What I don't understand is why the batsmen don't play him like a normal bowler. What I mean is: when he got a six for against India, three out of those deliveries were well short pitched. And the Indian batsmen were trying to play on the front foot and Sehwag even tried coming down the wicket? Surely if they play based on line and length and focus less on picking it, they would play it better. Those deliveries surely wouldn't have been wickets had the batsmen played off the back foot.

He's normally a steady player of spin, but to be caught on the back pad to a spinner... that's prett poor. Rohit's dismissal in the Asia Cup final was pretty comprehensive. If you've played cricket you'll know that he was playing the delivery as if it was an off spinner, he was completely beaten. If you look close he did not pick the carrom ball from the hand, so instead of turning it held it's line and moved away ever so slightly, missing Sharma's outside edge of the bat and hit him on the back pad. I agree it all looks so simple and batsmen are made to look silly.

If you have seen his wickets he has got lots of bowled and LBWs decisions because he got little and quick turn of the bowl. Mate faster and bouncier turf will make him so dangerous than this. In slow wickets at least it gives the batsmen some chance to react after bowl pitches on the turf. On faster bouncier pitch batsmen has to react fast and need to deal with the bounce as well. So watch out for more bat pad catches.

What's weird about Mendis' bowling action? He has 'a nice fluid action'? Mate conventional bowling actions where the bowler bowling arm is closer to his ear at the point of release - the whole point this is coached is to ensure the bowler remains accurate. Where have you been man? Type Ajantha Mendis on Google and then do the same search here on YouTube. He is now the fastest to 50 ODI wickets in just 19 games, previous best was 23 matches. He has the most wickets in a debut test series vs India. He was the ICC's emerging player of the year in 2008.

Sri Lanka does produce weird bowlers actions but 2 of those you mentioned murali and now mendis, Murali is the greatest offspinner ever and can be quite good at legspin when he properly bowls it and basically bowls an unplayable doosra (due to all of his deformaties which causes his action which some ppl say he chucks when your arm is straight bowling his is 15 or so % opp) and Mendis i dont really know that much about but he'll probably be the replacement for Sri Lanka when Murali finally goes

What I don't understand is why the batsmen don't play him like a normal bowler. What I mean is: when he got a six for against India, three out of those deliveries were well short pitched. And the Indian batsmen were trying to play on the front foot and Sehwag even tried coming down the wicket? Surely if they play based on line and length and focus less on picking it, they would play it better. Those deliveries surely wouldn't have been wickets had the batsmen played off the back foot.

He's normally a steady player of spin, but to be caught on the back pad to a spinner... that's prett poor. I think Gambhir played him better in the tests where he tried to attack him a little bit more.

Rohit's dismissal in the Asia Cup final was pretty comprehensive. If you've played cricket you'll know that he was playing the delivery as if it was an off spinner, he was completely beaten. If you look close he did not pick the carrom ball from the hand, so instead of turning it held it's line and moved away ever so slightly, missing Sharma's outside edge of the bat and hit him on the back pad. I agree it all looks so simple and batsmen are made to look silly.

There have been two bowlers in Test cricket who have bowled a similar style. The first was Jack Iverson, and the other was John Gleeson. Both are (were) Australians.
To bowl the doosra in this manner, you need enormous hands and long fingers. I look forward to seeing Mendis bowl in Australia soon!

I don't know about Iverson, but Gleeson was a fine exponent of the 'doosra', which delivered in this fashion is also called the carrom-ball.
Geoffrey Boycott was perhaps the first batsman to unravel this mystery ball by John Gleeson and he ended up scoring prolifically in the 1970 Ashes. Boycott himself said that all batsmen were clueless against Gleeson and it is a pity that Australian captains didn't use him as an attacking option.

I'd call him a 'carrom-flicking' spinner... I think when John Gleeson bowled that ball in the 70s Ashes, the English referred to it as the 'carrom-ball'. It is a great lost art of cricket that has been rediscovered.

His specialty is the variations he has. Currently he has 11 but only 6 been used so far. If you have seen his wickets he has got lots of bowled and LBWs decisions because he got little and quick turn of the bowl. I have seen murali beating the batsmen many times but fail to get the wicket because of his massive turn. And even it creates a doubt on umpires mind whether it is going to spin away from the stumps.

Mate faster and bouncier turf will make him so dangerous than this. In slow wickets at least it gives the batsmen some chance to react after bowl pitches on the turf. On faster bouncier pitch batsmen has to react fast and need to deal with the bounce as well. So watch out for more bat pad catches.

not really...the ball will not spin as much on faster and bouncier pitches..So instead of treating him as a spinner, the batsman would treat him as a medium pacer, and he would get smacked all around the stadium.

Obviously u havent done much of a analyst on Menids. Show me one wicket of his that he takes it with a massive turn? He takes wicket because he spins the bowl slightly and faster both ways with his variations and most of the batsmen had no time to react. Even on faster bouncer pitches I have seen part time spinners bowling with a turn. Even murali prefer faster bouncier pitch because the bowl turns quickly and bounce allot.

He has already played on bouncier pitches in Canada and Zim. Yes u might say now he didnt play against aussie. But the fact is those pitches didnt peg him back. Fast bouncier pitch doesnt mean it won't turn. That's why even clark and symonds is bowling. If they can turn I am pretty sure mendis can do it even btr. Its not matter of how much u turn its matter of outsmarting the batsmen. He has already done that to the best batting line up in the world consistently both in test & ODI format.
