these guys are VICIOUS lil buggers, i dub them the dicks of the sea, cuz as far as predatos go those lil ahmmers of theirs pack a HELL of a whallop, shoot these lil guys can bust open clams usually with one good solid hit
@necroimages that's obviously a peacock.. look at the colouration! It's got the classic 'leopard' spots, normal peacock colours and......it doesn't have any meral spots either, which are a huge feature of the smithii..! What even made you think it was a g. smithii?!
Aww, he has his dactyl cut off! I hope he found a caring owner and was able to grow his arms back. It'd be horrible for him to have to spend his life in there. :(
It's one of the cooles animals I know, among slime molds and those crabs (pistol shrimp I think) wich can snap their pincers to create a cavitation that on implosion, stunns it's enemy/prey. The water is heated by that to 5000 °C in a very small point. Those are even crazier than the mantis shrimp, but they are not so beautiful haha.
The eyes of the mantis shrimp are very great too, as already said by some people here.
That thing is fucking huge!!!! But its quite pretty....til it knocks you out. I had a friend who was dumb enough to put his face on the glass of an aquarium and the little monster punched him. Dented the glass and he was on the ground with a bruise on his face.
@kriskater yup, eyes - very sophisticated compound eyes with hyperspectral vision, I believe. I imagine he sees things like predator, albeit without the targetting system.
My parents were from Taiwan, and I used to go there in the summers. Unfortunately they don't treat animals well at all, and there is little anyone can do. I would beg my mom to let me buy the puppies and bunnies being drugged and sold on the street but where was I going to smuggle 30 animals back to the US? It's just a lack of education and a culture that looks at them differently. I always just pray they suffer as little as possible. Like this poor guy with his arms removed.
These things are awesome looking. Their colors are so interesting, as are they. Ferocious when it comes to their prey. But I agree that it should not be being kept in there! I hate to see a creature of ANY kind being kept in an enclosure too small to roam around enough freely. And it's horrible that they removed part of its body so that they could keep it in their weak little box. Though their punch is very strong, they don't often crack tank glass. Not often. They use that strength for food.
Actually, there's different kinds of claws idffeent Mantis' have.
Bashers, and Stabbers. The basher's will not only break your fingers, they'll shatter the bones in them... the stabbers could quite easily take off your fingers.
You saw this in an AQUARIUM? You mean to say an aquarium that opens displays to public visitors, or an aquarium store? If it was the former, then you really should complain, because these animals should not be kept in such small enclosures, exposed to strong lighting.
While peacock mantids do live on reefs with strong lighting, they construct burrows in the wild from which to get away from it. Without this burrow, constant exposure to sunlight stresses the animal and encourages shell rot.
The animal in the video is not for sale. It is on display in an aquarium, as the owner of this video has stated. Assuming this animal is permanently in the care of the aquarium, it should not be kept in this manner.
my new favourite youtuve video! it is sooo clear and really shows the beauty of these guys really well! thank you for uploading!
