You can easily manage wake turbulence. Either land past the touchdown point of a plane ahead of you, or takeoff before the liftoff point. And wake turbulence tends to sink.
My best "hold up" was 2 regional jets in KABE. I was lending with my instructor in Piper Warrior, while 2 CRJs were waiting.
I've heard of small planes like a Cessna 172 landing on large airports several times. My former flight instructor has landed a small plane at JFK before.

Many large commercial airports I see on Google Maps has at least one tiny runway designed for those small planes; which is a good thing since they won't risk wake turbulence from those large jets. Btw, imagine if there were opposite problems, where a 747 tries to land at a small airport with short runway; it can't take off at all!
