Sounds rather tense and contrived, very much like the performer's facial expression which reflect a lack of convinction and genuine sentiment for the piece and more of a love of oneself for just playing it.
I have to say, though this is really the best interpretation of the piece I heard so far, something of this piece bothers me... On the one hand, it is beautiful, on the other somehow disturbing... I guess the harmonics seem quite banal to me....
Listening once again and ever a newly felt delight. BRAVO dearest Sandro. Do let me know when and where you will be performing. Much much love, Rose Marie
Liszt: Consolation No.3 in D flat major Known Be This Awakened Heart The coolness of morning dew upon leaf The gentle ripple of moving waters The caress of soft winds The feel of shimmering veils in sounds I hear The embrace of each piano key And known be this awakened heart. In loving gratitude, Rose Marie Raccioppi Poet Laureate Franz Liszt 1811-1886 Consolation No. 3
A very otherworldly sound, as if we're seeing through a window in time. The musician has immense control, and truly understands the intent of the composer. Isn't it amazing the emotional impact his skill has on those of us with ears to understand it and hear it?
@freethinker923 .... the sostenuto pedal came in quite some years later. When it did Liszt sanctioned its use for this piece [but one need three feet].
i dont think its played softly enough, and he doesnt sink into the chords, just my opinion, but take a listen to horowitz's interpretation and you'll see what i mean (its on youtube)
Fabulous interpretation of a wonderful piece on a awesome piano. I personally have owned a Bechstein "parlor grand" piano made in 1882 since 1974 when I purchased it while stationed in Germany. It has a wonderfully light action and the tone is absolutely bell like.....for some it may be too bright but for me it is uniquely beautiful. It is my prized possession and playing it a pure pleasure.
This 1862 Liszt Bechstein grand piano still has a beautiful tone. Bulow performed the premiere of the Liszt Sonata at Berlin in 1857 on a Bechstein grand. It would be very interesting to hear the Liszt Sonata played on this 1862 Liszt Bechstein.
I've got the newly released DVD of Sandro playing a few romantic pieces on this beautiful Bechstein Liszt piano. What a treat! I must say every single piece of music in that DVD is played with great passion.....so poetic. But I have to admit that Consolation No.3 is definitely my favourite. I've listened to Sandro's interpretation of this piece for more than 50 times now but it still touches my heart every time I hear it!!!
Yesterday evening I watched this video together with my dear friend Terry and I was totally from this world and she was my eyewitness. I just wasn't able to write a comment then.
Here I am again to tell you how impressed I am and how this piece by Liszt touch me in the deepest of my heart.
what a treat to listen to such a beautifully executed Liszt played on an antique piano...never heard of the tone of a piano like that. It makes me wonder if the composer has THAT sound of a particular piano/instrument on his mind when he composed a musical piece. Each instrument has its own character...
Kim and I enjoy this recording so much. You weave the melodies in a spellbinding way that's so hard to describe -- it's like the notes are really coming from far right, left above and echoing in the distance. Textures and colours mix together so poetically, with much artistry and sensibility, just sheer magic. I've heard it played many times, but never as beautifully as this.
Your commentary is so beautiful! It is indeed utterly impossible to know where to begin and end in approaching this breathtaking performance by Sandro. To have elicited this gossamer interpretation on a piano which lacks the dynamics and response of today's instruments is especially impressive. I've held my breath while listening, so fervent my desire to hear every last nuance. And, as you say, a hypnotic fascination to watch Sandro's hands in motion here. Warmest wishes to all, ~Terry
BRAVISSIMO,BRAVISSIMO SANDRO.
Sounds rather tense and contrived, very much like the performer's facial expression which reflect a lack of convinction and genuine sentiment for the piece and more of a love of oneself for just playing it.

Why does he have to make all those faces? Looks like a gay orgasm, kinda ruins the whole thing...

Fascinating to hear this played on a Liszt piano built only about ten years after Liszt composed the piece.

Does this old piano have a sustenuto pedal? It certainly sounds like it does.

That's a fine performance but I am not a big fan of these very old pianos. The sound is thin and hard to my ears.
