@000032r its the weekend, time to relax & have fun!,, but i still gotta take a listen to this song .maybe to help with the loss or dwell on it...who knows..have a nice nite....tommy
This was the first song I ever heard Elvis sing in the late 50s. It reminded me of the time my uncle had to put our family dog, Sport, out of his misery because of a serious injury. My uncle raised him from a pup and loved him like a best friend. It was the hardest thing he ever had to do. He was in his 20s and I remember how he cried...and how I cried as well. That was over 60 years ago and I still haven't forgotten that deep sadness.
@jagmanitoba A family friend had a dog that was poisoned (we still don't know who), and there was a horse that was shot by some jerk who had a domestic flare up with the owner. A pretty wretched world when people take their anger issues out on animals like that.
My grandfather came to Canada in the early 1900's. They stopped at Beaubells to wait to cross the border. Sometime while they were waiting to cross, his dog Shep(that really was his name)"slipped his noose" as my father put it, and escaped. They couldn't find him when the train was leaving so left him behind. At the next stop, I want to say 20 miles later, a bedraggled Shep caught up and as dad put it, "that's how Shep came to Canada!".
have a beautiful american boxer 12 yrs old had him since 3 months we have grown old together. im now ill so is he. i love him we will go together.he cant live without me nor me him without him. hes my ole shep.
i'm here after this song was on family ties...the dad played record, alex (michael j fox) didn't see he point in getting emotional over the song but then upset, he yelled' THEY KILLED HIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this video. I think the pictures of Elvis as he was growing up were special. Also we can listen to his voice at a youg age and know it was great. To all peeps who had an old Shep....had one too. It really is astounding how Elvis did touch so many people througout his life.
My dog just got murdered by a hit and run driver and I remember my Mom and Aunt playing this song when I was a kid....and it floated thru my mind as we buried my dog in the yard where he used to roam......
@saramaree13 Hi, my name is Jullie, my 1st dog was with me 4 13 yrs but i had 2 take the awful task of putting her out of this world as she was so poorly. Now hav another Cocker aged 1. Take care.
i didnt know this was a true song bout foleys dog bein poisoned, i hope they hung the killer & his kids!! this song stays away from the detail, cause elvis said he couldnt do it, then old shep was dyin by his side. im sure the original writing was different, now let the ol man cry! col tommy parh of atlanta
My Mum told me about her childhood dog, a wonderful one called Sheppie. He lived until he was 15, when he went blind and was put to sleep. She didn't stop crying for several days. My Nan and Grandad still speak of him fondly as well, and he was so much like Old Shep.
@sega071 haha, I always feel bad when I listen to this song... I always end up laughing because all I can think of is Del slipping that load of christmas carollers some money to sing this after he gets dumped...
I always remember my brother with this song. When I was at school back in the 70's our grandparents dog died on the day that we had my school sports day. My brother stayed home (he was 12 years older than me) & said he listened to this song over & over. The dogs name was Goldie, but the sentiments were the same. I lost my brother just over 4 years ago but no matter when I hear this song, it is him & Goldie I think of! God bless you both!
This song is one of my favs, but does remind me of a time long ago when I heard it on the radio, only to discover when I reached home my dog had died. I always shed a tear for him an this song...:(
I defy anybody not to have tears rolling down their cheeks when they listen to this for the first or the five hundredth and first time-such emotion and feeling-no wonder Elvis was and always will be THE KING!!!!!Long Live ELVIS
my dog died a few years back....i went around a friends house for a night of ale etc, you know, to cheer myself up......but, knowing i'm an Elvis fan , my mate decided to put a bit of king on the record player......this song came on and by the end of it i was crying like a baby lol...mind you, so was my mate.....long live the king.
We have to put our 7 year old cat down Friday. She has kidney failure and we can't stand to see her suffer any longer. She's not eating, she can't get up and down off the bed, she can barely walk. She helped my husband through several spinal surgeries. She gave him reason to get up moving when the pain was overwhelming. I love our baby and can't think of life without her, but she is beyond help or healing. Goodbye, sweet Toothless!! Mommy loves you!!
Thanks for the memories. My father used to sing this song all the time whenever we were on a family trip. My sister would always be in tears before he finished the song. I never knew who actually sang it and haven't thought about it in years.
@molliech :-) Only no nose job is necesary in man- man is BEAUTIFUL as long as he is just a little bit better looking than devil (as mine mama says.... :-)
This song, together with Forget Me Never, are among the best songs that the King ever sung. His voice and technique were at the peak. By the time he started singing in Las Vegas, he was already downhill, but unfortunately, his image and the songs he sang during that period were best known.
I have an old record of this song, an old 45 or whatever it was back then, but I've never seen these pictures before. Thank you for showing me pictures I've never seen.
I never heard the song or that Elvis sang it. Yet who has not heard the joke "You know what they did to Ole Shep dontcha?" The song reminds me of the love from my beloved black and white border collie Sherri 1994-2000. MOMMY MISSES YOU EVERYDAY. ThankYou for posting.

here is a strange story i used to play this song on a album called elvis 40 greatest hits on an old cheap record player.30 years later i had a vivid dream i was in the same room crying my eyes out at this song looking down at thiselvis record with the yellow label i remember details in this dream that i forgot. it was so realisitic and when i woke up it so sad that i thought that time will never come again.
My 2 Uncles were tragically killed in 1958 and I never knew them. Just recently I have met some of their friends who advised me that this was one of my Uncle David's favourite songs. I now know why. Absolutely beautiful
this is a fantastic song reminds me of my gran and grandad as they went to gracelands for there ruby anniversary does any body know where they can by elvis the movie with kurt russell in it
Am 47 but just cried hearing this again. My Grandad who was in the both big wars used to love Elvis (unusual fo that age) and as a treat he would let us listen to this song before we went to bed. I remember saying "Grandad, can we hear Old Shep". No one else could have sung it like that. God bless Elvis (and my Grandad). X
I'm retired now , but when I was working I came into my office on the odd occasion and I used to sing this with a cupof tea in my hand. My colleagues used to love it, God bless 'em.
Played at my uncles funeral last year and my other uncle died last year he had my way and was going to have teddy bear! They were both great Elvis fans ! Now its just me and my nan who are Elvis fans in our family :'( xxx
Are you serious? Elvis recorded this song at a very young age......before he became international. Can reccomend many non commercial songs...like...Lovin'arms
Yeah, he did win 5th place. I was raised in Tupelo (his hometown) and my wife actually used to live down the street from where his birthplace now sits.
Even before I had my dog I jst loved this !My lovely cocker spangle Gemma was with me 4 13 years and grew up with my lovely daughter who is now 27.She was a lovely dog and I hated to be with her when she died but She could not go alone .. Never had another dog by the way. Gemma was the one and only.!
I downloaded this video 3 weeks ago (see comment) and just have to keep replaying it - the photos are fantastic, and so well arranged. It all seems so simple to do, but its not; lovely stuff.
great pic's -nice tribute-always the king -my only dog, bess - 1970-1980- always comes to mind -always thought of a jack russel type when listening to this in the '60's /70's -probably still will not a gsd, but always think of a young impressionable elvis with a silken voice, nothing like it before or since
My dad us to sing a nd play this song for us when we where little and make us a cry everytime and as the years went by we had him sing it for his grandchildren and great grandkids it is a fond memorie of our dad. Such a touching song.
Who else but The King could pull off a song like this with such heartfelt emotion. The pictures are pure American Gothic, one of a kind, the likes will never be seen again.
There will never be a story like Elvis Presley's again. So much talent and so good looking. From what a hear, just a great guy too. I was along for the whole ride also. Great post!
This was my introduction to Elvis at a tender age.. My scary Grandad was a big fan and when we stayed with him and Grandma in the 1960's putting this song on was a bed time treat. He loved that we loved it and it brought us closer. Only Elvis could bring you to tears every time. Beautiful. "Old Shep please Grandad"!!
No one will ever be able to sing this song like Elvis.... this man had a God given talent .... what an awsome song SAD but awsome it brings back some old memories...
This song has to be ranked as one of the top ten sad songs of all time. I feel like crying everytime I hear it. Especially the way the King sings it. I still miss Scooby a lot. He left me last Aug.
My best friend..."Oscar" an English Bulldog just got hit and went to doggie heaven on Tuesday..April 21st, 2009...Dave, Patty, and Adam loved him so much and we wil miss him Dearly! "Oscar get off the couch!" lol
I'm so sorry. I lost my Scooby last August. It's so sad because if you've had a pet for so long and then passes away, it's like losing a family member. I feel for you guys.
Happy birthday Elvis! What a legend ♥ never forgotten!! :') my uncles song this was <3

I downloaded this video 3 weeks ago (see comment) and just have to keep replaying it - the photos are fantastic, and so well arranged. It all seems so simple to do, but its not; lovely stuff.

best album ever-rock'n' roll no 2
great pic's -nice tribute-always the king -my only dog, bess - 1970-1980- always comes to mind -always thought of a jack russel type when listening to this in the '60's /70's -probably still will not a gsd, but always think of a young impressionable elvis with a silken voice, nothing like it before or since

GOD. Anyone who had their best friend die, or had to put them down, understands this particular feeling which Presley conveyed with perfection.

Who else but The King could pull off a song like this with such heartfelt emotion. The pictures are pure American Gothic, one of a kind, the likes will never be seen again.

This song has to be ranked as one of the top ten sad songs of all time. I feel like crying everytime I hear it. Especially the way the King sings it. I still miss Scooby a lot. He left me last Aug.

I'm so sorry. I lost my Scooby last August. It's so sad because if you've had a pet for so long and then passes away, it's like losing a family member. I feel for you guys.
