Remarkably this does not look like that bad of a conversion. I've just recently discovered this game, I bought it off of eBay for the TG16 and love it! Very difficult and I was getting stuck in the castle so I watched your videos not realizing that you have to start the game by going to the left. Boy I don't think I ever would have figured that out. Great videos on this game thanks! I've been wanting to see the other versions as you have posted.
i remmeber this game it used to be fucking frustrating if i recall :D those stupid red spit things kept killing me i think, cant remember too well tho but I got a pang of irritation while i watched the red spit which indicates such.
ah yeah. that's the stuff. The music in the lynx version is so much better than the amiga. I seriously kicked ass at it when I was 8 years old: A + B allowed you to jump kick. i would use it often, especially on that green ugly cat mother to reserve my "powerball" - Oh yeah...!
Very cool to see how this game was translated between systems. The original Amiga version didn't have bats, or floating platforms and "Pitfall" vines in the underground stage :) hehehe or cobras!
SOTB was ported to so many different platforms it was unreal. Game play was different enough to be interesting on each platform. I just wish more games like Ballistix and Walker had been ported.
Interesting how each version of the game seem to have totally unique or at least very different level designs. Too much mario-esque platforming in this one though.
I totally agree with you. The Atari fanboys allways have to come up with arguments like this when they feel threatened. But i'll have to say that this machine was the best handheld in its day. Too bad that there wasn't many good games for it though :(
Either you´re an atari fanboy or you´re just retarded ! How could even an Atari lover make such a statement? The music is just awful in this version. David Whittaker couldn´t stop weeping when he heard this version. Who is this Tim Swan guy, who butchered the music, anyway??
This reminds me of the SNES version. It's like this is what they would have released for the NES, then Super Shadow of the Beast really would make more sense.
Atari made the mistake to release some crappy games on it. And the press just loved to bash Atari things even when they were good or even better than anything else.
The marketing team can't shoulder the blame for the Lynx's failure alone. In all fairness most of the games for the Lynx were pretty terrible. SotB is a great port but too short and too easy. It was still one of the better titles.
Thanks for the post. I haven't seen this version of the game in over a decade. :)
I must say this version looks impressive! Now I'm not fond of change but the level design and character attack pattern seems to have been slighlty rewritten improving the gameplay and the zooms in and out are very impressive.
The original Amiga version still rules on high though, because no matter how crap the gameplay was the atmosphere it created was immense as is the case with it's sequels but this seems to be a really good conversion.
I agree that the Amiga version is the most atmospheric. It looked and sounded very good.
Zoom or scaling on the Lynx is a hardware feature. It looks very nice indeed, but didn't take much effort for the game creators to use. So it's impressive to see, but coding wise it was peanuts :D
I have never heard a thing about this game but this music sounds kind of like the Game Gear soundtracks(Which sound HORRIBLE!). I can't believe they put voices in some of the GG games.
If they're any in these, then I'd hate 2 hear wat they sound like. Basically, I think the SG\MD soundtracks r MUCH MUCH better!
This is the Atari Lynx version, Ataari Lynx is a 1989 handheld, so it is actually very good compare that to gameboy with monochrome spinach color 4 grays display and extremely weak CPU..
cool music. anyone know where i can get mp3?

Please don't use Anti Aliasing - it kills the graphic

hey you cheated .. you activated the antialiasing of the emulator ...
r8qt7 3 years ago
It's not antialiasing, it's smooth upscaling. Looks like the HQ2X or HQ4X algoritm. And yeah, it muddles the hell out of the original graphics.

Probably because the final boss of the Lynx version is the exact same final boss that you fight in the SNES version of this game.

@babyrapor The SNES version remained unreleased though, so this is the only released version that had all these new features.

Don't forget the sega megadrive version! I had both the amiga and md versions and I find the second one more atmospheric and the soundtrack, darker!
