The IDF attacked Gaza not in order to occupy Gaza and stay there. If it would had done so you could have said that Israel "invaded" Gaza. The goal of the operation in Gaza was to retaliate against Hamas and other terroristic groups that launched 6,000 Kassam rockets on Israeli civilians for 8 years before that operation. Israel never intented to stay in Gaza after the operation.

If the Gypsies after WWII were allowed to return to the homeland of their ancient ancestors thousands of years ago in Northern India and build a new country of their own, say "Gypsyland". It came into existence in 1945 as an identity (or political tool) to fight off the Dutch invaders, at about the same time "Malaysia" and "the Philippines" came into existence. The Dutch cannot say, "There was never an Indonesian state/nation, so we have the right to take over this land." And we're very lucky we kicked out those invaders.
