I kinda of have to ask too, what is the difference between downloading a movie and taping it with your VCR/DVD/DVR? I didn't even know this was illegal, it turns out actually it is, but no one cares, if you were watching a movie you taped with a cop, he won't slap the cuffs on you, and cops even do it themselves without consequence.
Though, Chris is kinda wrong about the coffee example. You can't copyright food! Well, not the type of food anyway. No one could legally start selling their own big macs, but McDonalds can't stop people from selling and making Hamburgers!

I honestly think it depends on what you're pirating, and particularly how much it costs. Companies like Adobe are just asking to have their software on every file sharing site at their rates. If companies charge very little for their software then people are far less likely to steal it. And then you gotta consider the fact that if they wouldn't pay for it anyway, then it's technically not a loss to the companies.
Ummm, how about this we don't all have cash stuck in our asses.
I can't afford to pay Thousands of dollars every year just for software, music, and movies. We need it for more important things like college, food, housing, etc.
Bitch please, you probably pirate gay porn all the time.
"As long as they are going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade."—Bill Gates
Okay, Piracy =/= Theft. A theft is having your car stolen; the car is no longer in your possession against your will. Piracy would be your car being taken, but the original is left unchanged in your driveway. Also? To respond to your question, if I were a dev, and people were pirating my software, I'd be proud and find a way to capitalize on it. Look at Stardock with Sins of Solar Empire.
What if you make a free copy of the shitty version of your coffee, then somehow decide it's worth FIVE HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS, or more *Cough* Fl Studio *Cough*... People are going to see it isn't worth it and find out how to make their own free copy.
i think it's a lot easier and faster to get a cracked copy than to ask the company for a free copy. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably doesn't have much experience in warez :-D
Copying isn't stealing. If i could copy matter and make a mercedes benz. I would. But wait? Could Mercedes sue me for reproducing their car even though no loss or gain came from them? Hmmmmmm.
wait wait wait, the big question is, why are companies producing computers with the proper tools to by offering faster pc's, cd/dvd record-able disc, and burners. if they wanted this to be safe than they shouldn't started this at all. So it's not are fault, it;s the companies fault that started it all so they have someone to blame.
If that's what I should do, then I don't see the harm in pirating software I never would have bought in the first place, like fucking Photoshop CS5. An excellent program, by the way, I suggest you guys try it out.
you know who's the pirates here, the guy selling call of duty 15 for 60 dollars + 20$ map packs and 60$ duke nukem forever
I still love gaming, but this is just becoming piracy, i bought call of duty already, im not going to keep buying the same game over and over again for huge amounts of money, and its not just CoD its almost every game and software now
Also, I pirated my fair share of shitty xbox 360 games, and let me tell you, I was so thankful that i didnt shell out 65 bucks for those games. That is why i pirate and save my own money. Same goes with movies as well that are mostly shit nowadays. Lets put it this way, I pirate because its there for free, like 20 bucks you find on the sidewalk. Chances are I wouldnt even have bought 90% of the stuff i pirate anyways, so its not like I'm really taking away money from the companies/developers.
piracy is amazing, perfect for poor people that cant afford the actual product/program. If you are a college student making minimum wage, and the things you want are available for free instead of hundreds of dollars, naturally you are going to save your money and pirate. It's pretty much common sense, especially since the markup on these products is ridiculous and some aren't even worth a fraction of their actual retail value.
If u want to give a valid rational answer, riddle me this:
A guy from the East European Country ROMANIA wants to buy an Xbox360 game. The average income in Romania is more than 7 times less then that in the US and also XBOX360 DOES NOT OFFER ONLINE SUPPORT for Romania. In addition if u want to get a pre-order bonus you have a 1% chance to get it.
So, would an American pay over 350$ for a game he couldn't play online and for which he would not get any benefits. I don't think so. YAY PIRACY
Moral issues aside, there's the whole problem of malware: If they're smart enough to circumvent the piracy protection measures put on the software by the original vendors, they're also smart enough to gang up with some other Internet baddies, and get paid for including some spyware in the package or the crack for it...
@AssemblerGuy Already solved, it's called Magnet Links in relation to Torrents. It scans a file entirely, and creates a completely unique code for that entire group of files or individual file. @sillychicken599 no no no if it was made by apple it would have been this
"unable to load Photoshop becasue your not using iMac. if you are using your iMac then please make sure that your internet connected via iPad on O2. if you are doing that please contact appale from your latest iPhone"
"you are not using photoshop to make a picture of your new iPhone... ERROR!"
And one thing to say -- Having over 100,000 subscribers on Youtube and being well known on the internet != any other individual with a failblog.... (not the REAL failblog) So, yea.... no....
If I'm interested in a piece of software, I'll pirate it and see how good it is. If it's really good, I'll probably buy it. Unless it's Microsoft.
But eh, I don't really do that as much anymore because now I use Linux.
Also you're just copying software, not stealing it, because you're not removing the original. It doesn't really justify it, but it's good enough for a lot of people.
Okay this is what piracy laws are stupid let me break it down to you :
Stealing: Is when you actually go to the company itself and steal the software.
Sharing: When a person actually buys the software, cracks it, creates a keygen for it and then distribute it to the Internet for everyone to use how the hell is it stealing!!?
The more copies of a good thing exist, the better it is for mankind. So do a favor for mankind and share your software with someone or make it shareable by cracking.
In my opinion, software should be sold to larger corporations or businesses, because the normal everyday people pirating it are not going to make an impact on the company.
I also find it to be bullshit that a company wants to sell a product to regular citizens for 700 bucks (Adobe), when all that person may want to do with it is skin a web page.
All software should have a free version; not enough people know what they're doing with this technical thing. Really depends on what you use it for.
it must be easy to preach anti piracy when the software companies are fucking funding your life and sending the shit to you for free. what a crock of bullshit.
@superman83kg Not avalable anymore, law came up 1 week ago. They will pursuit all those who download just as they do with those that re-sell the products...GOD DAMMIT!
ESET Smart Security is a very very very good antyvirus, anty spyware and has a very good firewall but all of that comes at a pretty big price. So, I go on their page, download the free trial and them make it a full version by getting a key from not327,net.
we have the right free information and evil corporations who are exploiting hard working software developers and treat them like dirt deserve every penny taken from them so like a lame movie once said hack the fuckin planet cause this is the new frontier and its up for who ever seeks it pirate educational software not movies and music dont wast your time with brainwash
The car metaphor has always bothered me. If we could download/copy cars, that would "drive" down the price because the car company would just copy the "master car". No pun intended.
I am a software developer and I support piracy. It's criminal that only a small percentage of the profit goes to developers when developers are the ones who do 99% of the work.
If you have the opportunity to get pirated software, DO IT, but donate some $ directly to us because the ones that actually made it. We have worked hard through school to be were why are. I think we deserve it. Besides the rich executives from MS already have tons of cash,it wont hurt them.
heres a good way to slow down software piracy: Ask a fair price ! If they sell photoshop as example for like $20 then they also earn more money because more people will buy it instead of selling it for $900
i just freaking got winzip 14.5, ace utilities, tune-up 2010, auslogics boostspeed, switch sound converter, glary utilities, counter strike source, half life 1 2 ep 1 and ep 2, portal, winutilities, and fucking 9000 other games and i rule. dont forget the pr0n and anime pr0n and music. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Yeh Piracy is bad... Right!!! Do you think its fair that if you buy a game, music cd, dvd movie for alot of money then come to find out it is complete garbage and you spent 20-60 bucks who is getting pirated here? Pirating actually helps artists etc. If they are really good people will buy their product even if they have already d/led it...
internet piracy isn't illegal, think of it this way, people say "its like stealing a car" no it isn't, if there selling it over internet, it doesn't cost them anything to create it.there not paying for Cd's and burning them, there uploading them for no cost, so really anything you download via internet is not illegal, unless you sell it. and why are music company's complaining? its making the artist famous and more people eventually will go to there concerts.
I think piracy is ok.Its only when your dumb and start making illegal copies and then selling that illegal copy for low prices and making somewhat of a business. THATS WHEN THEY CATCH YOU.Other than that if you just pirate cause you cant pay for it but your not going to go make a business illegally then yeah your good to go. The FBI doesn't catch people like that hell they dont even look for people with illegal business sometimes. But most of the time they will catch you and you get screwed over
Chris: You are under the assumption that the pirates would be paying for it normally. Them using the software for free is the same net loss for the devs as if they simply didnt buy it, but its actually a gain for the devs, since the pirates are exposing the dev's software to people who may actually have the money to pay for it.
@guitarmaster199 Actually, eventually be will be able to do that too. Have you seen those three dimensional printers? What will they do when you can print your own hardware? Ban the materials?
Companies are greedy, even with lot piracy they still make a huge profit.
What they want is clear profit, example without piracy maybe they should made profit 10 millions but with piracy they made it only 5 millions. Bloody greedy fuckers they are not even happy with 5 millions.
How about they donate some money to the poor people who doesnt even have a bread for breakfast? I know we ask too much, but they don't ask too much? I'll make sure burn every possible software.
NEVER BUY SOFTWARE..you'll just be funding software companies to lobby for new ridiculous laws that will take your freedom away. some of the comparisons are very flawed.. I wouldn't steal a car, but if i could make a copy of one for myself i would.
@dudabar2 Thats a great idea but think about it and put yourself in the other side! Lets say you make a new "2012 Ford Mustang" this invention took you about 5 yrs to complete and you are desperate for sm cash but you find out that others are making money with your idea for free! now i might sound like an ass to you but just think about it! But like i said GREAT idea!
@Jmpapi151 As technology and our ability to copy improves, so must business models adapt. Instead of whining about your great idea being copied, and trying to change laws to keep a once working but now failing business model in place, one will have to adapt. Also, maybe it's just me but i find people place way too much value on the idea. Truth is good ideas are dime a dozen, it's the implementation and how you get money out of it that really counts, if you don't have that don't whine.
@dudabar2 I was not whining about it! I was just saying! You can do what ever you want to do with your computer i don't give a dogs ass about what you do!
piracy will never disappear. you might be able to shutdown one person at a time, but by that time hundreds more pirate's will appear, nobody can control the internet.
Just a little food for thought here. The movie "the hangover" was apparently the top selling of 2009 and made millions of dollars. Which also happens to be the top pirated movie of 2009. Kinda funny how when people like something they buy it.
You can talk all you want. a person who pirates isn't "taking' or "depriving" anything from anyone.
If its on the net its public domain, and you are all going under the assumption that the person pirating would have bought the product in the first place.
I used to be a pirate, but then i saw my ways, this video changed me, i have no pirate software any more all my software is fully paided, and i feel better about it. I may be £165 more broke after buying windows 7, but I am confident i have a genuine version. I hope this video changed some of you.
I do make programs and it's free. I also have somebody copying my stuff without permission but I don't care that much however my concern is they are using it to brake people's computers and making it into torjan viruses.
so many people pirate its allmost inpossible not to accedentally i mean i accedentaly downloaded Window 7 and Burned it and installed it and patched it and cracked it... and im on it as we speak ... but its not about that once you have a taste of that wonderfull thing called FREE it makes you on a cruise to achieve everything you want FOR FREE! But its very rare to get caught :) So i recommend dont start i Quited formated my hardrive im chaning my IP Address after this etc.. And be a pure legal
So, are you saying that massive crime has no effect? That millions of people stealing from you and not paying does not have any effect? Of course profit is exceeded by costs if people steal the product. For the new film Robin Hood, workers spent a year constructing the sets. If one person buys the movie for a few bucks and distributes it to millions of people, do you actually think no damage is done?
Piracy is not sharing. It is anti-sharing. It costs tens of millions of dollars to create a new game. The reason we can buy games at a tiny fraction of the cost is that we share in the cost. We get to use something that costs tens of millions for a relatively tiny amount. That's sharing. Pirates refuse to share in the development costs of products. They leech off of workers and honest consumers. They seem to feel they were born entitled to the free labor of others.
i hate to tell you this but: that is not how it works. Businesses are in it to make a profit, that is to exceed the costs they invested in the project. If the fail to exceed or even the production costs then they made a bad business decision. It has very little or even anything to do with sharing
So, I guess car theft means cars are too expensive.
And if you want blank CDs, go buy them. What does that have to do with CDs that have content? That's like saying a blank canvas has the same value as the Mona Lisa.
As for radio, radio stations pay royalties when they play songs. It is completely different.
Pirating software or music or anything else for that matter is a very strong message of you are charging to much for mediocre product. thats why when you could buy blank CD's for 20 cents and yet commercial music CD's cost 20 bucks everyone was downloading from napster because no one wanted to pay 20 bucks for a couple of songs. when they started selling songs for a dollar piracy dropped. its wrong to download a song on a pc, but its ok to hear it on a radio for free? wtf?
I kinda of have to ask too, what is the difference between downloading a movie and taping it with your VCR/DVD/DVR? I didn't even know this was illegal, it turns out actually it is, but no one cares, if you were watching a movie you taped with a cop, he won't slap the cuffs on you, and cops even do it themselves without consequence.

Above all, open-source ftw.

In my opinion, software should be sold to larger corporations or businesses, because the normal everyday people pirating it are not going to make an impact on the company.
I also find it to be bullshit that a company wants to sell a product to regular citizens for 700 bucks (Adobe), when all that person may want to do with it is skin a web page.
All software should have a free version; not enough people know what they're doing with this technical thing. Really depends on what you use it for.

If you have the opportunity to get pirated software, DO IT, but donate some $ directly to us because the ones that actually made it. We have worked hard through school to be were why are. I think we deserve it. Besides the rich executives from MS already have tons of cash,it wont hurt them.

internet piracy isn't illegal, think of it this way, people say "its like stealing a car" no it isn't, if there selling it over internet, it doesn't cost them anything to create it.there not paying for Cd's and burning them, there uploading them for no cost, so really anything you download via internet is not illegal, unless you sell it. and why are music company's complaining? its making the artist famous and more people eventually will go to there concerts.
dylanhelmer 1 year ago
I think piracy is ok.Its only when your dumb and start making illegal copies and then selling that illegal copy for low prices and making somewhat of a business. THATS WHEN THEY CATCH YOU.Other than that if you just pirate cause you cant pay for it but your not going to go make a business illegally then yeah your good to go. The FBI doesn't catch people like that hell they dont even look for people with illegal business sometimes. But most of the time they will catch you and you get screwed over

Like Putting your software on the internet creates "Pirates"
If you don't want us to diseminate your software, KEEP IT OFF THE NETWORKS!
Sell it directly to the end user and Mail it to them with a unique serial number for tracking purposes.
Putting artwork, videos and music on a public network means you are GIVING IT AWAY!

Yeah, downloading hardware would be awesome.
Chris: You are under the assumption that the pirates would be paying for it normally. Them using the software for free is the same net loss for the devs as if they simply didnt buy it, but its actually a gain for the devs, since the pirates are exposing the dev's software to people who may actually have the money to pay for it.

Jmpapi151 1 year ago
@Jmpapi151 As technology and our ability to copy improves, so must business models adapt. Instead of whining about your great idea being copied, and trying to change laws to keep a once working but now failing business model in place, one will have to adapt. Also, maybe it's just me but i find people place way too much value on the idea. Truth is good ideas are dime a dozen, it's the implementation and how you get money out of it that really counts, if you don't have that don't whine.

Just a little food for thought here. The movie "the hangover" was apparently the top selling of 2009 and made millions of dollars. Which also happens to be the top pirated movie of 2009. Kinda funny how when people like something they buy it.

Piracy isn't stealing
It just isn't
You can talk all you want. a person who pirates isn't "taking' or "depriving" anything from anyone.
If its on the net its public domain, and you are all going under the assumption that the person pirating would have bought the product in the first place.

So, are you saying that massive crime has no effect? That millions of people stealing from you and not paying does not have any effect? Of course profit is exceeded by costs if people steal the product. For the new film Robin Hood, workers spent a year constructing the sets. If one person buys the movie for a few bucks and distributes it to millions of people, do you actually think no damage is done?
markxq 2 years ago
Piracy is not sharing. It is anti-sharing. It costs tens of millions of dollars to create a new game. The reason we can buy games at a tiny fraction of the cost is that we share in the cost. We get to use something that costs tens of millions for a relatively tiny amount. That's sharing. Pirates refuse to share in the development costs of products. They leech off of workers and honest consumers. They seem to feel they were born entitled to the free labor of others.
markxq 2 years ago
i hate to tell you this but: that is not how it works. Businesses are in it to make a profit, that is to exceed the costs they invested in the project. If the fail to exceed or even the production costs then they made a bad business decision. It has very little or even anything to do with sharing
Insomnium2188 2 years ago

markxq 2 years ago

So, I guess car theft means cars are too expensive.
And if you want blank CDs, go buy them. What does that have to do with CDs that have content? That's like saying a blank canvas has the same value as the Mona Lisa.
As for radio, radio stations pay royalties when they play songs. It is completely different.
And CDs don't cost $20.
markxq 2 years ago
Pirating software or music or anything else for that matter is a very strong message of you are charging to much for mediocre product. thats why when you could buy blank CD's for 20 cents and yet commercial music CD's cost 20 bucks everyone was downloading from napster because no one wanted to pay 20 bucks for a couple of songs. when they started selling songs for a dollar piracy dropped. its wrong to download a song on a pc, but its ok to hear it on a radio for free? wtf?
