the soul is there, no question about it.. so many people confuse sloppy attacks and lack of technique as "soul" but it ain't so.. that Carl has done his woodshedding homework and developed marvelous technique and chops in both lead and jazz does not mean he plays with no "soul" and the fact that he can do it all does not disqualify him as a "jazzer" or what have you.. he has always moved me whenever i have seen him.. saw him tear up "anthropology" with supersax years ago, totally killed me..
@ARKfusion - You said it perfectly. I assume that those that talk nonsense about a genius like Carl Saunders, are just either deaf or ignorant...or even worst, envious.
Of course, very few people can appreciate the complex harmonic passages...how about the majority of people? While we write this silly stuff, Carl plays..better every day.
I do not believe you all really understand what level Carl is really on. Say what you will about "soul" and other qualities that are personal to each individual listener, but I hear this guy play, you all seem to just notice sounds coming out of a trumpet. Do you have any idea how complex these harmonic passages are that he just so happens to be playing at lightning speed? I suspect not. Carl's demeanor when playing is almost that of effortlessness. He is a genius in his craft.
It is the people of pure emotion, the ones that seek only "soul," that make it a hospitable world for such a genius. You could liken him to a math genius if you want. To me, this man has an amazing talent and is one of the most underrated musicians I've seen yet.
Some comments here question taste and soul. I guess it depends what you are looking for in the music. Standing up and demonstrating your technique is a statement about who you are and to a certain extent what you (as performer) expect from an audience. I don't dig it. I look for soul / feeling. But respect is due for his undoubted technical prowess and many people worship that
Alokinnina, you are so pathetic you could only be female. To compare the work of Baker with this genius makes me feel so sorry for the Jerks that the great country of th USA produces. I'm a Brit. But to me the finest music ever produced is American jazz.
@JAZZOLOGIST1 Hey Jazzologist1, Brits are nice people, so why are you behaving like a hysterical male chauvinist pig?..or..perhaps you are not sure about your sexuality?...so, take two penises and call me in the morning. BTW Carl and Chet are both great, they have a fabulous harmonic sense and although they are different, they are well respected by jazz fan with a musical ear..which is not your case......
what the............. great soul.... i am so moved. great techniques, mistakes are common to musicians and no one is exempted. he's a great player. i miss my father instantly with this song.
Quite simply this man saunders is the finest trumpeter around. I've followed James, Maynard, Miles etc etc, and nobody, but nobody is quite his equal. He has everything in spades, sideways and way over the top.
SkaterChild333, your observation is right. On the other hand, there are thousands of trumpet players play with arched fingers and can't play as Carl does..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This trumpet player has a swinging problem. He should try listening to the masters and imitate their style and swinging concept. He should do some woodshedding on basic fundementals such as long tones and clark exercises in order to play without sounding so labored and forced
He plays lead for Bill Holman and toured with Maynard and others. I know that doesn't mean because of that someone can swing. It does however mean he's got credibility, something you lack. Now.... if you were talking about Patrick Hession I could get on board with your comments.
Glockyia, I dont know what you are doing posting ignorant comments like this? At first, I thought these comments are too stupid to even resond to but then I said, stupid people need to be responded too.
Carl Saunders is one of the most incredible, versitle trumpet players alive. On this particular tune, he is playing JAZZ TRUMPET...he WANTS his sound to sound this way.. breathy at times, full at times, when he plays lead or in the upper register, he will adjust his sound accordingly..
I agree with jefft022. I've listened a lot to Saunders and think he is one of the best and most versatile jazz trumpeters in the market now. He is a true west coast disciple but with a modern touch. I think he hast listened a lot to Don Fagerquist and for sure has some of the same melodic way of playing choruses
We all have our favorites, but Carl Saunders can play the trumpet. Sometimes you need a hammer and sometimes you need dental floss. Both are excellent tools, but quite different. Chet Baker rules on ballads, but would not do well playing lead. Saunders may be a bit much for some, but wow what a player.
I will say it again. Anyone who saw Carl Saunders live and wasnt impressed is a moron. This guy is truly one of the greatest jazz trumpeters ever. Not only that, one of the best lead players on the scene today.
Anyone who says they are not impressed with Carl Saunders are too f-ing stupid to be allowed to post anything. Carl Saunders is one of the greatest jazz trumpeters on the scene today. He is what we call a MOTHER FUCKER!
What an idiotic comment! Your musical ear is mediocre to say the least. You may want to try listen to Country and Western music, so your low musical IQ will fell fulfilled!
In other words you jazzfreak251 admit that you can not play that well, but oh do impress us with the youtube links to your trumpet playing, oh you have none, right?
jazzfreak251, one more thing, what you said was spoken like a true 17 year old that you are, if you could even hit half of the chord changes Carl did you would then perhaps be worthy of polishing his horns
My playing has nothing to do with my opinion. Most critics of music are not musicians but they can still understand the art. And this is not art, its showin' off.
why does music always have to be so meaningful? Can't it just be entertaining and awesome? Remember that there's meaning in showmanship as well. And all great composers/musicians since the renaissance have been great entertainers.
Chet Baker off drugs was a good trumpet player, smooth, lyrical....not one of the best, but good with Mulligan. Strung out, less than average. Unfortunately he spent most of his time involved in the latter.
A tune doesn't have to be one way or another. If you were a musician, you will understand this. I listen to Chet Baker too and I like his play, Carl's, and Clifford, and Miles, and Tom Harrell and Dizzy and other. They are all different.
Actually, on this planet this is a very typical big band arrangement, and he plays great on it. In a small combo, like what Chet typically played in, he may play differently. Anyhow, you're full of crap. There is no such thing as the "best" in subjective issues like this, except to individuals and their tastes, and most people who know anything about music understand this. I love Chet's playing, but he's only the "best" at what he did.
