  • ... if wagner himself accepted his works being sung in italian or french, who am i to whine about it? tebaldi is in glorious shape here and it is such a privilege to hear a soprano who does his music justice... brava, bravissima indeed! and thank you so much Orfeus80 for yet another great video.

  • Why does Tebaldi only sing in Italian? Surely she had the ability to sing this in German? I feel cheated.

  • @robertodiavolo You shouldn't. Wagner approved performances of his operas in other languages. Tebaldi has said she didn't feel she could be as expressive in other languages so she stuck to Italian. This, sadly, prevented her from singing Strauss (among other things) which would have been perfect for her in my opinion.

  • @Orfeus80 You're right - she would have been wonderful singing Strauss. An artist of this caliber should not have limited herself or "stuck just to Italian" though. If she really thought she couldn't be as expressive in other languages, I think she was selling herself short, big time.

  • I did not know this Tebaldi's performance, great !

    Thank you Orfeus80.

  • Wagner would have loved Tebaldi's performance here. She was great in this role & Elsa.

  • much better than I expected.

  • Do you have the italian lyrics sung by Tebaldi?

  • no, sorry.

  • Elisabetta: Salve, d'amor - recinto eletto!... Or lieta alfin - io riedo a te... A sciorre i carmi - il mio diletto A te ritorna, - ei torna a me!...
  • Is it not lovely to hear Wagner "sung" for once?

  • You should have heard Cesare Siepi as Gurnemanz in PARSIFAL. Wagner con bel canto! And unlike Tebaldi, he sang it auf Deutsch.

  • GREAT SINGER

  • An interesting choice for Tebaldi. And, a successful one. She sounds quite natural in this music. Great.

  • No less than Dr. Bohm said that Tebaldi was the finest Elisabeth he ever heard. In the early years of her career she also sang (in Italian) Eva in DIE MEISTERSINGER, Elsa in LOHENGRIN as well as Elisabeth in TANNHAUSER. It is a shame she gradually gave up her Wagner roles and never felt comfortable enough to perform them in German.

  • Thanks for the info. I had no idea she sang so many Wagner works.

  • Tebaldi's early career featured a much broader & varied repertoire than later when she basically narrowed down to Verdi, Puccini, Giordano, etc. In the early to mid-1950's she sang (in addition to Wagner) works of Handel, Rossini, early Verdi, Gounod, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Mascagni and Spontini (among others). She even sang 2 performances of the Bach ST. MATTHEW PASSION!

  • What a wonderfull performance. If only more Wagner was to be sung like this.

  • This is 1950.

She recorded this aria in stereo twenty years later, in 1969 and with the same voice, in glorious voice
