@mravantgarde123 At the time of the Black Plague (which is pretty prominent in this movie) there was a group of monks who believed that the plague was a punishment by God, and so they physically punished themselves routinely in an attempt to ward off the plague. That's why there are monks in this movie who hit themselves on the head with bibles and jump into water like here.
This is one of my favourite parts.
