She was a nasty little girl--knickers indeed! I was there--it was electric--never been the same since--45 years playing rock and roll guitar--permanent damage!
I read that Bob Burns was the first Canadian announcer to interview the Beatles when they landed here in 1964. After the Ringo's glasses statement, there are two interviewers who briefly speak with the Beatles, and Bob appears to be the third (John Lennon, at least.) Who knows? Maybe the first two weren't announcers at all! Does anyone know who the first two guys were?
@Fooblestheclown yup! i never got the chance to meet him, too bad too, he was an amazing guy. last time i went to my grandpa's house he told me stories about him. he was my moms favorite uncle. rip uncle bob
Great video. Thanks for posting. We were in Winnipeg some time after and had to go out onto the airport observation deck to just be there & imagine the mayhem!. Nostalgic.
Yes, of course, Rob, both John and Bob clearly say Knickers...He was being playful, and did seem to catch Bob off-guard. It is like one of us shouting "panties" back then to see what reaction one might get.
Bob Burns: "how was the trip John" John: "long" Bob: "I suppose it was good to stretch out your legs" John: "among other things ...yes" HAHA! (poor Bob Burns)
I saw some other people on here commenting about John's "kinckers" comment. And just to put everyone's mind at ease, John was not a racist. I've seen a picture of The Beatles and Little Richard, seen footage of him playing songs on TV with Chuck Berry, and heard him talk about having black friends in an interview from '74. Plus, Billy Preston played organ on the Beatles' album Let It Be, and he was black. I think the interviewer just misunderstood what John said.
@TheYellowSubmarine13 yeah yeah....John said knickers ... big deal...just enjoy the rare video people ...and do NOT believe for a second that Bob Burns became friends with John Lennon after...total bullshit! (there must be another version of this video out somewhere...cuz I remember Paul and Ringo being interviewed as well)
If Bob Burns went to visit Lennon say on Dec 6 1980, at the Dakota and intoduced himself as the guy who interviewed him in Winnipeg back in 64....he would have called security, and have him thrown out.
Yes we all knew Burns had no relationship with Lennon. Years later on a CTV Winnipeg anniversary, Burns admitted that his ego hit the tarmack when Lennon said "That's not my fault" that Burns worked for channel 7 television.
PONYBOY I only posted this video for nostalgia purposes on a local TV station here .. not for you to give you or anyone political space! John Lennon said "knickers" (English trousers) and please do not swear or curse on my area - thanks!
kstatik - John says "knickers" (panties). I think the reporter did follow up with n-----. He asked John to speak Scouse (the Liverpool accent) but was too daft to understand Lennon. Wha a divvy!
the one fellow...stated that John and Bob Burns later became great friends ...which is an absolute joke...as I am sure John forgot about Bob as soon as he stepped back on the plane...and continued his flirtatious assault...on the flight attendants.
I agree. Burns was once quoted as being friends with John and meeting up with him when he went to England while managing the Guess Who....total Bullshit.
Years later, Bob Burns, in a CJAY/CKY anniversary interview, admitted he had an ego while talking to John Lennon on the steps of the plane. He said his ego hit the tarmack when, after Bob said "John, Bob Burns channel 7 television" to which John Lennon replied "Thats not my fault!" Classic! lol
no...thats great...it is a totally cool video ... its our only true link with the Fab 4 ...and thanks for posting....I am just in a little 'debate" with another gentleman. John was very entertaining in this video ... he seemed to need the fresh air. Bob Burns was nervous...and no match for John.
well I sure pissed off that "gullible gentleman" because he actually believes that Bob Burns was a Lennon friend. He even messaged me...with threats of slapping me out! HA HA, yeah....everyone who ever spoke to Lennon ...was a deep friend...yeah....well...mission accomplished.
The reporter Bob Burns became friends with John Lennon after brushing aside a man who lunged at Lennon in Toronto. He taught John how to bowl at 3am in the hotel using scotch bottles and grapefruit in the hallway. Burns also went on to become The Guess Who's first manager. He retired in St. Anne Manitoba and had original Lennon artwork on the walls from
his friend. I worked with Bob in the 80's and heard many tales....
bull fucking shit ....John Lennon and Bob Burns friends...bull FUCKING SHIT! John Lennon forgot about Bob Burns as soon as he stepped back on the plane!
so me proof...of this Burns/Lennon friendship - I mean....it could be true ....I mean, after all .... I was supposed to be the 1st man to walk on the moon...but I phoned in sick the day of the launch. (damn...talked about a missed opportunity!)
show me proof of this Lennon/Burns friendship! ( an article in a book would do nicely) It could be true....after all, I was was supposed to be the 1st man to walk on the moon...but I phoned in sick the day of the launch! ( I have really come to hate Neil Armstrong!)
KNICKERS - Liverpudlian slang for girls underpants. The word is used in a song as well. I Am The Walrus. "ooooo you've been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down" something close to that.
Are you asking what John said when he was signing the notebook??? It sounded to me like he said "This man's butting in while we do the interview. Don't worry about that."
I saw a tour intenerary of theirs a few years back that showed every gig they did from '63 to '66, and I believe they played Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver all at least once.
My sisters were running across the field from Park Royal beach wich later became Summerland in the 70's. By the time they got to the airport..the Beatles flew away...sad story.
John Lennon was going to visit Winnipeg with Yoko for Manpop back in 1970...a certain right wing radio station started a petition against them arriving.. as a result, they never did...guess which station?
Beatles stopping to refuel...August 18,1964...on their way to San Fran to start their 1st coast to coast tour of the US on August 19 at The Cow Palace..and ending in NYC on Sept.20,1964...
John is in good form .... probably had a couple scotch and cokes on the plane (the reporter is Bob Burns ...and he appears quite excited - as he blurts out some dumb things) A bit of trivia - the late Bruce Decker ran up the stairs of the plane at one point of this little visit (he was a member of the Deverons - Burton Cummings first band) Too bad that wasnt on video! KNICKERS!
I sometimes wonder what these guys think, with all the screaming going on for these four "schoolboys from around the corner". Great bit. John's in good form for getting off a long, wearing flight. Thanks for posting.
I am a winnipegger, and I didn't know this footage existed, although I knew the Fab Ones once touched down.
