  • the soul is there, no question about it.. so many people confuse sloppy attacks and lack of technique as "soul" but it ain't so.. that Carl has done his woodshedding homework and developed marvelous technique and chops in both lead and jazz does not mean he plays with no "soul" and the fact that he can do it all does not disqualify him as a "jazzer" or what have you.. he has always moved me whenever i have seen him.. saw him tear up "anthropology" with supersax years ago, totally killed me..

  • carl is one amazing musician! used to listen to his stuff back in the late 90s till my dad stole my cd. ha ha.

I totally forgot about him till now and glad i found this video. thank you for uploading this!

i don't know about other people but i got chills watching this video. he's the man! I have no idea why he's not relatively unknown.

  • @ARKfusion - You said it perfectly. I assume that those that talk nonsense about a genius like Carl Saunders, are just either deaf or ignorant...or even worst, envious.

Of course, very few people can appreciate the complex harmonic passages...how about the majority of people? While we write this silly stuff, Carl plays..better every day.

  • I do not believe you all really understand what level Carl is really on. Say what you will about "soul" and other qualities that are personal to each individual listener, but I hear this guy play, you all seem to just notice sounds coming out of a trumpet. Do you have any idea how complex these harmonic passages are that he just so happens to be playing at lightning speed? I suspect not. Carl's demeanor when playing is almost that of effortlessness. He is a genius in his craft.

  • It is the people of pure emotion, the ones that seek only "soul," that make it a hospitable world for such a genius. You could liken him to a math genius if you want. To me, this man has an amazing talent and is one of the most underrated musicians I've seen yet.

  • Some comments here question taste and soul. I guess it depends what you are looking for in the music. Standing up and demonstrating your technique is a statement about who you are and to a certain extent what you (as performer) expect from an audience. I don't dig it. I look for soul / feeling. But respect is due for his undoubted technical prowess and many people worship that

  • Alokinnina, you are so pathetic you could only be female. To compare the work of Baker with this genius makes me feel so sorry for the Jerks that the great country of th USA produces. I'm a Brit. But to me the finest music ever produced is American jazz.

  • @JAZZOLOGIST1 Hey Jazzologist1, Brits are nice people, so why are you behaving like a hysterical male chauvinist pig?..or..perhaps you are not sure about your sexuality?...so, take two penises and call me in the morning. BTW Carl and Chet are both great, they have a fabulous harmonic sense and although they are different, they are well respected by jazz fan with a musical ear..which is not your case......

  • what the............. great soul.... i am so moved. great techniques, mistakes are common to musicians and no one is exempted. he's a great player. i miss my father instantly with this song.

  • The intro was a little tasteless, but the rest is very honorable!

  • WOW!! What a monster player! A Master.

  • Quite simply this man saunders is the finest trumpeter around. I've followed James, Maynard, Miles etc etc, and nobody, but nobody is quite his equal. He has everything in spades, sideways and way over the top.

  • im a lead trumpet player in one of the jazz bands at my high school and i have never heard a jazz trumpet player so smooth before :)

  • i know i'm no where near as good as this guy, but he has his fingers flat when he plays, and ur not suppost to. you're suppost to have them arched.

  • SkaterChild333, your observation is right. On the other hand, there are thousands of trumpet players play with arched fingers and can't play as Carl does..

So...perhaps it's time to try flat fingers :-)

  • @SkaterChild333 when you're getting payed to play, you can do whatever you want. It's past the point of fundamentals

  • @SkaterChild333

who cares about the technique. how does it sound?

  • the5 cullens

    WHAT?

OK let's SWING MY FOOLISH HEART!

    RIGHT!

  • the5cullens: I think you have a swinging problem..I mean, as a person...or you don't know sh*t about jazz..

  • detectosoretes, Right on man. This guy obviously was abused as a kid or doesnt have a set of ears. Carl Saunders is legendary.

  • You are an Idiot. You should not even be allowed to see this!

  • do you kno anything about jazz? or trumpet? this guy is like a god

  • He plays lead for Bill Holman and toured with Maynard and others. I know that doesn't mean because of that someone can swing. It does however mean he's got credibility, something you lack. Now.... if you were talking about Patrick Hession I could get on board with your comments.

  • This is a reply to The5cullens

  • @the5cullens what?!?! ahahahaha sorry to dig up buried comments, but that's one of the dumbest things ive ever heard.

  • omg i love this guy!!! Love dance is his best tho..

  • Love dance is unbelievable. The control, ideas, phrasing, is 1st class.

  • Oh man i kno! His tone in the upper register is amazingly smoother. And the ideas are out of this world!

  • this man is amazing, a true legend in the trumpet world....he's so musical with all his phrasing

  • Don't knock it for what it's not.. He's great at this.

  • The trumpet player sounds like he needs to put more air through the horn. His sound is average at best and his swinging style is very corny.

  • Glockyia, I dont know what you are doing posting ignorant comments like this? At first, I thought these comments are too stupid to even resond to but then I said, stupid people need to be responded too.

Carl Saunders is one of the most incredible, versitle trumpet players alive. On this particular tune, he is playing JAZZ TRUMPET...he WANTS his sound to sound this way.. breathy at times, full at times, when he plays lead or in the upper register, he will adjust his sound accordingly..

  • whumbyrd : thanks for defending "the cause"

Interestingly enough, there are over 10,500 views...so people enjoys the video and Carl's playing. Stupidity and envy are part of this jungle,

but those of us with some ears..appreciate Carl's

    inspiration and virtuosism.

  • Not always.

  • Spelling???

  • I agree with jefft022. I've listened a lot to Saunders and think he is one of the best and most versatile jazz trumpeters in the market now. He is a true west coast disciple but with a modern touch. I think he hast listened a lot to Don Fagerquist and for sure has some of the same melodic way of playing choruses

  • We all have our favorites, but Carl Saunders can play the trumpet. Sometimes you need a hammer and sometimes you need dental floss. Both are excellent tools, but quite different. Chet Baker rules on ballads, but would not do well playing lead. Saunders may be a bit much for some, but wow what a player.

  • mmmm......high notes!!!...mmm.....a liked until the ego explotion

  • if you think this is good, check out phil driscoll, he'll make you cream...LOL!

  • dwardtrumpet: Phil Driscoll is to trumpet what Liberacce was to piano...corny and kitsch.

  • recently saw him play at rcc hes AMAZING best trumpet jazz player ive seen in person BY FAR

  • This guy is a little better than average in my opinion.Chet Baker rules.

  • Technique out the ass, chops to spare, musicality, flexibility and dexterity. What more could you ask for in a trumpet player?

  • soul?

  • I will say it again. Anyone who saw Carl Saunders live and wasnt impressed is a moron. This guy is truly one of the greatest jazz trumpeters ever. Not only that, one of the best lead players on the scene today.

  • cool......

  • Anyone who says they are not impressed with Carl Saunders are too f-ing stupid to be allowed to post anything. Carl Saunders is one of the greatest jazz trumpeters on the scene today. He is what we call a MOTHER FUCKER!

  • Great technique but I feel as if he is just trying to impress rather than play meaningfull.

  • What an idiotic comment! Your musical ear is mediocre to say the least. You may want to try listen to Country and Western music, so your low musical IQ will fell fulfilled!

  • So I guess your saying that chet baker and miles suck because they cant play high and fast. Listen to Kind of Blue

  • i agree with you. i saw him live in 04 and was less then impressed.

  • In other words you jazzfreak251 admit that you can not play that well, but oh do impress us with the youtube links to your trumpet playing, oh you have none, right?

  • jazzfreak251, one more thing, what you said was spoken like a true 17 year old that you are, if you could even hit half of the chord changes Carl did you would then perhaps be worthy of polishing his horns

  • My playing has nothing to do with my opinion. Most critics of music are not musicians but they can still understand the art. And this is not art, its showin' off.

  • "Those who can't, criticize" - Dr. MIKEY Schmidt

  • i agree with you

  • well let me specify...i dont think hes showing off (mind you i'm not a fan of his playing) but as far as critics go, i agree

  • why does music always have to be so meaningful? Can't it just be entertaining and awesome? Remember that there's meaning in showmanship as well. And all great composers/musicians since the renaissance have been great entertainers.

  • Freaking awesome.

  • Absolutely wonderful; enjoyed every single note. . . . . jenny6664

  • WOW. The VAX big Band and Carl together.5 stars.

    THanks.

George Karpinsky from Canada where Maynard came from.

  • Chet Baker off drugs was a good trumpet player, smooth, lyrical....not one of the best, but good with Mulligan. Strung out, less than average. Unfortunately he spent most of his time involved in the latter.

  • WOW! Amazing. So many chord progressions and scales.

  • i have never heard of him before...but after hearing him play, he definately ranks with the big boys....he is amazing..

  • This tune should be EMOTIONAL, not technics, presentations.Very STRANGE !!!!1

Listen MR. CHET BAKER, on this !

  • A tune doesn't have to be one way or another. If you were a musician, you will understand this. I listen to Chet Baker too and I like his play, Carl's, and Clifford, and Miles, and Tom Harrell and Dizzy and other. They are all different.

  • Shure, but , you always have to know, who is THE BEST- MR. Chet Baker. THE END !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ok, but make sure you discuss this with your doctor in the next session. :-)

  • sure with you , in a group!!

  • Actually, on this planet this is a very typical big band arrangement, and he plays great on it. In a small combo, like what Chet typically played in, he may play differently. Anyhow, you're full of crap. There is no such thing as the "best" in subjective issues like this, except to individuals and their tastes, and most people who know anything about music understand this. I love Chet's playing, but he's only the "best" at what he did.

  • PLEASE VISIT SOME MUSIC CD SHOP. YOU WILL BE AMAZING WITH THE QUANTITY OF CHET`S CD`S, VS some carle sonders. Do you realy aware, what are you talking ABOUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There's probably tons more chet baker cd's than booker little.. what's your idiotic point?

  • probably that you should be hospitalizsd.

  • My Gosh, never heard him before, but he is absolutely unbelievable. I could listen to that over and over.

    jenny6664

  • Underappreciated trumpet players: Carl Saunders, John Swana, John Eckert, Andy Gravish, Jon Sneider, Victor Paz, Barry Ries. Overappreciated: numerous...

  • Carl is the the greatest!

  • i attended a clinic by him, all he did was talk about how he never practiced when he grew up. but he is defenetly a great player.

  • WOW what a monster!

  • Carl Saunders is simply one of the best of all time. See him live and you just won't believe it! Five Stars!

  • saw him live with supersax in a club in north hollywood several years ago and he tore up "anthropology" like you wouldnt believe, absolutely incredible, no aspect of trumpet escapes him

  • Carl Saunders is so great. My Sax teacher gave this song to about 3 months ago. by now, my improv of that song sounds just a WEE bit lesser than Karl.

  • VERY GOOD!!!! YES LOVE IT
