This is especially haunting to me. "Distanced from one, blind to the other." I lost my dad when I was 5, and i'm living with the regret that I never really had a good relationship with my mother. When I was 18, she died too. This song just touches me, but i've yet to see the sweetness following this and i'm now 26.
I have always felt this song prepares me for the inevitable day I will have to bury my parents (unless I go before them). And all that will remain will be the sweet memories they left behind. They don't make music like this anymore, coldplay comes close to some of these deeper themes.
Having left my own family, this song does haunt, but I pulled away to live my life with joy and thunder rather than allow the past to pull me under. I am poorer materially, but the richness in spirit is something I will never abandon.
Sometimes you have to cut your losses and set out to make your own way. I did that back in 1984. I was poor in the material sense, but rich in the spiritual. Now, I'm old and have found I can go back home and find the love that I thought wasn't there when I was younger. We all grow older and change. I hope you can reconnect with your family. It's worth a try. If they cannot accept you, then continue on you path of life. Just remember, you're not alone.
Really forgot how great this record really is, been a while since i really listened to it. Just sick of songs like Drive and Everybody Hurts, over than that i love this record. This and the I.R.S. years are my favorites.
This song reminds me of the day my paternal Grandmother passed away. Emma Mitrisin. She was a hard woman and very mean to us at times, but I'll always love and remember her. May she rest in piece.
This song asks if you feel any pain from the loss of a family member; it recognizes that the family relationship is a stressed one, strained yet when lost painful and only then the sweetness of the memories past; follows.
@BeautyFromWithinXoXo I think he's saying that you should care about your parents and siblings, because life is too short and they are gone too soon anyway. And if you don't care, you'll end up living all alone.
...at least that's what I think he's trying to say...

Oner of the best songs from Automatic. This whole album has a haunting aura of sadnes, depression and thoughts about life and death..,,
This is the perfect song to listen to sitting alone in a bar with a whiskey..
