This is 1 ugly long-haired rotten-teeth old-looking hippie bastard but he seems to know how to build a layout. So keep up the good work but put on a mask next time so we don't get ill looking at you, dude.
My dad used to bring me to model train shows. He constructed the table when he was younger, and since then we have run out of room in our house. (It's considerably bigger than the one in the video.) Hopefully someday when I find a place on my own I can put it and build a layout, and hopefully YouTube will still be around then. I'll probably refer back to this video.
that benchwork is gonna be loud. the plastic roadbed attached directly to the foam is asking for extra noise. vibration absorbing roadbed like woodland scenics. floor silencing foam available at good hardware stores, it works bitchin. foam sheets from craft stores, too. best quieting substrate is a thick layer of RTV silicone. prep with care- the ammonia can eat foam.
Great video, but when it's all done it is going to be the most boring layout ever. It's just a loop of track with a passing track and a spur. You lose interest real fast. I know because that's what happened to me.
@816hondarider I seen a article in "Modelrailroader" magazine they made a 4'x8' for $500. One thing you can do to save money make things like building out of trash (building/details/benchwork). Use meal dirt/sand/stone for scenery. Use toy cars like hotwheels for car (a little out of scale but they work) they are more cheap. I know many other ways I can PM you and tell you more.
That is a cool layout, bought a Life-Like Super City Elevated Rails train set and I have tried to make my 8x4 train table layout interesting by making a 4 tunnel mountain on one side of the table. You can see what I have done so far after a year on my video titled 8x4 Ho Scale Train Layout.
Absolutely first class - If anybody is still too scared to make a start for themselves after watching this set of videos then they are interested in the wrong hobby. I know that the only thing which will limit my efforts from now on will be finances.
Today most people buy computer games such as RailWorks 2 and build their railway of derams. This is the real deal, I hope to do something like this in the future. :)
i love these videos but one question where u said to use plaster could u use plaster cloth dont get me wrong i love this video u did a good job on the layout
cool i love this layout that has a model train in it and im going to start building it when im 14 and it will be easy to build when im grown up but for now im just 8 years old so im seeing videos how to build model train layouts to know how to build one when im grown up.
When shaping the foam I noticed quite a bit got into the tracks etc. and is quite difficult to get out which you didnt show. Wouldnt it be better to cover the tracks beforehand as you did in the following step? Just a thought.
@jacobfain9... I got my foam from Lowe's... it should be back by roofing and insulation type stuff. I'm sure that you can find it at any similar store.

how would i go about making a scrapyard scene. kind of like orange rust everywere and very black worn down engines with dirty warehouses. what kind of powder would i use for rust.
I love these kinds of videos. Really gives me good ideas and directions on ways to build. Really a lot better than finished layouts and "Heres what I did".
One can get usually obtain the Dow blue, extruded polystrene foam from wholesale and retail stores that also supply lumber. I saw a large selection of Dow extruded foam at a Home Depot Store.
If your timing is right you could get some of the blue foam left-over from building or rebuilding structures in your area.
Interesting video. Thumbs up! :)

Where do you get the foam? The only one I have found has aluminum covering on both sides. I haven't seen this blue one anywhere.

Do you have to have foam board down to make the scenery. Like painting and etc? or can you do to straight on the wood?
