12v-sealed-lead-acid-deep-cycle-solar-batteries-265437
@MANDELBROT27 That should definitely work, the LiPo batteries are just smaller, like what they use in RC planes and Helicopters. But a 12v deep-cycle battery will definitely work.
@SuperSoap100 I actually use those for a lot of things, but there's just something about everything working with the push of a button. And its hard to light the inside of a rocket motor with a lighter.
I first tried steel wool and i never had any luck, unfortunately a 9 volt battery doesn't have enough power to fire anything other than nichrome most of the time. However if you can find thin enough wire and are able to solder it so that there is a very short length of it it might work add a little bit of BP and it should work. Sometimes normal wire just melts instantly and doesn't ignite anything so nichrome is your best bet. I hope that helps.
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but if the first stage was underwater why thermite It's pretty difficult to ignite. I think if the motors I used were sealed until they were ignited they would definitely work underwater.
@Rocketkid2121 oh yeah i have launched my little B6-C's from in a bucket i sealed it with candle wax. but i just think it would be cool if the 1st stage had thermite through it for deeper launches, i want to do an Rcandy test with mg02 and thermite through the motor hopefully well enough so that it will ignite a good amount of thermite at once, burning in water it would create HHO and could, i stress could, give more thrust to the surface, i don't have much experience yet though
I have used these igniters on just about everything as long as the igniter will fit in the core of the grains it will work. They work well for APCP which is what I'm using in my other videos occasionally it doesn't work the first time because its relatively hard to ignite APCP. The wire running up to the nichrome can be just about any guage as long as it's not going to burn up before the nichrome. Any solder should work. I use rosin-core solder
I use 75% KNO3 15% homemade charcoal and 10% sulfur. I then put the in a ball mill that I made. The ball mill makes the biggest difference in performance. However the fine powder that comes out of the ball mill isn't very good for much other than igniters. To make it more explosive it needs to be made into granules of some kind . I mix it with alcohol and red gum and force the powder through a screen. I Hope that helps
Ebay is definitely the way to go I think you can get it from skylight too but it'll cost you about $6 for 10 feet and I bought 300ft for less than $30
I make my BP. Its not very hard to do but good black powder requires a ball mill. you might try substituting the BP with smokeless powder or some other pyrogen. I haven't tried smokeless powder but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
I'm not much of a fisherman, so all I know is that it's kevlar thread, I don't even remember where I ordered it from. For the ignitors though, you could probably use any kind of thread as long as it holds it together.
It depends. If you have a powerful battery it is almost instantaneous, but with a long extension cord it make take a second or two. Most of this depends on the length of the nichrome wire though; the shorter it is the faster it will ignite, but it will also melt quicker so it depends on what you're trying to ignite.
would this work with a 9v battery

where did u get the titanium sponge powder thing ???
the1091man 3 months ago
@the1091man You can order it from skylighter or firefox online. most fireworks chemical suppliers will have it. i don't believe its regulated either.

Nicely done! Igniters that work consistently is a difficult feet to achieve (from my experience).
I do have a few questions:
+What is the impulse range do you use this on?
+Are these for APCP motors?
+What kind of main wire do you use and what gauge it is?
+Do you use a special solder for Ni-chrome rather than "run of the mill" solder?
Thanks.

do you mean nichrome whire you could use steel wool instead its cheaper and work just as good.

giumarziano3 2 years ago
I got the titanium at a PGI conference but you can get it from skylighter or firefox

where else can i get it?? 'cause i live in italy and i don't think they would ship it here... maybe an hardware store or what?? thank you anyway! :-)
