ole Oscar he is a good man i use to work for him back when he owned a campgroung in cave city "singing hill's" was the place that man was a hard worker as old as he was he would get out there and work his ass off everday and always saying something funny
<cont... old then. He was a cute old guy - bright green suit, pants too short, paint specks in his glasses... I asked Lonzo why he was younger and the 2nd banana, yet had first billing. He said he was the 3rd 'Lonzo'...
Amazing that he is still playing today! Good to hear.
Shock and Awe? Horror and Amazing? Incredible musicians coupled with side-show humor??? So great to be able to see these Americana moments from the past! A cable channel used to run this(?) show at times, maybe 10 years ago, and I was quickly drawn in, when I found it.
I used to be in an old time band. Once a year, we'd play this bluegrass festival WAY up north, 7 hr NW of Winnipeg! They had some old country acts too - the first time I saw 'Lonzo and Oscar'. This was in 82, and Oscar was ...
I really love this footage. Watching this excerpt over & over .. I am strongly reminded of the very similar comic style of the legendary duo Cousin Jake & Uncle Josh (Jake Tulloch & Josh Graves) - who were members of the famous Foggy Mountain Boys, on the Flatt & Scruggs "Grand Ole Opry" / Martha White / Pet Milk TV series, from the 50s & 60s. I don't quite know which of the 2 acts came along first .. however, I suspect it was Lonzo & Oscar here.
"There was Lonzo & Oscar, a poppin bubble gum .. George Morgan singin 'Candy Kisses', yum-yum .. got a hole in my pocket, bringin in that Georgia Mill .. we'll sing 'The Sunny Side of The Mountain', and dance to The Chicken Rill" ... (from "The Grand Ole Opry Song", by that legendary cut-up performer, the great Jimmy Martin). This is classic footage. Thank you .. a superb post !!
@rexella Cousin Luther is Steve Logan. Mr. Logan partly owned and engineered at a Nashville Recording Studio (Music City Recorders) for many years. Mr. Logan passed away roughly 10 years ago and the studio is now known as Studio 19.

Both Lonzo & Oscar, who were brothers in real life, began in the early 1940s playing with Eddy Arnold's band. On some of Arnold's earliest records, you can hear Oscar playing rythmn on the mandolin. The original Lonzo was Ken Martin, but Johnny Sullivan--the guy in this film--replaced him in the late 1940s.
Cousin Jody was the original dobo player with Roy Acuff in the 1930s, and was replaced by Oswald.
