Learn Indian classical music, at least one partially, you will understand ARR and his vision.

ARR usually compose based on various regions, culture and their taste.
If you know any classical, you can enjoy most of his Northern compositions, than his southern.
South Indian music is completely disoriented now, as there has been an ongoing power struggle between the classical and the folk/film artists for decades. Film music eventually kind of won, because of the density of its feasible popularity and the financial gain it can bring out, thereby leaving room for even some folk artists.
It is sad that the traditional classical music heritage has even been preserved in the Northern India and Pakistan, irrespective of their film music influence, while the South India is loosing its own traditional Carnatic music constantly to its local junk film music.
@vensub Why are you talking about ARR here. ARR is nobody on the map of IR fans. IR is the final authority and Nayagan can not be given by ARR even if he spends all his life.
ARRehman is generating music and it lacks depth. It is a pity that the Americans gave oscar to this JaiHo which is a shallow combination of sound generated out of computer software. Do not compare ARR with IR or MSV or Kandasala. ARR has to learn a lot from these people. Computer does not have brain and that is why ARR songs lack soul.
@vsanthosh4u -- you're wrong--I like Raja more than ARR. But a director and an musican must be in sync. Kamal works great with Raja. Harris with Menon. ARR with Mani. Maniratnam can make many ilayaraja alike but not a.r.rahman!. ARR is unique, nobody can even mimic his talent, he is a god's child.
Many composers in India tries to copy him, but nobody will be successful, i bet.
