The chajras are sandwiched between whole bamboos on top of which the slates (or any other kind of roofing material) can rest. They provide a beautiful ceiling!
@field16: there's slate roofing on top. The split bamboos are only secondary support and a ceiling. No leakage issues at all!

they probably sealed the bottom of the bamboo with sheep metal or concrete or tarp somethiing like that

I'm confused by why he splits the bamboo so many times. Doesn't that make it easier for the rain to leak through the roof?
