Nuno would play circles aroung Vai. Nuno just plugs in to his few little effect he has then his own amp and thats it. Vais got harmonizers and shit. I would like to hear Vai without all the effects.
@brib333 wow. For real? Vai plays all the time without any specific effects. Have you really listened to the man? For the Love of God? Tender Surrender? All you hear is a little wah on those and that's it. How is that any different than what you said about Nuno, plugging into a few effects? You can have all the gear in the world. If you can't play it translates into shit. I love Nuno, but to say he'd play circles around the great Steve Vai is just plain silly.
@bandit7498 But Nuno does and so does Joe Bonamassa..Vai is done. Dull modal shit that really has no soul. I loved Vai but he has been surpassed now..admit it
@noahwayne Admit what, that both guys are great players? OK. And I'll also admit that I'm not some idiot that looks at musicians as athletes as if they're in some sort of lame ass competition. If you like Nuno better, so be it. But don't try and dictate to me who is better because that's largely a matter of opinion. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years. Last thing i need is some joker telling me someone else is better as if it's fact. That's just stupid.
@brib333 Vai has fantastic feel also..... sure some effects on his stuff..... however he is just as free flowing as Nuno . Vai is a master. Vai and Nuno are 2 of my top favorite guitarists including Paul Gilbert.
Nuno is def. underrated as a guitar player. Not overly complicated like Satriani, not too simple like Cobain, and not as redundant as Angus Young; he´s more like Tommy Iommi with a bit more classical side to him than blues. I always like trying to learn his songs because he throws in new shit all the time and it keeps things fun and funky!

Hey man thanks for letting me attach my video as a response! It's a cover version where I play all the guitar (on top of a drum/bass backing track I found on the web), and I invited a couple of singers to help. Anyway, I remember when Extreme first start gaining popularity around 1989 - they really stood out because of their great songwriting, and of course Nuno was amazing... his rhythm guitar playing was just as interesting as the solos. I'll shut up now. Rock on!
Nuno has it all, speed, technique, phrasing, impeccable rthym, but most of all he has taste. He always seems to pick what the song needs rather than showing off. Truly one of the best of his generation.
@julieannlevine This clip doesnt do the song justice. I still listen to 3 sides and the music on that cd was released in the early 90s? I will say the problem with Van Halen's effort with Gary was not GARY but in the songs choosen and the time frame given. Glad to see them back. NUNO is great! Like their backing vocals.
yeah... i always look at him and he dresses like a cool native american indian warrior... i thought he really was indian... then i found out he was portuguese.. still a cool looking dude, and a great guitarist!!!
Extreme <3 I wonder why I didn't know before... They are amazing! Seems everybody loves Nuno, even the camera, lol... And so do I. In love with the way he plays...
One of the best guitar solos ever laid down on a song. Nuno, along with Vito Bratta, are my favorite guitarists of all time. Great chord phrasings, chunky rhythms, and solos that meant more than running some meaningless scales up and down a freatboard faster than what the next guy could. Glad to see Extreme back playing again.
I was always into the classic 70's/80's bands or rawer and more extreme (no pun intended!) metal stuff, but Extreme and Mr Big I loved, especailly Extreme, because they had feeling and great songwriting, and as you said, it wasnt just meaningless fast shredding, they are killer musicians who can knock you on your ass with something fast or flashy when they want to, but never at the expense of soul or songwriting like pioneers like early Van Halen, Queen, UFO etc.
You are right on the money. I always thought He-Man Woman Hater was the best example of the enormous amounts of talent that Extreme had. Rest In Peace and Decadence Dance are also right up there at the top as well.
I agree 100% do you like Saudades the new cd? I love that cd. Every song on that cd is AMAZING. King Of The Ladies is great and I wish they would have played it when i saw them.
make love not war... this band is amazing. really amazing. end the bomb. john said give peace a chance... our hearts are in the right place... don' t tread on me... make love not war... don't say these words lightly... shread...and a little hendrix to boot... rest in peace... love god... love your neighbor... love your enemies... peace.
Nuno is a BEAST!!!!!! So under rated. The man is nasty! Did hear the transistion into Voodoo Child at 4:12 ? That sh_t was sick!! Hats off to Nuno....
Wow forgot how good Nuno is, Its his funk that separates him from the junk, shredders take note, you have to find songs to showcsae your stuff or it dont mean shit! amen.
What a lot of players do is sign the endorsement for the money and place those amps on stage for show, while their real amps are behind that or backstage or something.
Dont know what Nuno does, or if he endorses any amps.
They have just released a new albun last year and it totally rocks its the best album I have heard in years check it out it`s called Saudades de rock and it has all the kick ass guitar you will ever need . Also they have toured it all over the world all last year and this was for Namm it`s always small it`s just a showcase for bands and Musical instruments .
I have always loved Extreme. Gary's voice, Nuno's guitar playing along with the other two musicians, don't remember their names, always sound great. They are great songwriters and musicians.
@pakerska He's always been awesome, besides the cd he put out with his solo shit. That was horrible. He looked like a girl on the cover with lipstick and eye liner and shit. Awesome guitarist though
@pakerska that's true to a point, he could be considered under rated as far as the general public goes but he's pretty respected in the guitar circle, and rightly so
WOW - can't beleive how great these guys still are. I saw them about 5 times in the 90's on tours in UK. Going to see them again in a couple of weeks in London - can't wait. They still rock and they are still damn sexy!
If I remember right...he used to use the floyd rose, but didn't like it anymore and put a piece of wood under it to disable it and just plays as if he had a set bridge. He describes that guitar somewhere on youtube when talking about Washburn's remakes of it.
