This was the first song I ever heard Elvis sing in the late 50s. It reminded me of the time my uncle had to put our family dog, Sport, out of his misery because of a serious injury. My uncle raised him from a pup and loved him like a best friend. It was the hardest thing he ever had to do. He was in his 20s and I remember how he cried...and how I cried as well. That was over 60 years ago and I still haven't forgotten that deep sadness.

My grandfather came to Canada in the early 1900's. They stopped at Beaubells to wait to cross the border. Sometime while they were waiting to cross, his dog Shep(that really was his name)"slipped his noose" as my father put it, and escaped. They couldn't find him when the train was leaving so left him behind. At the next stop, I want to say 20 miles later, a bedraggled Shep caught up and as dad put it, "that's how Shep came to Canada!".

I always remember my brother with this song. When I was at school back in the 70's our grandparents dog died on the day that we had my school sports day. My brother stayed home (he was 12 years older than me) & said he listened to this song over & over. The dogs name was Goldie, but the sentiments were the same. We have to put our 7 year old cat down Friday. She has kidney failure and we can't stand to see her suffer any longer. She's not eating, she can't get up and down off the bed, she can barely walk. She helped my husband through several spinal surgeries. She gave him reason to get up moving when the pain was overwhelming.
