There was another version that use to be on here that was longer. It was true to the original but with a mooted trumpet solo. I wish they wouldnt get rid of their listings.
I don't know if it's too obvious, but note that Minnie sings on this version too. This is the earliest version that I know of, from about 1968. It's on Cadet (Chicago). Minnie was in Rotary Connection at the time, who were on the subsidiary Cadet Concept. Many records on these labels have that unique orchestrated sound, as provided by Charles Stepney (producer, arranger). Ramsey probably sold the best but he produced a ton of great jazz/soul/misc LP's (Terry Callier, anyone?)
Actually the Minnie Riperton "version" is the original. It was written by her husband, Richard Rudolph, and released on the album Come To My Garden (GRT Records, 1970). Black Sheep sampled it for "Similak Child". All versions/samples are bumpin!
Anyone know which album this is off of? There's a song called Les Fleurs on Between the Keys, but it's not quite the same it's got too much bass, I want to find this version.
There is a jazzier version he did. Does anyone know the namme of the album or if it can be called up here?

Hers is not the original Ramsey lewis's is. Minnie did her own cover two years later. The Maiden Voyage album is the one that put him on the map

I like both of them. There is a little more Soul in the "Riperton" and a little more Jazz in the "Lewis".
