JP never used anything close to full gain at preamp level. That's why alot of Zep's live stuff sounds thin and weak. Especially when soloing. More gain = less tone, and the combinations of different guitar tones within and between songs were part of their trademark sound---not that it came across well when live.
You are right about the gain theory. And there is so much fucking noise in No Quarter. If the tone on you stereo is anything over -2 or -3, you can hear all that fucking noise.
What the fuck is ish? The reason it sucked is cause it isn't recorded well. There are some soundboard recordings from '75 that sound a whole lot better than the Earl's Court soundboards and you can hear that the band still sounds awesome.

his amps were worn out dude. the tubes were old. yeah his early 70s tones on the marshall 1959s were amazing. perfect crunch. i really like the tone on how the west was won 1972. in '73 he used this treble booster which i didnt care for too much, but the tone was still good. you can hear it in The song remains the same 1973 movie
theyre KT66s. back then, thats what marshall put in their amps. later, due to being short on stock, they were replaced by el-34s in later marshalls. also, Page modded them early on when he first got them to 200w as opposed to the normal 100w.
I think it just moved with the music, all of his tones live and studio became a bit more "prog" ish. plus, he didnt use a tb, he cocks the wah to the full forward position, mainly seen on the communication breakdown and WLL solos
i agree with the more "prog" ish. yeah he did do that, but even in earlier recordings, if you really listen to black dog and no quarter, the main guitar is more of this out of phase weak-ish fuzz thats really interesting where normal guitarists would just crank up an amp for basic overdrive or crunch, which is what he did live. which gave his playing so much more depth.

no...JImmy is an icon! He's mysterious. He's a complete inovator of the instrument, a once-in-a-generation songwriter, and we love him. But he is not a perfectionist. Listen carefully to the solo, there are multiple dead notes..there's a better version (of the solo) in the Jimmy Page and the Black Crows version on youtube. No disrespect intended, I trust that I have demonstrated my LZ enthusiasm that we share.

JP never used anything close to full gain at preamp level. That's why alot of Zep's live stuff sounds thin and weak. Especially when soloing. More gain = less tone, and the combinations of different guitar tones within and between songs were part of their trademark sound---not that it came across well when live.

What the fuck is ish? The reason it sucked is cause it isn't recorded well. There are some soundboard recordings from '75 that sound a whole lot better than the Earl's Court soundboards and you can hear that the band still sounds awesome.

his amps were worn out dude. the tubes were old. yeah his early 70s tones on the marshall 1959s were amazing. perfect crunch. i really like the tone on how the west was won 1972. in '73 he used this treble booster which i didnt care for too much, but the tone was still good. you can hear it in The song remains the same 1973 movie

theyre KT66s. back then, thats what marshall put in their amps. later, due to being short on stock, they were replaced by el-34s in later marshalls. also, Page modded them early on when he first got them to 200w as opposed to the normal 100w.

I think it just moved with the music, all of his tones live and studio became a bit more "prog" ish. plus, he didnt use a tb, he cocks the wah to the full forward position, mainly seen on the communication breakdown and WLL solos

i agree with the more "prog" ish. yeah he did do that, but even in earlier recordings, if you really listen to black dog and no quarter, the main guitar is more of this out of phase weak-ish fuzz thats really interesting where normal guitarists would just crank up an amp for basic overdrive or crunch, which is what he did live. which gave his playing so much more depth.
