  • I wonder how many people in the audience know who wrote this song? Elton John wrote some f'ing great songs man!

  • Beautiful cover!

  • Great cover. They really owned it and made it their own. Wish I could hear the bass....but it's live.....

  • This is awesome.

  • Was looking to play Elton's '75 Wembley version of this song. Tremendously surprised to find this song covered by anyone. Tremendously surprised to find AIC covering an Elton song, especially this one. Nice cover. Saw them in '92 opening for VH front row in Tally. Make no mistakes, I was there for VH. This was a great cover.

  • RIP Mike Starr

  • I miss MIKE!!!!

  • Hats off to AIC for covering this absolute classic. With the new Elton album The Union with Leon Russel i expect more artists and critics will recognise the great man's work and influence

  • I like your video. Good work

  • Hahaha The drummer was playing rock paper scissors in the background. Hes a badass.

  • anyone know that second chord Cantrell is playing? A7 TO ? then D

  • Who da thunk!!

  • Iggy as in Iggy Pop? Iggy and the Stooges Iggy?

  • GREAT COVER OF A GREAT SONG.

  • This blows me away! To me, this has always been Elton's most beautiful song and to have AIC play it is fantastic. Jerry - you are AMAZING! Bravo...

  • @tdevine7 I wonder how many audience members knew the song? I'm sure some did, but some probably didn't. That is why I think that its ashamed that some of the classic LPs such as "Captain Fantiasic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy", get little airplay, even on FM radio. In the 70s, FM radio played entire albums, and it helped to boost sales. Kids today should have grown up in the 60s and 70s!

  • well done on a great cover, a pleasant surprise to hear you play this. I'm sure would think the same as well

  • Really cool

  • Wonderful!

  • I saw them play this acoustic in Vegas. It was an amazing show.

  • note: actual song doesn't begin until 2:09

  • omg! This is one of my most favorite songs! I am E.J. all the way! They did a stupendous job! I was impressed!

  • Ditto!

  • I think, one of Elton's best songs. Elton would be very proud of Alice in Chains version. They rocked it.

  • excellent version guys!

  • I think it's awesome that a grunge band would tip the hat to the likes of Elton John. He influenced countless musicians. They just don't as readily admit it. Good backing vocals.

  • Jerry Cantrell lists EJ as an influence. If you're familiar with Zakk Wylde you can find him doing a cover of "Candle in the Wind" also.

  • And this number happens to have that minor thing goin' on that fits right in with AIC.

  • Not only the grunge, but the old punk too. Remember the hilarious story of Iggy Pop and Elton in the gorilla mask... that's hilarious, but shows they were close.

  • What story? I wanna know.

  • Iggy was high and Elton was going to do some prank in a gorilla costume (I don't remember why) during the concert, but Iggy thought he was halucinating and tried to kill "the gorilla". Iggy is small, but was fierce, so I guess we're lucky to have Elton around, lol

  • i'm sorry but I didn't like it very much ! =P when the "power-section" should have come, it didn't happen much, besides the drums .. ! hmm .. ! and the outro is horrible !

  • Ur nuts you just dont like alice in chains face it..But you can what you want this is as good as it can get to the original

  • well, really I've just heard this with Alice in chains. And I really don't want to be rude but it isn't very close at all to elton's original verision. I love that version, and this .. I DON'T love ! But, they ain't bad, not saying, but this song wasn't good !! that's all !

  • yeah well your only one person..Someone always has there own say which is good I guess, but I dont see any band that is better then the original alice in chains though..Well maybe two zeppline and Floyd

  • you know it was an acoustic concert??? i think it was perfect..if u were there it feeled the room with every song they play making it more than life...love aic .peace for okc

  • I hate duvall usually, but especially on the harmonies, man... my spine tingled and when I close my eyes I can still feel layne in their music. :(

  • Does anyone know what year this took place? I am assuming LS had passed?

  • August 2007 at Cains Ballroom, Tulsa, Oklahoma ;)

  • They shouldn't have played on w/out LS, but shit, that is a kick ass cover.

  • i was there man...best concert ive been2 in awhile and ive seen greats such as paul mccartney...seen them twice last year hope they come back soon

  • October

  • 2007

  • wow! my most favorite song ever... great to hear it covered by a great band and still appreciated after all this time!!!!

  • Man the show was amazing. I am one of the luckiest people in the world since I got to meet all of them. Such great guys.

I remember when I was on sidestage, watching them come out. As Inez was walking to his seat I showed him the rock-on sign and he pointed at me with a smile. AiC for ever!

  • At the first when Inez came out he pointed at me while I was on sidestage!

  • Def woulda been cool to hear the "Nigel" dynamic builds on drums. Those thumping toms just made it. But I dig it, so cool to hear obscure classics like this. I kno Jerry was a big fan of Davey Johnstone, Eltons axe man back then.

  • Haha is Sean playing Rock/Paper/Scissors with Mikey?

  • I'm impressed that anyone would do this great classic. One little stikly poin though: It's WHEN summer burns the earth again, not TILL. By saying TILL it kinda indicates that he doesn't really understand about the fundamental meaning of the song: basically that its time to move on and you can't go back.

But all in all, amazing to hear those awesome lyrics.

  • great harmony, great job. Really. One of my all time favorite elton songs. These guys covered it okay. I miss Nigel's drums though.

  • holy shit i was there haha i wouldve been in the front but a fight broke out so i was in the bleachers during this song haha woo

  • How could any fight at a Alice concert, when I saw them the two times I never saw happier people in my life, but your lucky you guys got a private show like this

  • well there's no elton version of this one on youtube so this is already something

  • the guy does not even begin to touch Layne...I've seen William twice with the "new" AIC twice and he never got close. Plus he dresses like a pansy (scarves, velvet pants) He also wasn't that good when I saw him on Jerry's tour in 2001. AIC should change the name out of respect for Layne.

  • I like Duvall, but I think you are right, they should change the name now that they are touring again. I never knew he played with Jerry on the 01 tour?

  • You haven't seen them live. Don't lie. Stop talking.

  • o.k, but the original is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Do see Alice in the Cities.

  • I disagree, As a big Elton John fan, I think this cover is fantastic.

  • I agree with you. I love Elton John and I think Alice in Chains did a great job with this song.

  • I also agree it's a great cover. I love Elton John and the song Curtains. I never would have thought anyone could have done this good of a job on it.

  • i was at this show2...tulsa,oklahoma..freakn fantastic. aic is the best show i'v been to in years and jerry rocks.

  • I was there. Only thing I can say is amazing, Absolutely amazing. Long live AIC.
