Please enlighten me: what, precisely, is the United States as it stands today doing for the rest of the world? Are the contributions it makes enough to balance the scales when considered in context with the lives and livelihoods it has destroyed, the freedoms it has discarded, and the natural, inherent, and unalienable rights it has so betrayed? At least in this manner we Vermonters could preserve the principles we love as well as the unique culture that is threatened by impending globalization.
The question is irrelevant and completely beside the point. It presumes that secession will enable the preservation of certain moral or democratic values. I've already stated why that would not work. The state would be even easier to control by outside forces. Vermont would soon become a U.S. colony. It does absolutely nothing to democratize the U.S. or prevent U.S. imperialism.
But that is precisely the point! The Second Vermont Republic believes that the United States has come to the point where it is no longer fixable - therefore, secession is a means to establish a government that we feel is fairer to our own needs. It does not mean we would completely cut ourselves off from the outside world - no state can function entirely without outside influence. Also, there are few resources here to make us a valuable asset or compel 'outside forces' to try to control Vermont.
Secession had never occurred to me. That is a very interesting proposition for any one being laid upon (and that group includes many people, I'm sure) by an ever growing group of multinational corporations.
I wonder if the birthplace of the USA would be interested in seceding :P
